(nah. prob'ly it ain't) It's a plot--by the International Protein Cartel (a subsidiary of The Illuminati) to sell more ground turkey and/or chicken. Here's the weird part: Seasoned and cooked correctly a reasonable person can't tell the difference! Even if it's healthier! Of course, when the only option in the grocery store is Solylent Green, that is the point that I will draw a line in the sand (or on the tile). (i feel a little sorry for the lobsters in the tank every time i visit Homeland. someone needs to give them a Sudoku book or some Scrabble Tiles. even if any of them would get soggy, i wonder what they would spell. don't even think about tossing in an old Trivial Pursuit Game Box) Apology: Mitch Hedburg rules. Here's a lagniappe from Chef Paul oops . . . c/o Mitch Hedberg: (in honor of Sid Caesar): I have a cheese grater. That's the positive name for it. If they used the other name They wouldn't sell a lot of them. The other name is Sponge Shredder. I tried to clean my cheese grater. Now all I have is a lot of tiny pieces of sponge. That would probably melt well Over some tortilla chips. edited to add: NOW i'm outraged. (really: who who ever actually attempted to clean a Cheese Shredder with a sponge? let's see . . . i count three hands up. =) Achilleslastand 02-13-2014, 03:21 PM Maybe it has something to do with the price of corn? For which we can blame our wonderful government and one of the biggest cons on the American people........Ethanol. Roger S 02-13-2014, 03:27 PM Has a lot to do with the drought in Texas and the early snow in the Dakota's that killed large numbers of cattle. Get used to it. Will be a few years before the cattle industry recovers from it. kevinpate 02-14-2014, 01:03 AM FWIW, hamburger meat at Sam's is rather tasty, and nearly always less expensive than anywhere else my lovely looks. Will be a few years before the cattle industry recovers from it. I completely forgot about that. I remember hearing the report from the Dakotas that thousands of head of cattle were killed from the early blizzard. kevinpate 02-14-2014, 11:29 AM Just remembered to ask my lovely. She checked and said earlier this week hamburger was 3.69 per lb at Sam's here in Norman. gjl 02-14-2014, 12:05 PM FWIW, hamburger meat at Sam's is rather tasty, and nearly always less expensive than anywhere else my lovely looks. And there is a bunch of it that has just been recalled. I got a call from Sams two days ago that their records show I had purchased some of the recalled beef. It is the Jensen 1/3 frozen beef patties UPC # 0009781431811 and Jensen 1/4 frozen beef patties UPC # 0009781484195 because they may contain beef that was processed without a full federal inspection. If you have any of these products you can return them to Sams for a full refund. We have eaten all but 3 patties out of the 18 that were in the package. I plan on taking the package with the 3 patties back and getting a refund. kevinpate 02-14-2014, 12:26 PM We don't buy frozen patties. We tend to buy bulk ground beef, 90% lean. We rarely ever buy even small two packs of chops, steaks, chicken, etc. Raised three children, with friends frequently in tow. While all are now grown and only one still lives in town, he and his lass visit, as do other folk. Buying bulk still makes more sense for us as a result. Depending on how much she is buying, her hamburger purchases will be a 3-6 lbs. on wrapped styrofoam tray(s) or prepackaged in 10 lb sealed tubes. We break it down into smaller portions and store in freezer bags. Some goes in one of the freezers, some in the fridge. Just depends what is planned for the next few nights. Dubya61 02-14-2014, 12:51 PM I, too, was shocked to see the leaner version was about $6 / lb last night. gjl 02-14-2014, 01:20 PM We just buy the 6 lb frozen 1/3 lb sirloin patties 85/15 at Sams. And if we need a lb for a recipe we just use 3 frozen patties. Just more convenient for the two of us. Just the facts 02-14-2014, 03:45 PM Maybe it has something to do with the price of corn? I only eat grass fed beef, why are my prices also high (higher than corn fed beef BTW)? Also, here is the truth about corn - and ethanol is NOT the problem. nvMxIEgbsIo Roger S 02-14-2014, 03:47 PM I only eat grass fed beef, why are my prices also high (higher than corn fed beef BTW)? Because there is a grass shortage due to it all being shipped to Washington and Colorado. ;) Just the facts 02-14-2014, 03:49 PM Because there is a grass shortage due to it all being shipped to Washington and Colorado. ;) OK - I actually laughed out loud on that one. I pictured my cows eating brownies in a scene like this... ilFi20lQ6cU Dennis Heaton 02-14-2014, 06:35 PM I don't usually do the grocery shopping , however i went to the store the other day to buy some hamburger meat and it was just the cheap stuff. When did it go to $6 a pound ? Climate Change! RadicalModerate 02-14-2014, 09:37 PM After all of that, I have to wonder why the price of beef didn't seem to affect the cost or quality of the steak dinner I prepared for my sweet wife tonight (for "St." Valentine's Day) (and for me too). I think the modest, yet more than sufficient, quantity of former cow (U.S.D.A. Prime, Angus, Strip--not sure if it was KC or NY) that she selected from the selection offered at the meat counter at the local Homeland store was just right. In terms of both quantity and tenderness. Since I let her pick out the steak, I am glad that she only spent just the right amount (I think around $12.00). When dinner was done, I would have to say that I would have probably been forced to pay at least four times that amount (each) at a restaurant. But I cooked it, so I'm probably biased. Perhaps it would be less expensive than hamburger to simply buy cheaper cuts of meat and grind it yourself? or to lean more in the direction of fish and chicken? =) I know that I'm lookin' at all the leftover bits of asparagus, onion, mushrooms, kale, garlic, carrot, etc. as the basis for a fairly tasty soup. I think she agreed. The big question is: will it be a 'cream' soup akin to a chowder? Or will it be a broth soup? Maybe tomorrow I'll decide whether to make it "Mexican" . . . "Mediterranean" . . . "Manhattan" . . . or Just Good Old American soup. I wonder where Abraham Maslow would file this thread in his "Pyramid of Human Needs" . . . (yet I won't wonder too much) Edited to Add an Auditory Reminder for Visual, non-Kinesthetic Learners (and in the interest of value recognition, outside of the price of hamburger meat. =): J2xM95lUKZg "He sang it and got all the glory . . . but I wrote it!" . . . http://25.media.tumblr.com/6e1cc0d5ab38378ee98648047298ac91/tumblr_mnn9icBi7E1spi1ofo1_250.jpg "yet . . . that doesn't piss me off nearly as much as the current price of hamburger meat." Jeepnokc 02-15-2014, 11:29 AM FWIW, hamburger meat at Sam's is rather tasty, and nearly always less expensive than anywhere else my lovely looks. I like the strip steaks at Sam's. I haven't gotten any steaks from the Chef's Store yet as you have to cut your own and haven't felt like doing that but will probably this summer. The brisket at the Chef's Store seems to be better cuts. We have a friend that raises cattle so we get a large half every spring so most of our beef shopping is walking to the freezer. It is much better than anything I have bought with the exception of when I splurge and order strips from Allen Brothers. Roger S 02-16-2014, 02:37 PM I can vouch for the Chef's Store briskets. I've started buying all of mine from there. mugofbeer 02-16-2014, 03:07 PM Because there is a grass shortage due to it all being shipped to Washington and Colorado. ;) and we have verrrrrry relaxed cattle, all looking for Cheetos mugofbeer 02-16-2014, 03:09 PM I think you all are totally getting ripped off if you're paying $6/lb for hamburger. Even the 90% lean at the King Soopers is tops, $4.99. Still possible to get 80% for less than $3/lb here on sale or at Costco (in COLO). (that reference almost made me think of Busley's, Red Owl, and Piggly Wiggly. Not to mention Snyder's IGA.) Man, Texas has it good - prime brisket! gjl 02-23-2014, 03:53 PM Just got back from Sams returning my recalled meat. The only frozen patties they are selling now are 75/25. No 80/20 or 85/15. Although the 75/25 are the same Jensen brand as the recalled 80/20 and the 85/15. Anyway I bought a bulk 6 lb pack of non frozen HB meat from the butcher section, 90/10 for $3.88/lb. |
