When and what did you pay for your first house? I used to work with some guys that said in the 1960s they had house payments of $65-$75/month. My first house wasn't that cheap but wasn't too bad either. In 1978 I bought a house near NW 45th and Ann Arbor. 1160 sq ft, brick, 3 bedroom 1 1/2 bath 2 car attached garage on a normal size lot for $35,500. My monthly P&I payments were $279/month on a 30 year loan. I was 23 years old and single.

Pretty sure my folks house when I was growing up was just a couple grand more than my current truck

My parents built a house in Mustang about 45 years ago. It was around 2,000 square feet and they spent close to $25,000. They paid cash so they didn't have payments.

Prunette's first house was near SW 44th and N. May. Circa 1967. The
payments were almost $44 per month. She wondered how she would ever
afford it. The utilities were close to $20 per month. One had to make over
$100 per month to make ends meet.

For perspective, the payments on our not so luxury 4 bedroom home near
SW 63rd and S May, circa 1959, were almost $100 per month. Seriously!
Add another $20 or 30 per month for utilities and another $30 for food and
one can only wonder how anyone survived.

In 1971 a 4 bedroom 3 1/2 bath on a corner lot was $32,000. Hey, the
payments were about $330 per month. I know. I lived there.

One of my uncles said, "hell, somebody could move in here and you
wouldn't know it for a month."

Makes me feel like I really overpaid for 1160 sq ft in 1978 but I looked at a lot of houses and the one I bought was priced accordingly.

Where in Mustang?

It's a pink brick house on Jones in the old part of Mustang. It's between Dolton and Juniper on the East side of Jones. I've driven by there in the last year but it's kind of depressing because it hasn't been kept up. It had an immaculate yard and appearance when we lived there. This is a picture of my car parked in front.

December 1994. 1200 sq ft house at NW 21st and McKinley. Paid $17,000. P&I was 213/month. Didn't have central heat and air or any updating but was clean little house. I still own it even though I don't live in it anymore.

SW 54th & Villa , 1000 sqft , single car garage , 3 bed, 1 bath , central heat & air paid $30,000 for it in 1994. Me and my wife were both 20 years old. I think the payment was around $400 per month. We lived there for 5 years, we wanted to move cause our youngest would be starting kindergarten and we didn't want her to go to Coolidge which was across the street. We listed it and within a few weeks had a full offer of $52,000, which we took and moved further south to SW 104 & Penn.

Husband is a Mustang boy - I'll ask him if he knew anyone there. He lived west of there in those days.

My first home in 1966, was goverment quarters (I was in the U. S. Navy) and it was really nice for newlyweds. My housing allowance was $105 per month so that's what I paid. In 1968, we purchased a small place on 26 E. 22nd in Edmond for $650 down, $100 per month. I believe it was $12,000. We only stayed there for six months. We bought three more homes and have spent almost forty years in the last/current one.

PQ, you may not remember it but we talked quite some time ago about your husband remembering our family's grocery store on Main Street. He was confused about my father's first name. The house is about 1 1/2 blocks from there.

My ex-wife and I (both in the Air Force) bought our first house in South Carolina in 1980 for $42,000. The lowest interest rate we could find was 13%. It went up 1/2 % before closing. Our monthly payment was $500 and some change per month. Thankfully, our BAQ and VHA almost covered the monthly payment.

Oh, that's right, thanks for reminding me that was you. I remember but just didn't think about it. I asked him about your folks' and he speculated that must be a nice house for the area. They paid considerably less to build a house west of there in that same general time frame.

Back when we were buying our first house, interest rates were crazy high.

My first house (1981) was 4 walls and a roof, best I could say about it. It was in Edmond on 2 ac. I paid $35,000 for it (There was another ac I should have bought with it) Sold it 2 years later and more then double the price. Bought my current 10 ac and built my current house. Best investment I ever made.

I forgot the interest rate was like $12.5% FHA. It was the cheapest loan I could find.

2003. Paid $138K for 1200 SF + finished basement in an inner suburb of St. Louis. Think Edgemere or maybe Belle Isle. Houses at that time in the neighborhood were selling in 1 day with multiple offers. But I found an old widow who wanted to move but needed some time, and we sort of agreed on a handshake so the house never actually hit the market. Fantastic investment, as it's a "1st house" neighborhood surrounded by much more expensive neighborhoods. Still can't believe my luck.

In 1978 I bought a 1 bed, 400 sq ft house west of May on NW 19th for $8000. It was built before refrigerators were common so an enclosed back porch had been built for the refrigerator to be in. It had a 1 car detached garage with a dirt floor. Only electricians would know what I'm talking about but it had knob and tube wiring. I rewired it to current code and also installed a floor furnace with a thermostat instead of just a manual valve. Man have I come a long way.

The house I bought in Gatewood in 1994 still had the knob and tube with screw in fuses. Total pain in the arse. We upgraded also.
