View Full Version : Natural Grocers
Three new Natural Grocers coming to Oklahoma City.
One location is the long-rumored SW corner of 164th & N. Western. They are well under construction with a target opening date of 8/12/14. The site plans and renderings are for this site. There is a $1.75 million building permit for 16,000 SF.
The second -- according to their website -- is at 67th & N. May. I believe they will be taking the building just north of the Lakeshore Center on the west side of May and the site says opening date is 10/17/14. Interestingly, this is just a few blocks from the first Sprouts location in OKC at 63rd & May. Sprouts locations are typically twice the size of Natural Grocers.
5/5/14: Just learned there will be a third location on the SW corner of SW 89th & Penn, just west of the McDonald's.
164th & N. Western location opens 8/12/14.
70th & N. May opens 10/7/14.

Easy180 04-28-2014, 06:43 PM Yay! North and Norther lol
soonerguru 04-28-2014, 06:47 PM OMG. 67th and May? LOL
JesStang 04-28-2014, 08:28 PM Yay! North and Norther lol
That's exactly what I was thinking.
soonerguru 04-28-2014, 08:56 PM I think this just proves what mindless idiots these people are who decide on locations.
These are only 16,000 SF stores, which is less than half the size a Walmart Neighborhood Market or Sprouts.
These two stores will be more than six miles apart.
soonerguru 04-28-2014, 09:29 PM It will be across the street from Sprouts, and one mile away from Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. And a mile or so away from the new Uptown Market.
And only a couple miles south of the proposed Uptown Grocery, the nicest Homeland in the City and the best Buy for Less (Portland & NW Expressway) as well.
Yet, I bet they all do very well. Sprouts and Whole Foods certainly have and I would expect the same from the others.
63rd & May has long been the epicenter of OKC retail for a number of reasons.
Rover 04-28-2014, 09:35 PM And a mile from the new Uptown Market
Of Sound Mind 04-29-2014, 08:25 AM Always glad to see more options coming...
SoonerFP 04-29-2014, 10:21 AM Happy for us who live "Norther" to have another option just a mile and a half from my house! Of course Edmond has a Crest and a Sprouts just a couple miles away but there are a lot of roofs in that area and I'm sure the 164th/Western store will do quite well.
FourStarFitness 04-30-2014, 08:21 AM Pete, I believe the 67th location will be one shopping center to the north from the one highlighted on the map. They've recently moved rocket color out of that center and moved them to the one south of there. Also gentle dental recently moved out, leaving the entire shopping center empty.

Thanks for the info!
amaesquire 04-30-2014, 10:09 AM I cannot wait for this addition to the continuing traffic cluster-f*** that is North May Avenue.
Excited about the project, not excited about the location.
Rover 04-30-2014, 01:22 PM Amen on the traffic problem on May from NWX to about Britton. Needs its own streetcars running back and forth.
Natural Grocers is looking in Edmond as well.
Just learned there will be a third Natural Grocers location in OKC, this one on the SW corner of SW 89th & Penn:

Martin 05-05-2014, 04:03 PM awesome news... hope that doesn't diminish the chance of a sprouts near sw 104th & penn, though. -M

mugofbeer 06-03-2014, 09:06 PM Be prepared for some of the cheesiest commercials on TV! :)
Dustin 06-03-2014, 09:49 PM Very nice. Are they comparable to Sprouts?
Questor 06-04-2014, 05:00 AM There's a Natural Grocer on Main Street in Norman. It's been open about two years now. They are like sprouts in that they have a lot of organics and fresh produce, but in some ways are more like Whole Foods because they really focus on vitamins and allergen-free foods. They don't have as much in the way of fresh meats and don't really have a deli counter, at least the store in Norman doesn't. What they do have is all really high quality and their stores are deliberately smaller so you can get in and out quickly. Their staff is also really great. They carry many of the same brands as Sprouts. I actually like them quite a lot.
FritterGirl 06-08-2014, 12:18 PM We're stoked about their 164th location because once the roads up here are finally repaired, it will be within easy biking/walking distance. I would call them a no-frills version of Sprouts, but their focus is on all organic/GMO-free food items, which is one reason their inventory is smaller. They also keep their overhead pretty low. Stores are small, fixtures are very sparse, and they don't offer grocery sacks at all. You have to take your own or they will give you a box from their shipping inventory. I'd say more mix of Sprouts and Akins as much as anything.

Brett 06-10-2014, 05:49 AM I believe that the NW 69th St & N May Ave Natural Grocers location will put pressure on Akin's Natural Foods located at NW 63rd & N May Ave rather than Sprouts. Sprouts will hold its own in the battle of natural foods retailers.

tfvc.org 07-05-2014, 11:56 PM Just learned there will be a third Natural Grocers location in OKC, this one on the SW corner of SW 89th & Penn:
That is great news! That will give the natural food store on 74th and Penn some competition and hopefully they will lower their prices. I shop a lot at their Norman location and like their selection. I hope they open a small deli/smoothie counter. I lived in St Pete for 10 years and every one of their health food stores had one. Something I miss from the health food stores in the OKC metro. (Except for whole paycheck)
Just taken by warreng88 at NW 164th & Western:

warreng88 08-01-2014, 02:14 PM There was still work to be done (as you can tell by the porto potties) but it looked like it could get cleaned up and completely open this weekend if they try hard enough. Not sure what the inside looks like, of course.
Website says grand opening of August 12th.
70th & N. May opens October 7th.

I drove by the other location and forgot this was going in. Looked like it was completely gutted and ready for some construction. I'll try to swing by and get a few pics on my way home.
Martin 08-01-2014, 02:43 PM i wonder if sw 89th & penn is still in the works... -M

Again, if I get out and about tomorrow, I'll look at that one too and send pics to Pete.
catch22 08-01-2014, 02:46 PM Nothing is happening on that land right now, construction wise. So save yourself the drive.
Source: Just got a snowcone from across the street less than 10 minutes ago.

i wouldn't go out of my way... i'm pretty certain they haven't even broken ground on this location, which is why i'm wondering aloud if it's really going to happen.

turnpup 08-04-2014, 04:54 PM I'm a little concerned that this is going to look like what they've done to the other half of that complex. It's pretty bad. No, it's really bad.
OkieBerto 08-05-2014, 08:38 AM I am more concerned that our City just allows for May ave., an already way too busy street, to add more and more grocery stores. This reminds me of the Walgreen's and CVS battle. We will now have an Akin's, Sprouts and Natural Grocers as neighbors. Anyone else see this as a problem? Why can't one of these companies find a suitable spot downtown?

The traffic is freakin insane on that road at times

Sad thing is, it was like that in the 1990s.

Don't get your hopes up, they just resurfaced May from 36th to Britton and are getting ready to start the same work from Britton to Memorial, if I remember correcly. Oh and it maybe needs a fifth turning lane, but definitely does not need to be widened another one on both sides. A middle turn lane would get rid of a lot of the traffic there.

They also need to time the lights properly - going north when the Hefner light turns green, only to be stopped a block later when the Quail Creek one had turned red at almost the same instant as the Hefner one turned green. Same thing with 50th and the Target light. A turning lane would make May sooooooooooooooooooo much more drive-able! Never gonna happen, though, too many utility poles right up against the curbs for too much of May.

Good points all around. I think driving south from Grand through 50th is one of the more frustrating things I have to do at least once a week. Again, if the city would work on timing of the lights, it would be a lot better.
Plutonic Panda 08-06-2014, 04:12 PM I would just widen it to six lanes, put a landscaped median with turn lanes, and that would solve all the problems there.

I have seen many dangerous situations, especially considering there is no middle turn lane.

I think this could be said for most of the lights in our city. Downtown is also horrible. Yesterday it took me 5 mins. to go from Classen to Lee. I got all red lights.
corwin1968 08-11-2014, 11:40 AM The NW 164th and Western location was open this weekend. We didn't go in but saw a "NOW OPEN" banner on the front of the building.
brownb01 08-23-2014, 10:30 AM The store in Edmond is hugely disappointing. I will be amazed if these stores do well in Oklahoma.
Soonerman 08-23-2014, 10:44 AM They had one in Nornan for a few years and it seems to do well.

We went to the 164th/Western one this weekend, lots of shoppers, lots of selection, seemed like someplace we'll be returning to. Very Akin's-like, not sure how the prices compare between them, though, but we might use them instead of Akin's, less traffic...
