My God, that’s an ugly store.

Cool skyline though :)

Function over form.

Yeah, it's not an Apple store. It's there to sell stuff, not "look cool".

I am surprised the handicap spots aren't the closest spots to the front door or that they aren't spread out across a couple of rows in the front.

Predicting it now, they'll repaint by June, assuming they don't recognize/rectify the mistake before opening.

Doubt it.... It's not an exact duplicate of the Moore parking lot but similar distances.

This layout actually puts the accessible spaces nearer the exit than the Moore location does. So it's a trade off between easier access or egress and personally if I were handicapped I would prefer the easier egress to access.

As a handicapped individual, I want closer access to the entrance/exit. When it's very hot or very cold, getting from the car to the store is important. When I'm leaving, I'm in a warm/cool car, comfortable, and accessing the streets is not important. And I have a mobility scooter. My wife had heart problems and she had to walk to the store entrance so it definitely was more important to be close. Different strokes I suppose. But until you have been handicapped, you won't really know.

To me, the row directly to the right in the picture appears to still be closer to the exit and entrance,

My mother had limited mobility, and while she wasn't confined to a wheelchair, she came to rely more and more on her scooter. When going to a store (or anywhere, really) she always preferred being close to the entrance/exit when there was indeed a combination (as at many stores). If they were separate, she always preferred to park at the entrance. In fact, we would very often be that van at the entrance dropping someone off. As ctchandler notes, quick access to leaving was so irrelevant it never even crossed her mind (at least, she never expressed it if it did). She's gone now, but we're lucky to still have my father, who while not quite as limited is in much the same situation. He also wants to park as close to the entrance as possible, and when going to restaurants wants the closest table possible.

Slightly off-topic, but why do restaurants see a person who needs a chair/cane/walker and think "Oh, we'll seat them in the back room"? There are places Dad STILL won't go because they did that to Mom two decades ago.

So it's easier to get out of the store with all of your items than it is to get in the store with no items? Doesn't make sense to me at all but if you say so.

Looks like it's between the entrance and exit. The ideal spot if you ask me. But I don't think the difference of 30 feet is that bad.

Yep you read too much into what I said... I was only specifying the distance from the entrance to the exit of the store. I never mentioned the street.

Personally I would rather be closer to the store exit when I am encumbered than to the entrance of the store unencumbered.

I'm pretty sure that based on your response, you are not WinCo's target consumer lol. Not being rude or anything because I'm in the same boat as you. If you're used to how nice the Crest off SW 104th is, then WinCo is literally a low cost bargain warehouse.

I think there will come a day when I need to shop in bulk and WinCo saves the day, but until then I would rather shop elsewhere.
If their target consumer is someone who likes bad seafood, produce that goes bad in 2-3 days, less-than-desirable offerings, no sliced cheese from the deli, and a confusing store layout, then I guess so.

Otherwise, I think those aren't that off the mainstream for what a general grocery shopper might want in their grocery store.

As I slap my forehead! I've got it now. And I would have to agree except for one thing. Are there any stores where you can't leave from the entrance or go in through the exit doors? I think it's a violation of code. I know Crest had entrance/exit doors controlled for a lot of years but they don't any longer.

I never understood this too: people walk into a restaurant with canes & walkers only to be led past empty tables to the most difficult to get to. I was trained differently, rotatation didn't matter, common sense too?

OkiePoke,
Interesting. I know Crest was that way years ago, but they changed. I just assumed it was code. Obviously not, I guess Crest changed theirs because of customer complaints.

I would be perfectly fine with separate entrances and exits. With the exit having no outside sensor. It seems nine times out of ten whenever I go to a Walmart, some moron wants to run me over with their cart when I'm walking in on the side that says entrance, and then when I leave someone brushes past me when I'm walking out the side that says exit and glares at me like I'M the asshole. Maybe it's because I don't go there that often that I only notice it there, but I really don't recall this being the experience ANYWHERE else.

I totally agree, you and I are a-holes. The signage is quite clear, one side is for entrance and the other for exit. I don't budge when driving my mobility scooter through the proper side even when people try to get through. And I suspect if other stores had the same type of entrance/exit doors, you would see the same problem.

I was at the store in Moore today. Bad news for us wanting a quick opening at the NW 39th street location. The employees are telling me it won't open until March. I am really ready for it to open. I love their Hawaiian ham, and their bagels are really good. We are going there like once a week. We still go to Crest for certain things, but really like Winco.

So drove by yesterday after work. They have carts and such by the doors and I've seen cars there on my way home. Maybe it's closer now? I can't see having carts out front if they're not getting close.

On a side note of carts, I've never seen this many cart return stalls in a parking lot. Also interesting how they are one way, double laned. Smart. Is this normal for them?

However, there has not been any construction vehicles or really any activity there for quite a while. I suspect they are telling people that while the truth is they have been very slow to hire.

What's the traffic look like at the ones that have been open a while? From what i've seen, the MWC one looks to have slowed down a whole lot! Maybe its just the timing of day since i go pretty early on Saturday. I haven't been back because of the weird layout and the higher prices, but i'm sure others are still going.

The newness has worn off.... Hardly ever see the Moore parking lot more than about 1/3 full.

I was there about 8:30 AM on Sunday and there were maybe 8-10 cars there when I pulled in at that time.... Maybe 20-25 when I left.

I'm looking forward to the sales when the Portland store opens...... I'm now 50-50 between Crest and Winco for groceries and mainly because the Crest is closer to me. Winco has become my go to for BBQ meat though.... Can't usually beat their prices on Choice or higher briskets and I've been really happy with the pork butts I've cooked from there both quality and price wise..... Still prefer ground beef and steaks from Crest though.

I was pretty disappointed in Winco so i'm actually a bit nervous that they won't be around long and then we'll have all these big box stores left that were tailor made for industrial grocery. I'm mostly a shopper on price, and they just can't touch Aldi/Crest on the overall bill. I'm still spending an extra 20-30 a week if i went to Winco instead of Crest. But going between Aldi/Crest, i can save 30-40 over just going to Crest. Yeah it means two stores but for that much each week for a family of 5, its worth it.

Pete

I wouldn't worry about Winco; they do very well.

They wouldn't have closed on the Penn and Memorial property and started construction if they didn't have a lot of faith in the profitability of this market.

Don't get me wrong....I want to like Winco.
Grocery stores are kinda my hobby for years..I know...pretty weird. I check them out when I'm out of town.
Worked in grocery stores here and in a couple out of state.
Been to the one in Moore 4 times. Don't love it..don't hate it.

Reminds me of an exact copy of the old Food 4 Less at 122 and Penn and in Del City--minus the bulk food. Or the Food 4 Less stores in Joplin and Springfield MO.

My rotation is Crest and Aldi. I think the new Aldi remodels are great. I'd buy everything there if I could. I guess last in the rotation is Homeland at Britton and May just because that's where I get my prescriptions.

Don't get me wrong....I'm glad it's here...I will definitely shop at the 39th street store. Live pretty close to it. We needed a good store in the area. Thanks Winco for the investment!
Just wish it was some kind of a Kroger store.

For this area of town, there isn't a Crest reasonably close so I literally never go there.

Winco is a lot like most new big retailers in that you have to take the time to understand it and be able to quickly navigate. Once you get that down, their prices are great, selection is massive, service is excellent and they have self-checkout which is a huge feature to me.

They are also open 24/7 which means I can go very early and avoid the crowds.

I went to a WinCo for the first time ever last weekend (MWC) and I think the bulk food section impressed me the most. I was also impressed with the size of their plant-based/compostable/disposable plates/flatware, etc. I'm always very surprised in this day and age that more stores don't have a better selection in this category.

I personally love Winco because they have everything.

Most the time I only want to go to one store, which is why I sometimes end up at the Walmart Neighborhood Market on 23rd & Penn. I really don't like that store but sometimes I need an exact spice or bit of produce or staples like name-brand soda. Winco has all that plus everything else.

I like Aldi for the same reason I like Trader Joe's... Lots of interesting things you can't find elsewhere. But neither come close to fulfilling my entire list and therefore I only go once in a while.

I'm a very early riser so I'll probably go early tomorrow.

I loved these stores in California even though I didn't have one close enough to shop regularly. Now I am just 2 easy miles away.

AND the new Aldi will be a mile. Combined with the Sam's Club at 39th & May, I have fantastic grocery shopping options very close and even Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are only a few miles.
