What a catch!

"NORMAN — Oklahoma’s Sugar Bowl victory over No. 3 Alabama continues to pay dividends, as the Sooners picked up a commitment Saturday from five-star running back Joe Mixon."

"Mixon — the nation’s No. 1 all-purpose back according to Rivals — announced his pick during the U.S. Army All-American Game in San Antonio. He chose the Sooners over UCLA, Wisconsin and California."

Yeah, haven't landed that big of a recruit for a while.

You've got to believe the win over Bama helped greatly.

That game may prove to be a huge pivot point in many ways.

He could contribute immediately next year with OU's running back situation.

Some key recruits: University of Oklahoma

Keith Ford

Football Recruiting - Keith Ford - Player Profiles - ESPN (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/143558/keith-ford)

"Oklahoma had its arms wrapped around the 5-star running back and we needed to get the story straight from the source. Peterson had ceased communicating with the outside world via phone. So I, being a young, hustling reporter, decided I would just show up at his front door, pen and paper in hand...

...When I made this similar trip 10 years ago, Peterson was already in the bag for OU. Mixon is going to make his decision during today's noon game which will be televised on NBC. He's scheduled to announce his college choice between OU, UCLA and Wisconsin during the fourth quarter."--Josh McCuistion Oklahoma Sooners Football: SoonerScoop.com (http://oklahoma.rivals.com/)

That's true, Keith Ford last year and Mixon this year. Ford had a great run in the Sugar Bowl too.

There is another high school All American game tonight that has several top quality players who are also considering OU.
There was also a TE playing yesterdays All American game who had committed to OU months prior.

Since the Sugar bowl OU has also revived a JR commitment from a very good DT from Jenks. OU already has 4 committed players for the 2015 class. They are all 4 star linemen.

It sure looks like OU will be upgrading its talent levels by substantial amounts.
The new coaches that were added in the past 2 years have shown they are of very high quality.

I had brief encounters Friday with OU coaches Mike Stoops, Jerry Motgomery and Bill Bedanbaugh where I congratulated them.
All 3 were grinning ear to ear as was my self and as are many other Sooner fans are even today.

Oh big deal. Recruiting is way overrated. Get "football" players who know the game and want to do what it takes to win and OU will win. If they get a bunch of selfish track stars who care nothing other than going to the nfl, well you know......

Recruiting is not overrated just as long as player evaluations are done well.
Part of recruiting is about getting the right people and not bringing in trouble makers to your program.

Agreed. By all accounts, he's the best RB recruit since Jermie Calhoun.

I hope Mixon doesn't transfer to Angelo State like Jermie Calhoun did. Goes to show that a few grains of salt need to be liberally taken when speaking of storied high schoolers going to D1.

I should have said "recruiting 5star players" is overrated.

I would agree with you on that.
A 5 star player (or what ever the star is) still needs to be the right type of person putting the team first.
The right team chemistry is IMHO extremely important. In the last part of the season the OU players showed they played like a band of teammates. This should carry over into next season and even beyond.;)

Recruiting high ranking players is not overrated, bit it also is no guarantee. Look at the schools with the highest recruiting rankings and you'll see a list of most of the top programs in the nation (even if there's some self-fulfilling prophesy among recruiting service rankings). However, recruiting is not a perfect science. Development, player character and work ethic, fit, etc. all factor into player and program success. While OU, for example, has had a fair share of high ranking players not pan out and lower ranking players pan out, I'd still rather take my chance with the player that everyone agrees could be a future star. If recruiting 5 star players is overrated then OU would not have had Adrian Peterson, Gerald McCoy, etc. In the end, it's a numbers game. If a program is getting more higher ranked players then it means that program is probably getting more of the players they want. Just don't assume a kid like Mixon will be a star. He may, he may not, but he probably has a better chance than the next running back OU would have gone after if they missed out on him.

Yeah. Always said Adrien Peterson was overrated as a 5-star back

As was Trey Metoyer as a 5-star receiver.

I saw an interview with his coach and dad and they say he is good in the classroom also, which is a plus.
