View Full Version : Godzilla
Richard at Remax 12-10-2013, 01:08 PM As someone not a fan of reboots but a big fan of Godzilla (minus the last one), I am glad this is getting redone. I really like the director too. He did a movie called Monsters a few years ago that showed he has some talent.

I saw the trailer earlier. I really liked the more traditional looking Godzilla they portrayed, albeit a damn short glimpse.
Bryan Cranston!
Cast looks great and I love what i see from the trailer.
Hopefully this will make us forget all about the Mathew Broderick version -- one of the worst movies of all time.

Prunepicker 02-27-2014, 08:31 PM I'm a fan of Godzilla. Hey, any movie with Perry Mason in it has to be good.
I liked Son of Godzilla, too. Include Mothra and we have a bond.

I use to listen to B.O.C. sooo loud. Love this song. Could use a bit more cowbell though.

Opens Friday and has received 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is outstanding, especially for a movie of this type.
Summer movies are off to a good start... Even though it was predictable and sophomoric, I liked Neighbors more than I thought I would.
RadicalModerate 05-14-2014, 11:51 AM In order not to be Politically Incorrect, within the comfort zone of artistic criticism (or something like it), is the "correct" pronunciation, "Gawd-Zilla" or "God-Zirra"? =) (sorry . . . saw or heard something on PBS/NPR that reminded me of what our allies in Japan did before I was born.) =)
Dang. I need to get me to a Comic Book Store, posthaste.
(I almost feel a "Grudge" a-comin' on. got to nip it in the bud. doncha know. =)
kelroy55 05-14-2014, 01:05 PM I am so going to see Godzilla at the Imax.
David 05-14-2014, 01:06 PM This is very much on our list for this weekend, and looks to be a great start to the summer. It's going to be a movie a week for us for a while.

BBatesokc 05-18-2014, 08:12 AM Saw it. Pretty big disappoint I must say. It was like Godzilla itself was just a supporting actor in its own movie. Took an hour or more before things even started happening - which would have been okay if the character development with the human actors would have captured me emotionally - but sadly they didn't even come close. Won't go into any details so you can draw your own conclusions. I'd say its better than the last attempt (but that isn't saying much).
When I see these types of movies I prefer when they move along like World War Z - get to the action within the first few minutes and at least make me somewhat interested in the actors and their role/outcome.
Roger S 05-18-2014, 08:31 AM I wasn't totally disappointed but I do agree the pacing was off, the human characters didn't capture me either, and the monster teases kept causing Cloverfield flashbacks.
I also thought it was interesting that in the 1956 version that Godzilla was portrayed as something created from nuclear experiments and that 58 years later Godzilla is the protector of our nuclear capabilities.
RadicalModerate 05-18-2014, 09:34 AM Maybe the director was wanting to build dramatic tension?

Maybe..... Wasn't working for me..... There were also several little side-stories that I thought could have been left out and gotten the movie in under 2 hours as well.
I'm not a movie director so I may have no idea what I'm talking about... Then again maybe I should be a movie director. ;+)
Richard at Remax 05-18-2014, 11:23 AM I agree with everyone else, but still enjoyed it. For as little screen time the monster(s) got I would have figured the side stories would have delivered too. Way better than the 1998 piece of junk
7/10
dankrutka 05-18-2014, 01:30 PM My wife and I saw it last night. It's really not our type of movie, but the previews looked good... We both almost fell asleep. The character development seemed weak. The dramatic build up seemed to fall flat. It just didn't do it for us.
David 05-18-2014, 02:07 PM Dissenting opinion here, we saw it this morning and I thought it was fantastic.
I have not seen it yet but a quick question to those that did. How bad do they shake the camera during the film? If it's kind of bad I will have to wait for the DVD to come out.
Richard at Remax 05-18-2014, 02:48 PM I didn't notice any camera shake
Hollywood seems to have lost their steady cams and it's kept me out of theatres. I don't need the camera shaking to understand action is going on. I also don't have to be hit with a bat to know it hurts. It must be me getting older and grumpier.
Roger S 05-18-2014, 06:44 PM No camera shake that I noticed.... My Cloverfield reference was in how long it took to actually see a monster.

Cool. I tried to go see Cloverfield and didn't last very long.

We saw the movie today and really liked it. None of the actors will win an academy award, and the story was predictable, but it was a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon with the family.
ljbab728 05-18-2014, 09:21 PM The weekend box office will keep the studio happy anyway.

Back when my boy's were teenagers they grew about this fast. Do not miss that grocery bill.
kelroy55 05-19-2014, 06:10 AM I didn't get a chance to see it but thanks for the reviews and feedback. I may wait for the DVD as well.
David 05-19-2014, 07:08 AM Ehh, I wouldn't do that unless you expect to not like it, this is a movie that is worth seeing on a big screen.

Cocaine 05-19-2014, 11:29 AM I went saw it in IMAX and it was okay. Actually better than I expected it to be. Although I would've liked more Heisenburg and all the other characters sucked except him and one of the other scientist. I did like the theme of humanity being at the mercy of nature though. I would say that this movie isn't trash and I would've liked more ごじら though.
Stan Silliman 05-19-2014, 12:16 PM My daughter is heading to Honolulu in a month. I didn't have the heart to tell her a giant lizard destroyed most of the city.
I'm pretty sure most of the beaches will be cleaned up by the time she gets there. But still, it's a shame.

They confirmed a trilogy was the original plan.
I went to see it a couple days ago and actually liked it. It was a definite throw back to the original movies from the 50s. Godzilla's roar for this movie actually originated using the original track from Toho. I do agree with the some that the early part of the movie was pretty slow, but with the understanding this is part of a planned trilogy - then they are going use a good amount of time for setting the back story in the first movie.

Q. Name three things destined to increase in size
Prunepicker 06-04-2014, 11:12 PM My only concern about this movie is this. Will there be a Japanese
man who says, "HO!" in a very short and emphatic way? For me that
was a very important part of the dialog of the original. You might
think I'm kidding but I'm not.
HO!

Carnac the Magnificent answered this in 1964 and you weren't even
born. Talk about incredible.
The law of square cube ratio makes the size of the newer Godzilla silly. The original size would do fine for wiping out a city. I always liked the way his spine plates lit up before he honked out the radioactive halitosis.

I am sorry the giant fire-breathing radioactive dinosaur offends your puny man-science.
