The distribution center has actually broken ground and will be in Denton and will clearly be used for the OKC stores as well as those in the DFW area.
Now, they are using 3rd party distributors for their North Texas stores but their model is to have their own distribution centers to provide the best prices and products.
Winco will absolutely kill it in OKC. I suspect they didn't want to open here until this center was complete which will be late 2016.
shawnw 12-31-2015, 11:31 AM No credit cards, eh. Guess I will never go there ever since I rarely have cash.

They accept debit cards.
Their pay policy is the same as Costco's and I never found it to be a problem.
I use my debit card for groceries anyway.
shawnw 12-31-2015, 11:45 AM Ah, debit is fine. I thought they meant cash only.
jmpokc1957 12-31-2015, 09:21 PM I've been singing the praises of Winco here in the Portland Or. area for years. It should do just fine in OKC.
It's bittersweet for me as in a few months my wife and I are moving out to our property in the high desert of Eastern Oregon. The nearest Winco will be 2 hours away in Boise, Idaho! Awwwwwww!

The Tigard WinCo on 99E got a great deal of my money.

Dafonso7 01-13-2016, 08:19 PM I wonder just curious if they planning to new building in #3 at Midwest City and #4 at Moore for this year 2016?
SSEiYah 01-30-2016, 12:12 AM Before moving to Oklahoma I shopped at Winco almost exclusively when I lived in Idaho. They do not carry all the brands but the fruit and meat prices were impossible to beat, they were easily 20%-30% cheaper than Albertsons who was the other dominate store in the state. Other stuff was probably 10% cheaper as well. Buying in bulk can save you 50%. Winco does not carry all the brands so if you have a specific brand you like you still will need to make a second trip to another grocery store.
I visited the Winco in Lewisville, Texas last weekend, pretty much filled up the cart for just under $90, pretty much all dry goods for our pantry and two $2.88 24 packs of bottled water along with some fruits. They had whole tenderloins on sale for $7.88/lb. Next time I head to Dallas I'm bringing a cooler and bringing some steaks back. Most of what I bought was from the bulk food section and probably would have spent $160 if I was to buy the packaged options at Crest or Homeland here.
Winco will be a game changer here, no doubt, they will be extremely successful just like the Lewisville store was as the parking lot was packed at 7PM on a Sunday night.
u50254082 01-30-2016, 09:47 AM Does WinCo's quality make it a "race to the bottom", though? (I ask as someone who has never been to one of their stores)
I have no problem paying less, but I just hope we aren't in a situation where, yes we're paying a lot less for groceries, but at the same time it makes stores afraid to sell anything that isn't bottom of the barrel.
I feel like we're lacking in GOOD QUALITY grocery stores here. Everything is cheap, cheap, cheap.
Dustin 01-30-2016, 11:04 AM ^^^
Its not hard to sell cheap and fresh produce. Sprouts does just fine in that regard. I wish homeland and crest understood that.
I think Winco will surprise people.
My understanding is that there current plan is to start construction on all 4 locations this summer, with all opening summer 2017.
BTW, for all the other options now available in OKC's grocery market, WinCo will be the one that will be a straight crotch-punch to the Walmart dominance.
They have as good or better pricing, much cleaner and better stores, more selection, much, much better customer service... And I think there are lots of people who would happily go anywhere but Walmart as long as they don't have to pay more to do it.

You think it'll be enough to overcome the inertia of "We've always gone to Wal-Mart, why should we get off our route that we could drive blindfolded and figure out a new store?" I seriously hope so, but inertia is powerful.
^
Walmart will still have tons of customers it's just that those who are looking for something different / better will have an excellent option without having to pay more money.

This.
In OKC, a lot of people shop at Wal-Mart simply because they've not had better options. Five years ago, Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets were the best, nicest grocery stores in OKC. I don't think price is the only factor either, given how in the past there were so few other options altogether. I think WinCo will be the biggest threat to their dominance yet because they will give people an alternative that is also competitive on price.
Plutonic Panda 02-09-2016, 03:07 PM Pete, how many Winco's do you suspect will ultimately be open in OKC? They are starting out with four. Do they have an aggressive reach with a decent number of locations or do you think they will keep it at four stores for awhile?

Food Lion was the last Walmart killer......that didn't turnout well. Hopefully Winco will provide something that Walmart,Crest,And Uptown can't...

I don't think they'll do any more than 4 for quite some time.

A pity. Yukon (and to an extent Mustang, but let's be honest, places want to be near I-40) is quickly becoming a "you know what or get off the pot" area. Winco needs to get serious, or hope the Frisco road development happens and then wait 5-10 years.
RedSoxFan 02-17-2016, 10:25 AM When is the Moore store being built? I still haven't seen any signs up for it. Is it going to be on 19th St across from Target?
My understanding is that Winco will start construction on all the OKC locations this summer.
bombermwc 03-28-2016, 08:11 AM I was starting to wonder what was going on too. After a few years of holding on to a few of these stores, it seems weird that they wouldn't go ahead and renovate/open the stores that they already have a buliding for. That is, unless they plan on dozing the building. And if that's the case (like the old MWC Target/Ace) why bother leaving the current building there instead of tearing it down? It's not like the demo crews can do them all at once anyway. A lot of how they are doing this just seems very weird.
They are just busy with other markets.
They will demolish the old Target in MWC.

The way they are doing this actually makes much sense from a grocers standpoint. My understanding is they are building a distribution facility in Denton. They obviously would want all of their stores open at the same time and my guess is that they would want to do that after the distribution facility is built and operational.
They could supervise and complete construction in a timely manner working on all four at the same time. They could also cut costs. Just looking at it from a business perspective.
Yes, Winco broke ground in December on an 800,000 SF distribution center in Denton.
I'm sure they don't want to open their OKC stores until it finishes, which will be late 2016 / early 2017.
So, they will likely start construction here in the summer and open their stores in 2017.
EricGarcia 03-31-2016, 12:26 AM Have you heard if they are planning any Tulsa area stores as well?

Robert_M 06-28-2016, 08:01 AM Plans are out to bid for General Contractors on the Moore location for the middle of July. Listed as 85,000 square feet with the address of 755 SW 19th Street, Moore, OK 73160. Construction could start around late August and be complete sometime around the end of winter beginning of spring next year.
krisb 06-28-2016, 01:32 PM Any word on the 39th and Portland location?
Robert_M 06-28-2016, 01:36 PM Pete posted in the Moore Winco thread that they have not filed for a permit yet so that one remains uncertain about timing.
okiefied09 06-28-2016, 02:12 PM There is a permit under review for 39th and Portland.
seaofchange 06-28-2016, 02:48 PM Pete posted in the Moore Winco thread that they have not filed for a permit yet so that one remains uncertain about timing.
The Moore location received their building permit a few weeks ago!
[Edit, sorry, I see you were responding about the Portland location, my bad!]
Boise-basd WinCo foods has applied for building permits for its Moore and NW Oklahoma City locations, with the intent to open early in 2017.
http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/winco1.jpg
As OKCTalk was first to report in 2014, the deep discounter with a rabid following is planning 3 to 4 area locations: Moore, NW 39th & Portland, Reno and Midwest Boulevard in Midwest City and Memorial and Penn.
http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/wincoall.jpg
WinCo established its first stores outside the western U.S. When they expanded to the Dallas Fort Worth area in 2014. Now with 7 stores in that area and an 8th ready to open in Denton, the company is also well underway on a massive 800,000 square foot distribution facility in Denton that is scheduled to open in early 2017.
The first Oklahoma City area stores will open around the same time as the new Denton distribution center. WinCo has been using third parties to supply its DFW stores but part of their discount and quality model is to establish their own gigantic centers for all their locations.
WinCo is also looking at sites in Tulsa.
Now with over 100 stores, WinCo reduces operation expenses by purchasing directly from manufacturers and farmers; accepting cash and debit cards, but not credit cards; having basic, no-frills stores; and not providing bagging service.
They plan to got head-to-head with Walmart with comparable or lower pricing while using an employee-owned model that loyal customers claim provides superior customer service and excellent quality.
http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/winco10.jpg
The first two building permits are for 85,000 square foot stores at a cost of $10 million each. Selling just food and related items, this is more than double the size of a typical grocery store.
The Midwest City location on he site of a shuttered Target should be starting soon as well. The Penn and Memorial location has encountered site problems due to terrain and if it goes forward, would likely open after the first three.
WinCo stores are open 24 hours.

bombermwc 06-29-2016, 07:57 AM So what about the Midwest City location? The buliding is already there so it should be an easier process, but it would make sense to have them open at the same time. Did they abandon that location or are they simply waiting for the other locations to catch-up construction-wise?

Pretty sure that building will come down.
Yes, they will demolish the old Target in Midwest City.
I suspect all 3 of the locations will open about the same time, with the Penn/Memorial location happening later due to pond detention issues at that site.
In_Tulsa 06-29-2016, 08:38 AM Any word on how many or where the Tulsa ones will go?
They are looking for sites now. I don't think they are under contract with anyone yet.
bombermwc 10-07-2016, 08:01 AM Any updates on this? I haven't been in the area in Moore in a while but i thought i saw dirtwork the last time i was there....could have been another project. They still haven't done anything in MWC though. If they are going to raze the building, it would make sense to me to do that now so the are all under construction at the same time, so they can open at the same time.

Making good progress on the Moore site.
mbolerjack 10-07-2016, 11:52 AM Nothing has been done at the 39th St. site.

Ditto for the Midwest City site.

Yesterday I noticed there is road work being done along the frontage road near the 39th & Portland site.
I'm sure it's related to Winco and probably necessary before they can move in all their big construction equipment.
baralheia 10-28-2016, 10:47 AM I didn't have the chance to take a picture (and then kinda forgot about posting anything) but they are really moving on the Moore location.
Brett 11-05-2016, 07:47 AM Drove by the WinCo site in MWC and noticed that the entire construction area has fencing around it and a mobile home/construction office is sitting on the property.

I don't see that as being the reason as the curb removal extends east well past the point needed by Winco
This is the MWC site.
A bit hard to tell in this photo but they have started to demo the old Target and there is a construction trailer on site.

Zuplar 11-14-2016, 11:14 AM I'm excited for the one in Moore. Can't wait to check it out and see how it compares to Walmart.
yunome12@yahoo.com 11-14-2016, 06:27 PM Went to the Winco in Denton Texas last week. They will give Walmart and Sams a run for their money. I can see my family and I going to Winco weekly, rather than Sams or Walmart.
Regarding the MWC location, my understanding is they are having to remove some interior drywall from the old Target that may have asbestos and that is what they are working on now.
The building should be coming down next week.

Moore location is going gangbusters:
http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/winco112316.jpg
Brett 11-25-2016, 01:13 PM I drove by the WinCo location in Moore today to check it out. I could be wrong but it looks like there is only one way in and out when accessing the WinCo site. I wonder if the Moore location will open before the other stores located in Oklahoma county?
bombermwc 11-28-2016, 07:41 AM At least there's a stoplight at that one entrance though. Since it exits to 19th, you might as well pitch a tent and camp out without a stoplight.
MWC has a stoplight on the Reno side of the lot and the other side of the lot that faces Midwest does not have one.
Not sure about the northside one.
