catch22 01-23-2014, 04:35 PM News 9 Rusty Surrette says Dd announced today an expansion of 13 new stores in the metro... Can't find any links to verify, anyone know of anything?
Would be cool to see one downtown.
HangryHippo 01-23-2014, 04:51 PM I would love a Dunkin' downtown. It's what America runs on after all.
shawnw 01-23-2014, 04:54 PM Yes please on the DD downtown, in DD even... :-)
Press release from earlier today:
Dunkin’ Donuts Announces Plans For 13 Restaurants In Oklahoma City
Canton, MA (RestaurantNews.com) Dunkin’ Donuts, America’s all-day, everyday stop for coffee and baked goods, announced today the signing of a multi-unit store development agreement with existing franchise group, OKD Holdings, to develop 13 new restaurants throughout Oklahoma City, Okla. The first of the planned restaurants will open in 2015.
Together, this team led by second generation Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee Misha Goli and his partners will manage and oversee the company’s daily operations for each restaurant. Goli currently owns four restaurants throughout Oklahoma City and has a vast knowledge of the QSR industry.
“We are excited to continue to expand Dunkin’ Donuts’ presence throughout Oklahoma City and play an important role in the daily lives of people who live, work and visit here,” said Misha Goli, Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee. “We have a passion and loyalty for the brand and look forward to the opening of our Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in the years to come.”
Opportunities still remain available throughout Oklahoma in Tulsa as well as outside the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. To drive its expansion efforts, Dunkin’ Donuts has aligned its strategy to support the growth opportunities and consumer needs of individual markets.
Dunkin’ Donuts’ new look includes four distinct restaurant design options for franchisees, each featuring variations in layout, color schemes, graphics, textures, furniture and/or lighting. These designs enhance the current restaurant appearance, environment and layout to serve people all day long. Unlike other quick-service restaurants, Dunkin’ Donuts allows franchisees to select individual elements from any of the four options, creating a restaurant design that reflects their personal tastes and preferences, and best serves their specific restaurant size and location.
Building a solid network of stores within a market enables Dunkin’ Donuts to invest in a distribution model that provides consistent, high-quality products that guests expect. In an effort to keep the brand fresh and competitive, Dunkin’ Donuts offers flexible concepts for any real estate format including free-standing restaurants, end caps, in-line sites, gas and convenience, travel plazas and universities, as well as other retail environments.
“Our secret to success is our passionate franchisees who provide a high-level of customer service to our guests every day,” said Grant Benson, CFE, vice president of global franchising and business development, Dunkin’ Brands. “We believe these existing franchise partners will become an important part of the local communities they serve.”
Since the 1950s, Dunkin’ Donuts has been a daily ritual for millions of people. For more than 60 years, Dunkin’ Donuts has offered delicious food, beverages, and friendly service at a great value. To best serve its guests, Dunkin’ Donuts offers an all-day menu including iced coffee, flavored coffees, lattes, Dunkin’ Donuts K-Cup® Packs, Coolatta® frozen drinks, muffins, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and a DDSMART® menu featuring better-for-you items.

Plutonic Panda 01-23-2014, 08:06 PM They've had one here in Edmond for awhile, are there any others in the OKC metro area?
foodiefan 01-23-2014, 08:15 PM Restaurants?? Not just coffee/donut shops??

Wow - and 13 more? That's major expansion. Surely one will be somewhere in the city center.
bchris02 01-23-2014, 09:31 PM Would people really want a Dunkin Donut's downtown, in Deep Deuce for instance, or would you rather a mom and pop bakery/donut shop?

For some of us, nothin' but Dunkin' coffee will work. No matter what they say, the Dunkin' Coffee you buy at the grocery store just isn't the same.
shawnw 01-23-2014, 11:13 PM Makes me even more annoyed that they closed the Classen location a few years ago...

We already have mom and pop donuts in Midtown (Brown's), so why not DD in DD?
Mike_M 01-23-2014, 11:19 PM I love local, but Dunkin coffee is amazing and way more budget friendly. Bring it on! My wife is gonna be ecstatic.
Paseofreak 01-23-2014, 11:56 PM Yep. Dunkin Donuts coffee and the Old Fashioned donuts are the deal makers. Everything else is superfluous.

Mastermind 01-25-2014, 01:51 AM This is so exciting!! Being from the East Coast, it took me forever to get use to the fact that there wouldn't be a DD around every corner in Oklahoma.
I hope I can get their hot chocolate somewhere near me in the future. The closest location to me is the Edmond one :(
Soonerman 01-25-2014, 02:10 AM Please come to Norman!!

It isn't the same. The store-bought DD coffee is just some generic coffee produced by a company that licenses the DD name. My mom found that out after she never could quite figure out why she couldn't make a pot of her DD coffee taste like what she'd get when she'd get a cup at the DD she'd visit with her brother on occasion. Then the lady at the DD told her the story, which didn't really surprise me too much.
As a bit of historical trivia, there used to be Dunkin Donut shops all over town - on S. Penn north of 59th was one we frequented a bunch...but they (well, most) just disappeared. Great to see more stores coming in, giving folks more options.
bluedogok 01-25-2014, 09:25 AM They just started reopening here in Denver right before Christmas.
UnclePete 01-25-2014, 10:27 AM Don't think too highly of Dunkin Donuts--just sweet. In the past, enjoyed Shipley Donuts in Arkansas and Texas, and Spudnuts in Guthrie.

But the store bought DD Apple Pie and Mocha Mint is really good anyway. Thanks for clarification - explains a lot.
My sister worked at the (dearly departed) Classen store in early 70's. They got to bring home mistakes such as over filled or stale donuts. I can thank DD for the beginning of my addiction to chocolate cream filled donuts.
They were better before they remodeled the OKC stores. Had way more varieties. Now the one on 39th locks their doors at 11:00 and you have to use the drive thru. You can't see what they have made and what they are out of at the drive thru.

Same! I got so excited when I heard this.
Achilleslastand 01-25-2014, 08:47 PM Dunkin Donuts is great but I always preferred Winchells.
bluedogok 01-26-2014, 10:03 AM Dunkin Donuts is great but I always preferred Winchells.
I preferred Frankie's BIG Doughnut at NW 19th & Portland. Up here in Denver we go to LaMar's, in Austin we split between Krispy Kreme and Shipley's.
HangryHippo 01-27-2014, 10:25 AM Dunkin Donuts is great but I always preferred Winchells.
Winchells was the best donut shop EVER. I miss it every time I want a donut.
But I do love DD coffee and a french cruller.
JesStang 01-27-2014, 10:47 AM I'm excited! I hope they put one near Mustang. They lean more towards cake donuts than other people and those are my favorite.
The awesome thing about them is that they don't close early (or at all)! The problem with "mom and pop" stores are that unless you wake up early on the weekends, you aren't getting donuts!
I really loved the Baskin Robbins combined stores when I visited out east; they should totally do that here.
corwin1968 05-27-2014, 02:51 PM My wife and I recently fell in love with DD's iced lattes and iced coffee. The Edmond location is a bit of a drive so were thrilled to hear the plans for 13 more. We can't imagine that there won't be one someone near the Quail Springs area. Hopefully more North than South.
Joe Kimball 05-27-2014, 03:24 PM I can't believe I just saw this news. This will be great! Mom-and-pop type stores are well and good, and Brown's cinnamon sugar donuts will always have a place in my heart. But to my perspective, there's a glut of M&P in Oklahoma City. Expansions of chains as these, and their just-as-unique offerings in many instances, are welcome.
soonerguru 05-27-2014, 03:44 PM Not a Dunkin' fan at all. Mom and pop donut shops are the best by far.
HangryHippo 05-27-2014, 03:58 PM Not a Dunkin' fan at all. Mom and pop donut shops are the best by far.
Um, American runs on Dunkin'. And it's delicious.
Rover 05-27-2014, 03:59 PM Where are the mom and pop shops/bakeries in OKC? It doesn't seem like we have many. Would love to have something even within a couple miles from me.
At least many DD stay open 24 hrs and have a lot better selections than most small shops like Daylite Donuts. And DD coffee is generally better than Starbucks.
Joe Kimball 05-27-2014, 04:21 PM Two that come to mind are the What-A-Donuts on the far NW side of the city, and the aforementioned Brown's on the circle, across from Kaiser's. I just thought of another on 10th and Meridian-ish, which is of some note with their eclectic offerings which I'll need to try.
I know there's more. I ask your understanding that I only have these at instant, since I don't make a career of donuts, and the knowledge of only two of these places has been sufficient for me.

Have you had Brown's Bakery? Easily my favorite in the metro.

I missed this the first time.
I will add with this that maybe I was a bit hasty with my dismissal of donuts as a career. I like to watch what I eat for a variety of reasons, and I'm not always able to hop on the bicycle to compensate for a fistful of them. :) It was with that sentiment in mind that I wrote that, and I would more accurately say, along with my friend's testimonies, that I am truly something of a connoisseur. Anyway:
Yes! The odd hours. What-A-Donut has largely changed this last I saw, but they used to close around lunchtime. Most of these smaller donut shops have their prime time around 6:30 to 8 in the morning, with their respective klatches of elders, and the selection (and firmness) usually takes a dive thereafter. One of my favorite times for donuts is at night, when these purportedly-superior ones (de gustibus non est disputandum, you know) are barely glints in the baker's eye.
oklip955 05-27-2014, 05:07 PM I'll trade the Edmond DD for a good Europeain pastry shop. I want my morning strudel.
oklip955 05-27-2014, 05:09 PM Also some good Austrian pastry with my coffee would be great.
Plutonic Panda 05-27-2014, 06:03 PM My wife and I recently fell in love with DD's iced lattes and iced coffee. The Edmond location is a bit of a drive so were thrilled to hear the plans for 13 more. soonerguru 05-27-2014, 06:33 PM Have you had Brown's Bakery? Easily my favorite in the metro.
Browns's donuts are good. Also good: Polar Donuts. Pretty much the best glazed I've had in town (I don't eat donuts anymore, though).
foodiefan 05-27-2014, 08:51 PM Where are the mom and pop shops/bakeries in OKC? It doesn't seem like we have many. Would love to have something even within a couple miles from me. . . .
Polar at NW 10th and Meridian. . . they are potato based. . . and they will offer a "hot fresh glazed" while they make your order!! The apple and peach fritters are the best in town!!!
MWCGuy 05-28-2014, 03:05 AM There are many Mom and Pop Donut Shops around. Are favorite is Tinker Donuts on Air Depot and Best Donut across from Dunkin Donuts in Del City. I also love Dunkin and Krispy Kreme.
The only downside to the local places is that you have to get up early if you want the good stuff. Most shops lock the doors as soon as the day's batch is consumed or mostly consumed.
corwin1968 05-28-2014, 01:59 PM My grandfathers friends owns that franchise. I get free donuts there :o
Any insider information on future locations?
shawnw 05-28-2014, 03:04 PM inside my belly
:-P
Dubya61 05-28-2014, 03:21 PM There's a good donut shop on Harrah Road in between SE 44th and SE 29th. The baker there does great apple fritters and others and transitions to a lunch / dinner menu around noon.
Plutonic Panda 05-28-2014, 06:01 PM Any insider information on future locations?no sorry man :p
capt_john_97 06-06-2014, 08:37 AM I would love to open a franchise on the NW side of town and I know the perfect location but we will see what they do.
RadicalModerate 06-06-2014, 09:57 AM Polar at NW 10th and Meridian. . . they are potato based. . . and they will offer a "hot fresh glazed" while they make your order!! The apple and peach fritters are the best in town!!!
"Potato Based" . . . hmm . . . is this, perhaps, a sort of resurrection of the famous Spudnut? It would be a wonderful thing if it was. Spudnuts were GREAT!!!
(of course, I have to drop another 20 pounds before I'll permit myself a donut so it may be a moot point, yet . . .)
Say! You know how they just permitted a Gun Range that also serves adult beverages?
How about a donut shop with a well-stocked bar and a good beer selection?
They could call it "Drunken Donuts" . . .
Throckmorton 06-06-2014, 11:32 AM How do you people bump this thread today of all days (http://time.com/2827303/national-donut-day-2014/) and not mention the free donuts at DD and KK?

Because I for one was unaware that there were free donuts at DD and KK
ljbab728 09-03-2014, 12:03 AM Another example of the "grass is always greener" syndrome. I always considered Dunkin Donuts to be just another run of the mill donut chain (not bad but nothing special).

If you're up for a road trip, there is one Winchell's Donut House left located in Enid, OK.
catch22 09-03-2014, 07:17 AM So have we heard anything else of this rumored expansion?

Exactly.
I lived in Oklahoma for 29 years and had never set foot in a DD, yet I have friends out here that are completely obsessed, simply because we have not had them in California.
I know all about this opening because about 10 of my friends have been posting on Facebook about it for months.
Remember how people lined up fro Krispy Kreme? Now, most of them are closed.
Swake 09-03-2014, 08:30 AM I spent last week in New York and Philadelphia where Duncan Donuts are seemingly on every corner and are the only common breakfast option, at least in Philly. We tried DD a couple of mornings but they are really pretty bad. Bad donuts, bad bagels, just really a bad chain. Even Einstein Bagels are better, and I can't stand Einstein.
DoctorTaco 09-03-2014, 08:57 AM Now I am not going to defend DD very vehemently, as they are a pretty low-quality chain. I will say that they are the only place to get donuts every day of the week, outside of the morning hours. Also, unlike their local competitors, DD makes donuts throughout the day, so if you walk in at 4 PM you will get something decently fresh. Better selection than most competitors also, and the Kruller...mmmmmmmhhh. Nothing else quite like it. Pretty cheap even for the "specialty" donuts (Fritters and the like) and adequate coffee. In summation, I do not go out of my way to hit up a DD, but I would not object to there being more of them around.
Mr. Cotter 09-03-2014, 09:04 AM I don't care for their donuts, but I get coffee from the DD at 36th and May pretty regularly. It's nice to have close, but I wouldn't stand in line like that for one. I imagine Santa Monica must have dozens of better donut options.
soonermike81 09-03-2014, 09:37 AM Now I am not going to defend DD very vehemently, as they are a pretty low-quality chain. Now, I am not 100% sure, but I'm almost certain that their donuts are not freshly baked at their individual locations. I was told by somebody in the know, that they have a system similar to 7-Eleven. Their donuts are baked at a central location, then transported to the individual shops. They have to do this because the donut making process is actually a somewhat difficult process. And in no way will their employees, who are making $8/hour, be skilled enough to bake donuts. Although I do like the fact that you can get donuts there throughout the day, I will go with a local mom-and-pop shop any day the week. Their donuts are at least 10 times better
As to whether the donuts are made in the individual store, it depends on the market and the stores themselves -- and the local ownership.
I suspect in OKC most locations do not make their own and rather rely on a centralized facility. Makes sense when you have a decent number of stores in close proximity.
