New Uptown Grocery to be approximately 55,000 square feet, which would be slightly larger than their other location in Edmond (48,000 SF).
6/3/14: Uptown Grocery coming to The Village (will have new features that the Edmond store does not have, including a pharmacy and a mezzanine level where cooking classes will be held. The Village development will also include about 3,500 square feet of additional retail space that will be leased out to smaller shops.
Uptown Grocery hopes to have The Village location open in spring 2015.)

Changed it for you.
Pretty sure this would be the site of the old Jackie Cooper dealership:

OKCDrummer77 03-25-2014, 07:13 PM Very nice! So, this would go into the former Albertson's on the NW corner, right?
OKCDrummer77 03-25-2014, 07:14 PM Oops. Posted after I saw Pete's map.
OKCDrummer77 03-25-2014, 07:15 PM Yeah, after I thought about it, Uptown would need nicer digs than that old building.
UnFrSaKn 03-25-2014, 08:04 PM The Edmond location and the bank next to it are what I would love see in new development in downtown OKC. It can be done, people just need to have a desire to bring it downtown.

Chitty 03-25-2014, 08:10 PM An "upscale" (expensive) grocery store at the same intersection as the "upscale" Homeland, and 2.1 miles (google mapped it) from the "upscale" Sprouts Market.... hmm I guess they think they'll grab that Nichols Hills money. Meanwhile the young and the restless in Midtown have the "downscale" Homeland off Classen.
How amazing would an Uptown Grocery be in Midtown??
Like just east or south of Fassler Hall?

They obviously don't read these threads. You'd think someone on their staff would realize they'd be perfect for a location Midtown/Uptown...
PhiAlpha 03-25-2014, 10:08 PM But, but I thought we had too many Walmarts within 50 miles of this location for this to even be considered...
In all seriousness, this is great!

Agree 100%
This uptown in the Village will be nice competition for the Homeland at the same intersection and the Wal-Mart at Penn and Britton. It's good to see the better grocery stores gradually expanding throughout the metro. I think Galliardia and Midtown could use one of these stores also. I would love for a local company like Buy for Less to fill the downtown niche rather than Target or Wal-Mart.

Like just east or south of Fassler Hall? When I worked at Uptown I saw Hank one time and asked him if they were considering it and his wife was with him(she designs the store) and she told me they are looking for a location in Midtown. It would obviously be branded Midtown Grocery(part of Uptown which is part of BFL).
This is now a done deal with the Binowski's buying the former Jackie Cooper BMW site on 3/31/14 for $1.65 million. It is a 5.6 acre parcel.
Plans call for a 55,000 square foot store to open in Spring 2015.

And how big is the one on Covell?

Will it just be the store or will there be a shopping center like the one in Edmond as well?
I believe it will just be a free-standing grocery store.
soonerguru 04-16-2014, 04:26 PM That store is going to do great there. Homeland is doomed. Good riddance.

That would be the lot on the north side of Berkshire Way, where the two buildings with the white roofs are. The one shown as proposed on the image was the former Lincoln-Mercury dealership.

I really like the way that Homeland turned out. They really stepped up their game.
Uptown will be a little closer to home, so I will end up shopping there.

I agree. That's one of the nicest grocery stores in the OKC metro area. It's as aesthetically appealing as any mid-market grocery store on the east coast. If all Homelands were that nice, there would be much less reason to hate them. Their selection could be a bit better though and they are going to need to step up their game even more with Buy for Less Uptown Grocery now up the street.

We drive quite a ways just to go to that Homeland. It's too bad they all can't be so nice as May & Britton. That particular store will be up to the challenge from the new Uptown Market, any other we could write the obituary already.

Homeland bought that store from Albertsons in 2007. They didn't step up anything, rather they only didn't screw up what was already built and established.

Not really. They've poured tons of money into that store since Albertson's was there. They've completely renovated the store. New flooring, lighting, widened the aisles, enlarged the bakery and floral, it's not just riding old coattails. It looks 10 times better today than when Albertson's had the store.
Lafferty Daniel 04-17-2014, 11:30 AM That store is going to do great there. Homeland is doomed. Good riddance.
I'm guessing you've never been inside that particular Homeland. It is their flagship store and much nicer than every other Homeland. Like it has already been said, if every Homeland was as nice as the May and Britton store, there wouldn't be as much complaining about how terrible OKC's grocery stores are.
Geographer 04-17-2014, 12:13 PM The Homeland at 12th and Alameda on the east side of Norman really isn't that bad either.
roci28 04-18-2014, 09:46 AM I have not been to Uptown Grocery, is this similar to Central Market in Dallas? Without the awesome wine selection of course...
Mr. Cotter 04-18-2014, 10:02 AM It's more like a nice Tom Thumb.
bchris02 04-18-2014, 10:46 AM It's more like a nice Tom Thumb.
Agreed.
Central Market in Dallas is in a league all its own and I doubt OKC will have anything similar any time in the near future. I don't see how such a store would be feasible without alcohol sales.
soonerguru 04-18-2014, 11:01 AM Agreed.

Intentional self parody? Whole Foods is doing great here.

warreng88 04-18-2014, 02:11 PM Do you think they will send out the same photographer who took pictures for the story on the Buy for Less on NE 23rd and MLK? Maybe he will take pictures of caviar, lobster and white bread?

And lots and lots of bottled water.

To me it doesn't look that different than what Albertsons created. If "stepping up their game" consists of changing the light bulbs, maybe Homeland can "step up their game" at 18th and Classen and somehow get the parking lot lights turned on when it's dark.
Can't wait for the new Uptown Grocery, wherever they may go in.
soonerguru 04-18-2014, 04:18 PM and lots and lots of bottled water.
lol.
Spartan 04-18-2014, 06:15 PM I will be curious to see the design soon, but will that come to pass since this is in The Village?
bluedogok 04-18-2014, 07:48 PM It's more like a nice Tom Thumb.
Those used to be called Simon David stores, the nice branch of Tom Thumb before Randall's bought them out. They dropped the separate branding before Safeway bought Randall's. When I lived in Dallas I shopped at the one at Skillman & Audelia, they had another location on Preston Road.
Urban Pioneer 04-19-2014, 12:14 AM I was at Uptown in Edmond tonight. It is an awesome store and would be perfect for Midtown.
Lafferty Daniel 06-04-2014, 06:27 PM Took these as I was driving home. They're not the best pics but shows that the old BMW dealership is almost gone

Lafferty Daniel 06-06-2014, 08:56 AM Can anyone post the picture of the proposed design? I couldn't get it to post.
If you look at the proposed design that is in one of the photos, they have the store turned to be perpendicular to May. I figured they would have it running parallel to May and placed in the back of the lot with the parking lot in between the store and May. Interesting.

I'll get the rendering from Uptown Grocery. Steve gets upset when we post images from the Oklahoman.
The orientation of this location is the same as the one in Edmond. The tallest part of the building is pushed up to the street and the entrance is on the side.

Thanks Pete. Seems weird to have the orientation like that.
jn1780 06-14-2014, 12:32 PM I wonder if Buy for Less will keep the Hefner and Penn location open? They don't exactly have the same type of customers, but they still technically have two stores competing with each other.
I love to see that whole shopping center demolished and a Crest put there. I know, I'm dreaming. lol
Spartan 06-14-2014, 01:01 PM How come their locations in Edmond and The Village will be closer to the street than on 23rd.
But this isn't bad here. Parking has to go somewhere as we all know.

I don't see why they wouldn't I don't think they would really be competing stores anyways. Does the May and 122nd Homeland compete with the one at May and Britton?

Yes, I'm sure the May and 122nd would see a lot more business if the nicer May and Britton store didn't exist, but Uptown Grocery appeals to a different demographic than that Buy for Less.
foodiefan 06-14-2014, 06:15 PM . . . but Uptown Grocery appeals to a different demographic than that Buy for Less.
depends on which BFL. . .

The Edmond and Village locations are just stores. 23rd is part of a much larger development. That might have something to do with it.

If the Homeland at May and Britton didn't exist, I'd drive to Sprouts just to avoid the store at 122nd/May. That store is just awful.
As far as the Britton Homeland, they did make a lot of nice changes in addition to the cosmetic stuff. They added a pretty nice cheese area, as well as a lot of "healthy" snack dispensers. They also changed the branding on their meat, which is one area I think got worse. I really used to like getting my steaks at that Albertson's, but now it's difficult to find a thick cut of beef for grilling.

Can't you ask a butcher to cut what you need?
RadicalModerate 06-20-2014, 01:30 AM Or buy a decent chunk of beef or pork and cut it up yourself, exactly as you want it.
Have to admit: I'm planning another Saturday Morning excursion to The OSU Farmers Market to do something akin to that.
A little bit of the Semi-Organic Well Cared for Chicken (two different forms)
Some of the Lamb from a related source.
No kidding: There really is a difference in quality and the couple of extra bucks you pay is worth it.
At least in my opinion.
Last time we were there, on a miraculous Saturday morning off, we bought some really fresh produce.
Made the best Ratatouille to date then finished it off with some extra good Veggie Lasagne a couple of days later.
The informal deal between my wife and I was: No Waste.
Tomorrow, it's the Designer Pasta--with some excellent, Store Bought pasta dressing--and either Scallops ala Gulfport or Chicken Sausages ala Buy For Less. =)
Or maybe some Tilapia con Lemon and Chef Paul. =)
With those pesky fresh dug carrots still lurking in the produce drawer.
And some herbs from the rear patio garden. =)
p.s. ljbab728: none of that means that I'm not still missing my local Braum's. within easy walking distance. =)
If "Uptown" moves to The Village I will stick with Homeland or Buy For Less.
When I don't have time to drive, on a leisurely Saturday morning to The Farmer's Market.
RadicalModerate 06-20-2014, 08:28 AM I'd like to retract something I said in the last "paragraph", above: Going back to the top of this thread, I noticed that the proposed location of this grocery store is where the abandoned luxury car dealership used to be, across from the Colonnade. This actually does put it within the city limits of The Village. The Village lost sales tax dollars when Albertson's--later Homeland, later ramped up and customized Homeland--moved south of Britton Road. If this project actually happens, I will be spending my grocery dollars there because I'm loyal to my adopted hometown. You may ask: "So, why don't you shop at the Walmart Neighborhood Market, then? It's in the Village." The answer is. my nearly pathological distain for anything Walmartian. Even Civic Loyalty has its limits.
barrettd 06-20-2014, 08:59 AM Can't you ask a butcher to cut what you need?
I've done that, and the meat just isn't worth it. I've started going to Kamp's, and I've been very pleased with the meat I've gotten there. It, too, costs a lot more than the packaged meat, but it's worth it to me.
EDIT: I should have mentioned previously Albertson's used to have very good cuts of meat in their packaged section, at reasonable prices. It seems all I can get from the butcher is about twice as much per pound, but I admit I may just be stupid. I was getting all of my meat at Sam's, but found my wife and I were wasting a lot because of the volume (buying 4 steaks when we could have really split one). Kamp's costs about as much for one big steak as I was spending on 4 at Sam's, but the quality is very noticeably better.
