What are the longest (distance and/or time) commutes people have or know of? I know of some Tulsa to OKC daily commuters and it just sounds terrible.

I know of some Tulsa to OKC daily commuters and it just sounds terrible. I have a friend who commutes from North Edmond/Guthrie to Norman. Can't imagine what the 235/77/44 interchange is like to him. Plutonic Panda 02-27-2014, 01:49 PM I commute from N. Edmond to south OKC and it isn't that bad. I know people who go from OKC to Tulsa as well and that must be horrible. I suppose once you start doing it everyday, it goes by just like that. I knew a guy who had a Ardmore to OCCC commute. Also have heard of someone commuting from Norman to Enid three times a week. AP 02-27-2014, 01:50 PM Are there a lot of people who commute that far? Seems like that would be a great reason to get commuter rail going. kevinpate 02-27-2014, 02:15 PM When I was with a state agency based in Norman, we had many people who drove in from elsewhere, including far NW OKC and other OKC locations, Chickasha, Guthrie, Welston, Midwest City. We also had several from Washington and Goldsby area, but I am not recalling anyone that was further south. Although I sometimes end up as far away as Altus and Fort Smith, I do not have any specific daily commute, and haven't for years, except for about 2.2 years of daily runs into south OKC. Anonymous. 02-27-2014, 02:48 PM Worst time per distance traveled has to be anyone going either way through I-44/I-235 interchange at 7-8am and 5-6pm. I don't know of any other 'every day' jams in OKC on that scale. It switches from southbound being worse in morning and northbound worse in afternoon due to sheer volume of Edmond and N OKC commuters. My next guess would be something like I-40 to northbound I-44/Hefner Parkway ramp, which is more of an inconvenience than a true jam. Plutonic Panda 02-27-2014, 04:09 PM Daily traffic jams happen nearly every day in I-35 going to Norman from downtown. It is horrible. That highway needs to be widened to 10 lanes.... make it eight lanes for general traffic with an HOV lane each way. thebigtamale 02-27-2014, 04:29 PM Don't know how the folks in far NW OKC or Piedmont do it. Just 3-4 miles of Northwest Expressway can take 20 minutes or more. And it's going through the highest-accident intersections in the city. This I exactly why we scratched it off our list when looking to move out of Heritage Hills. My blood pressure would have been sky high. I leave my house at sw of airport and can get downtown in 15-20 minutes tops in morning/afternoon rush hour and do it without ever getting on the highway. Up to Newcastle Road to Portland to 15 to agnew to exchange over bridge into downtown. Or now, get on I44 at sw 15 and stay right onto crosstown and stay right there onto OKC Blvd. Plutonic Panda 02-27-2014, 05:08 PM ::Facepalm::yeah, I expected that from you, Cuatrode Mayo, and few other folks. bchris02 02-27-2014, 05:31 PM I know a few that do OKC to Lawton. benjenn 02-27-2014, 05:45 PM I'm so thankful for my 10 minute commute from downtown to I-44 & MLK, near the Cowboy Hall of Fame. I drive opposite traffic both ways and it's great. Time is the one thing I can't buy more of. venture 02-27-2014, 06:06 PM yeah, I expected that from you, Cuatrode Mayo, and few other folks. Actually I'm disappointed you didn't say 10 lanes, double stacked with 8 layered interchanges flying over everywhere. ;) Plutonic Panda 02-27-2014, 07:22 PM Actually I'm disappointed you didn't say 10 lanes, double stacked with 8 layered interchanges flying over everywhere. ;)that was in the fine print BBatesokc 02-27-2014, 07:34 PM My mom is over 60 and commutes to Austin from Edmond a couple of times a week. Those are nice comfortable cars that have a good safety rating and get awesome gas mileage. Mel 02-27-2014, 08:37 PM Back in the 80's when I had to go to the "Main" office I would have to jump on the next flt to DAL and then negotiate the maze that was Love Field to find whatever office I was suppose to go to. gjl 02-28-2014, 12:27 AM I used to work with a husband/wife that lived at Lake Eufaula and commuted to the plant on Reno and Council. Don't know how they did it as many years as they did. There were several people that worked there that lived in Shawnee, Seminole and Guthrie. catch22 02-28-2014, 03:17 AM Back in the 80's when I had to go to the "Main" office I would have to jump on the next flt to DAL and then negotiate the maze that was Love Field to find whatever office I was suppose to go to. I know an aircraft mechanic based in Los Angeles that lives in OKC. He commutes (via air of course) once a week. Gets creative with shift swapping to work 2 20 hour days or 3 days to add up to 40 hours so he can have 5 days or 4 days off in OKC, respectively. Just the facts 02-28-2014, 08:47 AM I assume by commute you mean daily commute because while living in Jacksonville, FL I used to work San Jose, CA. I left my home at 2PM Sunday afternoon and arrived at my hotel in San Jose at 1AM local time. Total commute time - 14 Hours. The trip home Thursday night was even worse. I did that every week for 4 months. For a daily commute while living Tampa my house was 12 miles from the office. It took me 1hr 15min to get home (average speed of 9.6 mph). I worked with people who drove over 50 miles each way everyday and I have friends in Atlanta that spend over 4 hours in travel time everyday. kevinpate 02-28-2014, 08:55 AM Not so sure I would like the idea of the mechanic on my plane working a 20 hour shift, especially if it is the second 20 hour shift in a set. warreng88 02-28-2014, 09:14 AM My brother had to go to Houston for work for two-three days at a time, once a week for four months. Not a commute, but regular for a while. catch22 02-28-2014, 10:35 AM Not so sure I would like the idea of the mechanic on my plane working a 20 hour shift, especially if it is the second 20 hour shift in a set. I trust him. His signature is worth up to 75 counts of manslaughter (the capacity of the airplane he works on) if his actions were found to be negligent and result in the failure of a system that results in a crash or loss of life. In Europe some mechanics work 40 hour days and have a week off between days. 1 on and 6 off. CuatrodeMayo 02-28-2014, 10:35 AM I had a 25 minute walk home last night. no1cub17 02-28-2014, 02:15 PM Not so sure I would like the idea of the mechanic on my plane working a 20 hour shift, especially if it is the second 20 hour shift in a set. What would you think about your surgeon in the middle of the night working on minimal to no sleep? Could happen to any of us. Or taking your child in to Children's - odds are the residents taking care of him/her would have been up all night too. PennyQuilts 02-28-2014, 05:36 PM Back in Virginia, Husband got up at 5:30 so he could get dressed and leave the house at 6:30. He'd drive about 4 miles to the train station. From there, it was just over an hour into DC, then he'd walk to his office. Daily commute, to and from our door, right at three hours, fifteen minutes. For years. We were so happy to get back home to OKC. thebigtamale 03-05-2014, 09:22 AM Some of these beg the question "Why?" Is it a dream job but they're not willing to relocate due to family? Is the house paid off, so they don't want to move closer to work? Just the facts 03-05-2014, 10:06 AM Some of these beg the question "Why?" Is it a dream job but they're not willing to relocate due to family? Is the house paid off, so they don't want to move closer to work? For me relocation wasn't an option because the job was contract, even though some contracts might be for years. It was better for me to travel during the week and provide a consistent home life for the wife and kids than it was to relocate everyone every 6 months to 2 years. For people that have long daily commutes, it is a combination of cheap suburban land prices, low fuel costs, and interstate highway access back to the city. Even the rural hinterland is easily reachable although with the jump in fuel prices a few years ago long automobile-based commutes took a hit. OKCNDN 03-10-2014, 04:10 PM My cousin went from Watonga to Tinker AFB (78 miles) for years and years. Other people I know have done I-40 & MacArthur to north of Hammon (over 110) miles to do oil field work. Actually there are lots and lots of people right now in El Reno that stay in those hotels that drive to locations further out than Hammon for oil field work. They are exhausted enough from the oil field work then have to drive that? And my ex used to strip at Night Trips. So from there to Hammon for a commute. Another stripper there used to commute on weekends from Wichita to OKC. She was a grade school teacher up there in Kansas. And lots of girls would go strip down in Dallas from OKC on weekends. And a dealer at Lucky Star in Concho used to live west of Sayre and they commuted it four times a week. CuatrodeMayo 03-10-2014, 08:57 PM And my ex used to strip at Night Trips. Another one comes from Chickasha. One from El Reno, two from Guthrie, two from Shawnee, one from Cashion and four from Mustang. Bellaboo 03-11-2014, 07:33 AM Was on a plane from DFW to San Juan, Puerto Rico going on a cruise. Sat next to a man from California who told me he's was making his trip to work on a cruise ship. Was on 2 weeks then off 2 weeks, worked on mechanical systems. |
