EDMOND — The Public Works Department of the City of Edmond soon utilized nearly all of its space in 2006 when the department relocated to the Cross Timbers Public Works, said Herb Blomquist, Public Works director.

Wednesday, the department’s needs call for a $3.5 million expansion and facility renovation, Blomquist said at recent city council workshop open to the public.

“We’ve added Citylink, which if you look at the buses, especially the one we call Godzilla, that takes up a whole double stall underneath one of parking sheds,” Blomquist said.

A minimum of six new parking sheds are needed to accommodate the department’s needs, he said. Dozens of vehicles are parked outside where they are exposed to potential storm damage, Blomquist said. Ice has been a challenge, he said.

Vehicles need to be plugged into an electrical source so that on winter days they can be plugged in to start them for ready-to-go service, Blomquist said.

The city’s insurance no longer covers this potential damage. City vehicles are only partially protected by hail damage when placed front-first in the sheds, Blomquist said.

Additional space to construct more sheds could be placed behind the vehicle maintenance facility. There is also an uncovered area where Edmond Electric also stores some of its equipment, Blomquist said.

“Our near-term plan…between Edmond Electric and Public Works is to add 10 bay storage sheds back in our training area,” Blomquist said.

The dollar amount for the storage facility is $203,750. It is scheduled to be on the Edmond City Council’s agenda Tuesday, May 27.

Another facet of the long-term plan deals with a green initiative to increase the city’s fuel capabilities, Blomquist said. A propane tank has already been added with additional electrical supplies for two hybrid electric vehicles operated by the city.
