View Full Version : Bars/Restaurants that should be on Bar Rescue
warreng88 04-14-2014, 12:54 PM What are some Bar/Restaurants that should go on the show Bar Rescue? If you are not aware of what Bar Rescue is, it is a show where Jon Taffer, a renowned bar consultant, comes in, figures out the problem(s) with the operation of the business, then does a makeover of the physical business to make it better. All the while taking into account the demographics of the population around it. Typically the bar/restaurant does very well when it first opens but then something happens that makes the business suffer and profits start going down to where the owner is then paying money to keep the business afloat.
My vote would be for Scorecards in the Plaza district. This bar is just north of 16th street on the east side of Indiana behind Bad Granny's. I don't know the history of this establishment or even the owners, but it is in easily one of the hottest OKC districts. I am sure the clientele is different from what Empire, The Mule, Urban Wineworks and Saints pulls in, but they are the only bar that has been grandfathered in to only sell alcohol without food in the district.

They are a 3.2 beer bar. No booze. They also get pretty packed despite this fact. I think they like the status quo. If they moved to liquor/wine/strong beer they would be forced to open a kitchen.
But I can indeed think of a ton of places that would benefit from a Taffer visit.

Is that the place on Reno and May? I have driven by it a few times in the evening and it doesn't even look open anymore.
Urbanized 04-14-2014, 01:17 PM Hot girls, cold beer. Or so the sign says.
kevinpate 04-14-2014, 01:18 PM I do not know Scorecards, but I suspect if that show got its mitts on the place, it would have food in some form or another by the close of the rebuild. Taffer seems big on food brings them and keeps them longer. He's not wrong on that.
And space is not always an issue. In a few instances, food was provided by a food truck outside, either by agreement or based on the bar owner having acquired one.
Writing for myself only, I hope there are not too many places in the metro as odd as some of the BR places.

I know it was grandfathered in to the plaza district but I thought the zoning laws allowed it to sell alcohol beyond beer. Maybe make it more like Grandad's?
Urbanized 04-14-2014, 01:25 PM Yeah, it's always been a beer bar though. Completely different (county) licensing. So if they wanted to sell alcohol, they would have to get a license through ABLE, who they have likely never dealt with, and to have an ABLE license they would have to be ABC-2 or ABC-3 by City ordinance... ...except ABC-3 (booze but no food requirement) is unavailable in Plaza. So basically, no can do without ABC-2 (50% food requirement, kitchen needed).
I don't drink so I have no clue but I was in Arlington tx this last weekend and drove by a bar who had a sign up saying bar rescue was coming to their place on such and such date. I thought that was too funny.
It would be funny to see him take on the Silver Stallion. Don't think it would go very far.

Not every place has to be a hipster bar. Scorecards is a towny dive bar. Let the working class have a place to grab a Bud Light if they want it. I've meet the owner and his wife. Nice people, no pretension, no BS. If i remember correctly he played a few years for the Astros and started up the various business he and his wife handle.
trousers 04-14-2014, 08:48 PM Maybe you should try the Blue Fox.
Prunepicker 04-15-2014, 11:30 PM The only bar I can think of is Cock of the Walk on NW 36th and N Western.
That is unless it's closed.
Urbanized 04-16-2014, 07:02 AM Cock o the Walk is not closed, and pretty far from a good candidate for Bar Rescue, considering the fact that it is generally packed each night.
warreng88 04-16-2014, 08:25 AM Yeah, Cock O the Walk is a pretty good bar with pretty consistent business which makes me think they are making a descent amount of money. If we are talking about Western, Sipango's would be a better candidate from what I saw ten years ago and my understanding is they haven't done anything to it in that time. At that time, it was pretty run down and dirty, but it was one of the few bars that let people under 21 in.
