View Full Version : Kilpatrick construction west of Hefner Parkway?
TheTravellers 04-17-2014, 10:37 AM I thought OTA used to list construction projects on their website, but can't find it. :icon_evil Anybody know what's going on west of the Hefner Parkway on the Kilpatrick (saw the signs, but haven't been on that part recently, wondering how messy it's going to be, and honestly have no idea what they can do since they just added lanes and everything seems to be pretty much fine)? Thanks...

I have't looked though and am not sure of anything going on

Thanks, but been there, done that, nothing in there that tells about it (I tend to check everything I can before I ask here if it's something that should be public knowledge, don't want to be told RTFM or LMGTFY. :D )
OKCisOK4me 04-17-2014, 01:09 PM The only thing I can think of that you'd be talking about is the mile or so length where the toll plaza is between Wilshire and Hefner. Looks to me that they're just adding more safety cable barrier.

That *could* be it, but the workzone starts right after the Hefner Parkway exit on westbound Kilpatrick, seems like a long workzone just for that. I get off on the Parkway when going west on the Kilpatrick, and haven't been eastbound on the Kilpatrick since it started, but I guess I'll find out tomorrow afternoon on my way home...
MadMonk 04-17-2014, 06:11 PM Would this be an extension of the widening project further to the west?

Plutonic Panda 04-17-2014, 06:58 PM Would this be an extension of the widening project further to the west?Doubt it, but would be nice. It would also be nice if they widened Kilpatrick to I-35 and rebuilt the two interchanges of 235 and Hefner Parkway.

Have you ever seen it even congested west of i235? Between i235 & i35 I rarely have ever see more than a few vehicles in front & behind be in either lane, I have seen far more traffic volume between MaCarther and NW Expressway, even in that area I don't even remember the last time I was in driving through and got stuck driving below the speed limit (outside of maybe a person failing to either pass the person they are driving next to or yield the left lane with miles of clear space ahead of them).

Bellaboo 04-17-2014, 09:36 PM This is just a guess, but maybe they are putting West bound exit and off ramps for Council ?

I was thinking this might be the case because there are numerous orange traffic barrels and signs being staged further west and heading south toward I-40 on the turnpike.

TheTravellers 04-18-2014, 05:20 PM Well, this is ridiculous, eastbound work zone starts at mile marker 115 (right before the roller-coaster bumpy bridge (and as an aside, anybody know why so many bridges on the Kilpatrick are like that?)), and goes to Council/Rockwell (can't remember exactly where it ended). Westbound it starts right after the Parkway exit and probably goes until the end of the roller-coaster bridge. Only work that's being done is around the toll plaza/Wilshire/Hefner where orange stuff is staged and probably for the cable barrier installation. No evidence of any ramp construction, just looks like cable barrier stuff. The rest of the way there is absolutely nothing being done at all. 8 mile work zone for maybe 1 mile or less of work. Yes, I know that they will keep the construction moving further "eastbound" while doing the installation, but really, a workzone for that that extends all the way into the jersey-barrier part of the turnpike? WTH?
Snowman 04-18-2014, 07:02 PM ... the roller-coaster bumpy bridge (and as an aside, anybody know why so many bridges on the Kilpatrick are like that?)
It was something like when doing the engineering calculations for the bridges, a miscalculation on how heavy the decks would be was made, so when they were constructed the spans did not have the weight to deflect down properly into a relatively level position.

Wow, how pathetic, thanks, thought it was something like that, but didn't know for sure.
Plutonic Panda 04-19-2014, 02:16 PM I think this might be it: https://www.pikepass.com/pdf/JKT-MC-9%20Plan.pdf
Can't screen shot as I don't have my laptop handy.... but it is for the Kilpatrick Turnpike Cable Barriers
Plutonic Panda 04-19-2014, 02:18 PM PS... it would be nice to see the entire portion widened to six lanes, but it isn't needed at this point. I'd rather them spend the money to bring true interchanges to the turnpike first.
Bellaboo 04-20-2014, 08:36 PM I drove it yesterday and it is all about the barriers - they are digging out dirt and putting in asphalt for a few miles to set the cable barriers in.
bradh 04-20-2014, 09:01 PM What kills me here is, why spend the money on the cable barriers if 5 years or less down the road it maybe gets widened? Is that not what happened on the net widened section?
Also, if any section needs car barriers I would think between 235 and 35 is a more heavily trafficked area.
ljbab728 04-20-2014, 09:43 PM What kills me here is, why spend the money on the cable barriers if 5 years or less down the road it maybe gets widened?
Because it could save lives?
bradh 04-20-2014, 09:46 PM Oh I am fully aware of the awesomeness of the cable barriers, I am just saying, this was a big complaint when the recent widening was done.
ljbab728 04-20-2014, 10:03 PM Yes, and there would be considerably more complaints if the lack of a cable barrier caused deaths. I have no problem with it at all.
bradh 04-20-2014, 10:05 PM I don't either, was just stating what I think some will say. I still think the eastern stretch would have made more sense first
