Possibly, but there really is a ton of things going on downtown already at that time of the year.
Downtown OKC - Downtown in December > Downtown in December 2014 (http://www.downtownindecember.com/)

Agreed, but what a way to kick off/market all the events, shops, and activities Christmas Day through Opening Night.

Mel,
You do know that there are still a few here don't you? I think there are six. I used to eat lunch once in a while (I was about 16 then) at the Ranch House on about 33 and South Western on the East side of Western. The lady that owned that started the Del Rancho restaurants.

There is one in Mustang. Ever since I had my gallbladder out, my tummy just will not let me eat certain things. I've learned the hard way.

Mel,
I have been fortunate, other than size, I don't have any stomach problems. Of course, I have a few other minor(?) health problems, but I can eat anything I want.

I noticed one just north of NW 50th and N MacArthur. That's closer to home!

RM,
So, when did you arrive and what do you miss? I miss Henry Benedict from the home repair show, further back, the Sunday swap shop, and of course Captain Perdue in "Red Rover, Over".

Don't you mean a Holiday Parade?

I think something like this could work if brought back today with the downtown resurgence. Does anybody agree?

I thought Henry Benedict was still on the home repair show, with Gwen Faulkconer Lippert. I listened to them not too long ago... I think it's been a month or so. Jackson Kane was good, and Bob Durgin too. I miss the Sunday Classifieds with Bill Fountain.

I moved here in December of '73. Of course I remember Henry Benedict (and Gary Steerman) and Captain Perdue--not to mention Gary England and his Weather Lizard--but what I really miss is Carol Arnold who used to do the morning call-in show . . . Gwen Falconer (around noon) . . . and that Dave (Marshall?) dude who came on around 6 pm or so . . . Just about the time they re-arranged their antenna array so you could barely get reception out in Jones, America. =)

It was interactive educational radio. I called in on more than one occasion. =)
(I'm not sure why . . . But I just thought of how much I miss Mark Shannon. Even if he was never on KTOK.)

Mark Shannon was great. He was on KTOK During the evening drive, not long before he passed.

I remember when he was on KZUE 103 .... "Boogie Check".

I have a 107 mug in the trunk of my old, abandoned, Chrysler Le Baron convertible memorializing Mark Shannon's old show on some "Progressive Rock" station. Plus, a dusty cassette, homemade, of The Best of Shannon and Spinozi, New Year's Eve back in '93. =)

But we're talking Missed Nostalgia, KTOK.
Sorry to re-re-digress.

Didn't he once get threatened by a sub-culture?

Rezman,
No, there is no "Home Repair Show", they discontinued it about three months ago, maybe longer. Gwen is still on for two hours with the Garden Show. Jackson Kane was excellent. I called the Sunday Classifieds the Sunday swap shop, but I couldn't think of Bill Fountain's name. Bob Durgin was good too.

RM,
Carol Arnold was really good and had some excellent guests. Also Ed and Larry in the morning. And by the way, It's "Gary Stearman" of the Stearman aircraft family.

One man that has been left out and I think he was really good is Bob Riggins. I think when he retired, he moved back to Pennsylvania, his home. I could be wrong about that, but my tiny brain seems to remember it.

C.T. I must have my time frame mixed up, but I know it wasn't very long ago when I heard them. If it's been three months, then I caught one of the final shows. A little over a year ago I called the show to ask Henry with an A/C question. Now that you mention it, yesterday, Becky Ivins's show was on and the time the Home Repair show would have been on, so that makes sense.

I really liked Bob Riggins too. My dad used to like listening to John Dale at night.

Rezman,
It was somewhere around three months. I googled it but didn't find when the actual last show was on. I listened to the last show, but, senile as I am, I don't remember the date. John Dale? Wow, what a strange man, but I kind of liked him too.

I've heard of Bob Riggins but I don't know where.

Is he a local talent? I'm thinking he is. He may be an NPR star.

PrunePicker,
He was on KTOK for about thirty years and I think he retired to Pennsylvania where he was from.

"Yesterday the greater Oklahoma City area lost a legend in the world of AM Radio. Bob Riggins passed away, it is my understanding, from lung cancer. Bob had the smoothest, most welcoming voice I guess I've ever heard. I became a fan of his in about 1967, listening to KTOK radio 1000 throughout the work day. Back then the format was pop music - Sinatra, Mills Brothers, Vic Damone, etc. They had features from time to time, such as The Adventures of Chicken Man (syndicated nationally), but most content was local.

Bob had the morning drive program which usually include Captain Jim Purdue in Red Rover for traffic. I think they even operated an airplane for a while, so traffic jams could be observed from the air. Every day Bob poured a cup of "delicious Cain's coffee" near the microphone so that we coffee drinkers just couldn't resist getting a cup of our own.

Bob continued at KTOK long after it made the transition to talk radio and got us to work uncounted times before he hung it up. He has been missed ever since but now there is a pronounced void where that golden voice should be.".

What a great thread. One thing that I guess is gone forever is kids playing all over the neighborhood right up until the street lights came on. Nobody worried about the safety of the kids other than for skinned knees and an occasional fat lip or bloody nose. Drone of a fan in the evening, hearing the neighbors having "supper" through the open windows. You could smell supper cooking all over the neighborhood as you rode your bike home.
