View Full Version : OKC in 5 words
Eddie1 04-20-2014, 01:05 PM I moved here from a large city on the East coast in the mid 2000s, the first thing that struck me as I stopped at a gas station off the 40 was how nice the people were. It cannot be overstated, just a different breed of people. For those of you that have never lived anywhere else I assure you it is quite striking. But, anyways, I thought it might be fun to summarize the city in 5 words as my initial impressions when I started to live here; Ill go first…
1) Friendly
2) Flat
3) Clean
4) Hot
5) Easy-to-live (sorry, I know its not one word)
Interesting exercise...

(i used to be an OKC "hater". i used to be a dumbass.)
PennyQuilts 04-20-2014, 10:03 PM Only parts of Oklahoma are flat. The NE and SE are hilly and lovely - and I don't just mean just the corners. If you think Oklahoma is flat, you owe it go yourself to spend a few weekends exploring - you won't regret it.
Warm (as in people)
Resilient (both the land and its people)
Spiritual (and I don't mean just Christian - as a pagan, this place is incredibly rich and alive - just amazing)
Moving (hang on if you want to be a part of it)
Underappreciated (I am going to call that one word)
The home of my soul.

mmonroe 04-21-2014, 09:12 AM 1) Friendly (I can't tell you how taken back I was when the door wasn't held for me on my first trip to Florida, my first out of OKlahoma vacation. People are different on the coasts)
2) Home (No matter how many times I travel out of state, nothing beats the feeling of coming back to OklaHOMEa)
3) Conservative (Our hearts may always be in the right place, but not our brains sometimes)
4) Diverse (From the landscape to the people)
5) Smart (What city can boast in development and be for the most part debt free and recession proof)

Bellaboo 04-21-2014, 12:07 PM More state than city, but my five words -
Archeologically exceptional, for 12,000 years.
MadMonk 04-21-2014, 12:38 PM Easy - Easy-going people, easy road layout for navigation, easy livin' in general with the low cost of living.
Friendly - 'nuff said in previous posts about this.
Resilient - Through the dust bowl, depression, oil bust, Murrah bombing, May 3rd, '99, Moore '13, etc., we keep dusting ourselves off and getting back up.
Family-oriented (counts as one hyphenated word :) ) - I understand that OKC can sometimes be a bit boring for single folk but, IMO there's no better place to raise a family.
Home - I wasn't born here, but it's "home" now and is the place I always look forward to returning to when I travel.

Another great list. One-dimensional, but great.

Interesting. Clean is a word I'd never use for okc. And I've been in quite a few places.
Matter of fact, while driving thru the city, it strikes me how dirty it is.

Clean definitely comes to my mind - in part because the wind that so many hate and our overall active atmosphere tend to keep things moving around. I detested the air back east near the coast because it felt stifling, hot and dirty. And I have to say that I heave a shudder of relief when I step off the plane from NYC because although individual apartments are clean, outside is just gross - just nasty - spit, dog crap, garbage, etc. Truly disgusting.
Urbanized 04-21-2014, 03:34 PM I think it depends upon where you are in OKC. Visitors regularly remark to that they can't believe how clean it is, but they often are generally if not strictly downtown, which IS very clean by the standards of most major cities. It's when you get out into the hinterlands that you start seeing litter and the occasional couch in the bar ditch.
bchris02 04-21-2014, 03:41 PM Depends on where on the east coast you are comparing it to. OKC is dirty compared to the "New South" like Charlotte, Raleigh, Nashville, etc. It's clean though compared to many of the older cities a little farther north. It's also cleaner than Atlanta. I was really surprised at how dirty Atlanta was when I went.

Can count on you to always try to stress how OKC isn't as good as others think. LOL. At least you are consistent.

Nothing untrue or exaggerated about my post.

No offense . . . But how many times a day do you wash your hands? Is all of the silverware arranged perfectly in the silverware drawer? Did you remember to comb the fringe on the throw rugs?
