I used to think that there were way too many bowl games. Then I decided that any day with any football is better than a day without football.

Agree 100%.

But it does mean that just going to bowl game is no longer any sort of accomplishment.

It used to be seen as a reward for a great season; now it just means you managed to go at least 6-6, and four of those wins could come from terribly weak non-conference opponents.

And then you see all these schools (and broadcasters) who proudly proclaim: Going to a bowl game for X years in a row for the first time in school history!!

When fully HALF the teams in FBS go bowling, that accomplishment alone is pretty meaningless.

I was picking a lot of PAC12 teams and I really don't think it's a strong conference but definitely stronger than the BIG10 and I was picking a lot of those teams to win but based solely on the "pick-em" competition. I really didn't want to pick LSU cause of Les Miles but what can ya do other than be realistic?

Feel sorry for Baylor having a historic season, landing the Fiesta and drawing UCF

Talk about a ratings disaster

That's why, in a crappy kinda way, I'm happy OU beat OSU in Bedlam, cause otherwise (even though it'd be more money for OSU and another Fiesta Bowl appearance in as few seasons) my Cowboys would have been playing in that game and I'd rather we play real competition like old Big XII rival Mizzou!

Cotton Bowl is definitely a bigger game this year over the Fiesta.

No doubt. Had the opponent in the Fiesta been like Stanford when we played in it that year, then I'd be a little torn but Cotton Bowl is a huge victory for OSU just due to the fact that its smack dab in the middle of their primary recruiting grounds and Cotton Bowl organizers know how well OSU fans travel so it's definitely a win win for both sides.

I really Mike Leach but they were up 15 late in the game and refused to run it and ended paying the price.

I know K State was favored but it was a very impressive victory anyway. It also continues to expose the Big 10. Things could certainly change but, for now, with Minnesota's loss to Syracuse they are 0 - 2 in bowl games and future Big 10 teams, Rutgers and Maryland also lost.

Two bowl games tonight with Big 12 teams.

Alamo Bowl - Texas and Oregon
Holiday Bowl - Arizona State and Texas Tech

I'd like to see the Big 12 win both of these and, in all seriousness, I would also like to see Mack Brown win his last game (probably ever as a head coach).

Pete
12-30-2013, 06:03 PM
Texas already down 0-7 and the announcers can't stop slobbering over Mack Brown being a legendary coach, yada yada.

He's not 'retiring'... He's the same age of Nick Saban who Texas would sell their souls to get in Austin.

He was fired because he's just not that good and I suspect he may get embarrassed one last time tonight.

zookeeper
12-30-2013, 06:07 PM
He's turned around every program he's been at. He's had good years and not so good years, but he's a great coach. He also had a great season at OU as offensive coordinator under Switzer in '84. Mack Brown is a great coach and a class guy. I'll never understand the pettiness of making football rivalries personal.

Pete
12-30-2013, 06:14 PM
I disagree he's a great coach and I'm far from alone. Many of the Texas fans feel the same way.

I would say you're pretty safe...

They are only 13 points ahead at half but have almost 300 yards and Texas can't stop them.

Actually Texas did a decent job of stopping Oregon. They only scored one offensive touchdown. Having an inept offense was Texas' main problem.

Mack is still the perfect person to be head coach at Texas, the problem is he missed on hiring great assistant coaches which is what a CEO type of coach has to do. Because he didn't have good assistants they missed out on recruits, brought ones in who had no business at UT and passed over others . It is a difficult job no matter the perks there, it is a fan base with a highly inflated view of themselves with many difficult donors. A HC there needs to play the politics there more than they need to coach, that is a what a friend who used to work in the athletic department told me. That is why I scoff at a lot of the names mentioned by the media, they don't have the personalities to deal with all the crap the head coach at UT has to deal with. Fans want a great coach, the big wheels want someone who will kiss their rears. Chip Kelly ran into some of that at Oregon.

So is anyone else going to the Sugar Bowl? I feel like Im the only one who is going, even though we'll probably get thumped. Cant turn down a trip to NOLA.

He's turned around every program he's been at. He's had good years and not so good years, but he's a great coach. He also had a great season at OU as offensive coordinator under Switzer in '84. Mack Brown is a great coach and a class guy. I'll never understand the pettiness of making football rivalries personal.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the Mack Brown offense in '84 the worst of the entire Switzer era?

Mack has been a very successful coach overall in the sense that he's a good CEO, but he's not generally seen as a very good evaluator or developer of talent or a good Xs and Os coach. So, it kind of depends what we mean by "good coach."

This game reminds of of when Mike Leach was at TT. Teams that didn't see them every year never knew what hit them.

This TT/ASU game has me thinking about some recent comments regarding Kingsbury.

Gil Brandt has made some pretty passionate arguments for Texas to look no further than Kliff Kingsbury for their new head coach. He makes some pretty good arguments and in response to concerns about his age, Brandt says it's a positive. Texas would have a coach for a long time. He thinks KK is one of the brightest young coaches he's ever known (and he's known a ton), wise way beyond his years. He said he was incredibly impressed with him when he was OC and QB coach at A&M and mentored Johnny Manziel.

Edit - To throw this in, Mike Leach said KK was the closest thing he's ever seen to a coach on the field. Now, to put that in perspective, it was Leach that recruited and coached Josh Heupel, who was another great coach on the field. That says a lot.

I totally agree with this assessment of Mack Brown. He did nothing but win with class at Texas and for that matter everywhere he has coached. I think just because he coached at Texas people in Oklahoma want to speak badly of him, but although he did not win as many Big 12 championships as Bob Stoops he was/is certainly in his league as a coach.

I'd put Stoops a bit ahead of Mack. Not only did he beat him head-to-head (including 4 of the biggest blow outs in series history), but won 8 conference titles to Mack's 2. The resources and recruiting base of Texas provides a nice advantage too. Mack is a good coach, but I'd put him a level below Stoops.

Reports starting to filter out that Stoops will be heading to Cleveland as the next head coach of the browns. Ian Rappaport reports that after 15 years at OU Stoops said he is ready to take on the NFL. Trending on twitter now.

ESPN St. Louis' Tony Softli reports Oklahoma's Bob Stoops may have the "inside track" on the Browns' head-coaching vacancy.
It's unclear if Softli is passing along a sourced report or pure speculation. His Twitter account can be hard to decipher. Softli dropped the nugget as Stoops' Sooners turned in a surprisingly strong Sugar Bowl performance against Alabama. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported earlier in the week that Stoops was "open" to making the leap to the NFL after 15 years at Oklahoma.
