View Full Version : Crest on Sooner and Covell
jdross1982 08-10-2022, 04:58 PM Edmond is not wanting to build the 4th HS at this time due to numbers. The district does not want any of the HS's to drop below 6A and Memorial will if a new HS is built.
I think what will most likely happen is they will start building on the Covell and Air Depot site but use as a MS to give it time. The district has also purchased land at Covell and Westminster (4 miles to the east of the HS property) for a MS. Edmond has done this for both North and SF I believe. This also would allow the district to spread out the cost to build the HS over a couple bonds.
^
Edmond North started as a Mid-High (9th & 10th grades only) and was then upgraded to a high school in 1993.
Santa Fe was newly built as a high school in 1993.
It would make a lot of sense to follow a similar plan as North with the idea of turning it into a full high school when demand warranted.

Unless numbers have significantly dropped at Memorial, Edmond North, Santa Fe, and Memorial all have about the same average number of students between 2300-2500 students annually in regards to OSSAA Sports Classification.

If they do not plan on adding another high school, something will need to occur at the other three sites to address classroom sizes as the population of Edmond has basically doubled since 1993 when Santa Fe and North were added, and there are plenty of more people too in OKC City Limits, but Edmond School District.

Look at what the Tulsa area high schools have. Then realize the Westside hasn't won a state football title in 3 decades.

Edmond should just past a bond, call it "Children for Championships" to build one mega high school in the center of Edmond with 7500 students to rival the Tulsa districts that refuse to split! :p

Not sure how they would district it. But if they could move about 300 from each school to create new 4th HS. It would leave the existing schools as 6a-1 and then new school would be middle of 5A and would probably rapidly grow because east edmond will be taking off in coming 10-20 years or sooner.
But anyhow.
Can’t wait for Crest to be built! Back to subject

Then look at the academic success of Edmond verses those Eastside school districts. Winning in football should not be a consideration for when to build a new high school.

+1
Football is one sport that directly impacts such a small number of the total students at the school. 6A School football roster is maybe 50-60 kids? Sure marching band and cheer compliment the sport, but there are so many students who do something other than that. For example, having to work at Crest.

And combining into one massive school actually limits the number of kids that can do all of those activities. The only benefit of it is it combines all the top talent so the team has a better shot of winning.

closer to and in lots of cases over 100 between varsity and freshman on the big 6a1 teams ..

Yeah, Jenks, Broken Arrow and Union schools are compete garbage academically... You're right.
Plutonic Panda 08-30-2022, 09:39 PM Here’s an article about the Crest Store groundbreaking: https://okcfox.com/news/local/crest-foods-holds-groundbreaking-ceremony-for-store-in-east-edmond-covell-sooner-roads-kevin-stitt-construction-open-2023-grocery-tax-oklahoma-retail-development
Plutonic Panda 09-01-2022, 12:13 AM I knew this was coming lol
I have mixed emotions to be honest with you,” said Sam Anderson, a resident of the neighborhood adjacent to the store site. “I'm excited because I do like Crest, I like their stores. I'm also a little bit concerned because I do fear the traffic that it's going to create in the area.”
https://www.oklahoman.com/story/news/2022/08/31/edmond-residents-generally-supportive-of-new-crest-foods-store/65458935007/
These people live on the fringes of a major metropolis near roads that were widened to 3 lanes each way and they’re still worried about the typical Edmond complaint “increased traffic” lol
jdross1982 09-01-2022, 07:52 AM Oh my, the back of the store will look so horrendous with all that brick. SMH. Traffic won't be a concern once Covell is expanded to 4 lanes from I-35 to Broadway and beyond.

Worried about traffic in an area right off an interstate exchange? Never fails to amaze me.
jerrywall 09-01-2022, 11:27 AM Eh - I can see anyone who has to deal with that damn Covell traffic daily being concerned about the increase. It's not like they're saying they oppose it.
The Covell and Coltrane intersection needs to be redone before this opens (in a perfect world), and hopefully Sooner will be widened to 4 lanes before too long.

I think you are being sarcastic, but I suggest you look at the rankings. Those school are complete garbage compared to Edmond. I say this as a BA alum.

Bowser214 03-13-2023, 05:27 PM Does it come with GPS in case you get lost? Looks massive.
It will be about 10% bigger than the 3 area Wincos.
Silvershoes 03-14-2023, 09:24 AM Does it come with GPS in case you get lost? Looks massive.
It will be as large as the Norman Crest when it opens, which is the largest in the chain.
I was by the Crest at Czech Hall Sunday around noon and there were hundreds of cars.
This location is going to absolutely kill it.
Good for Crest, a local company that has found a way to be very competitive and keep building stores in an incredibly tough industry.

They aren't done either. Looking at land out along the Portland Expressway area north of Memorial for # 11..........That area (Deer Creek - Piedmont) is going to explode over the next 15-20 years.
^
That would be such a great location for them.
They seem to be savvy about getting out in front of high-growth areas.

This would be amazing!!!! Would be nice not to make the drive over to the Edmond location on 164th & Santa Fe
Silvershoes 06-18-2023, 05:31 PM It looks more and more like the Fall opening will happen. Good progress has been made the past 2-3 months on construction. The one concern was getting all the refrigeration units needed inside the store but it appears barring something unexpected all will deliver in time. Ideally, late October opening.
Thanks for the update.
They are going to murder it at that location.
BoulderSooner 06-18-2023, 09:08 PM i all recently heard that anther development should break ground close by.... timeframe is the end of this year .
should bring more retail/ restaurants to the area
Plutonic Panda 06-18-2023, 09:37 PM ^^^ like a big retailer or restaurant or just a typical pad site type?

Edmond is fast tracking a red light and turn lane into the store. I noticed the work has started on that expect the store opening is dependent on that work on sooner being finished. Edmond offering financial incentives to get it finished early to contractor.

That's a good thing. If you have ever been to the Czech Hall location, it's just a mob scene most of the time and there are traffic issues getting in and out of there.

Thankful they are doing it now as I think it could be needed much sooner than expected. There is an entrance off Covell but off Sooner will be main road in.
Ready for the SW corner development to be announced.

My biggest issue with that location is Czech Hall Rd itself. The road is rather poorly lit, and it's very hard to see the eastbound I-40 entrance after dark.

That 15 acres is owned by Taber LaBlanc the owner of taber homes. He would benefit by further developing this area commercially as his company premium land has lots of future housing developments planned in this area of east Edmond
I don’t show the ownership has transferred yet. Wonder if he will be behind the development

I believe they are about same size. Accessor has the Santa Fe store listed at 111k sq feet. The new store is listed at being over 100k so probably around same size store. It seems bigger with just how design is with taller front and taller building
Elrenogolf 10-09-2023, 01:54 PM Aren't there corporate offices at the Santa Fe store which makes the building bigger than the actual shopping area?
Tyson 10-09-2023, 02:47 PM Yes, the Santa Fe store has offices at the front part of the store on a second floor. Not sure how much bigger that makes it. It's only a few offices that have windows facing the front of the building. Sort of crammed in there.
Silvershoes 10-12-2023, 11:21 AM Aren't there corporate offices at the Santa Fe store which makes the building bigger than the actual shopping area?
Yes, the majority of corporate personnel work at Sante Fe & 15th, some though are in Midwest City........As for the customer experience the new store being built is about the same size as the one in Yukon. The Norman store is the largest location.

Stillwater has 50k people, 2 Walmart Supercenters, a Homeland, Sprouts, Aldi. It's not like its a food desert.
Guessing they are going after the same crowd that makes a trip down to OKC for a Sam's or Costco trip?

The hope would be people from Stillwater-Guthrie-Langston might come up for their 1st of month shopping. Nobody has expectation those folks are driving up for Milk and Bread.
