Our new (very old) house has no rain gutters. It very clearly used to, but no longer. Water pouring off the roof is causing some erosion problems in the yard, and more problematic water is not being moved away from the house leading to the customary basement water issues.
I need a recommendation for both (1) what type of gutters people have good luck with and (2) who is a trustworthy contractor to install these gutters.
Thanks!

We have aluminum gutters but they have some hail damage. On the plus side they should last forever. I'm not sure how long plastic gutters last but being in the sun all day has to take its toll on plastic. Here are some things to consider though. Make sure the entire roof is lined with gutters (don't just do the front). On the sides and back have rain barrels installed to capture the run off. You can then use that water for your lawn/garden or in a worst case situation - to drink.
