Well, Reagan wasn't President in 89. So that would be the equivalent of Clinton or W attending an event these days. Nice, but not other-worldly.
View Full Version : OKC to host Summer Olymipcs stlokc 12-13-2013, 12:35 PM Well, Reagan wasn't President in 89. So that would be the equivalent of Clinton or W attending an event these days. Nice, but not other-worldly. shawnw 12-13-2013, 01:09 PM As with the Thunder, we have Clay to thank for the Olympics Festival. I suppose if we're ever going to get an Olympics, we need to put him back in charge of that. But let's get that NBA title before we distract him with this... Main event: 1989 Olympic Festival a turning point for Oklahoma City | News OK (http://newsok.com/main-event-1989-olympic-festival-a-turning-point-for-oklahoma-city/article/3386561) Clay Bennett: Planning for Success Of Olympic Festival '89 | News OK (http://newsok.com/clay-bennett-planning-for-success-of-olympic-festival-89/article/2238111) http://newsok.com/world-class-memories-smith-bennett-remember-olympic-festival-89/article/2322794 hoya 12-13-2013, 05:27 PM I was 11 when we had the Olympic Festival, and I really didn't understand what it was at the time. For a few years there I was 100% convinced that we had hosted the for real Olympics. shawnw 12-13-2013, 05:44 PM I was shocked to find that there was NO wikipedia page on the festivals at all, so I created one (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Olympic_Festival). Need to do more research to fill in more dates and locations, and then eventually create one for the OKC festival with links to those stories, but that's for another day... CaptDave 12-13-2013, 06:09 PM 1987 was in Raleigh-Durham, NC. Worked on medical staff and had a great time. Can't really compare the Olympic Festival to the international games as far as infrastructure and accommodation requirements. shawnw 12-13-2013, 06:20 PM Thanks. Think I have all the years filled in now. Midtowner 12-13-2013, 08:53 PM Build it and they will come, eh? Might as well.. I figure if we build Olympic venues on that whole idea, might as well go big or go home. OKVision4U 12-14-2013, 10:54 AM We can have our city ready in so many ways.... Mass transit w/ HSR for the entire metro. Our transit HSR HUB, could place our centrally located position as a position of strength vs. airport hub. Our economy will have the diversification that can help sustain a strong growth cycle for years to come. And give all of the OKC metro time to polish it's image w/ more tlc. Midtowner 12-14-2013, 11:47 AM Might as well.. I figure if we build Olympic venues on that whole idea, might as well go big or go home. You shouldn't like my post. I was clearly making light of the idiotic notion that OKC is in any shape to even think about hosting the Olympics. It's ludicrous. OKVision4U 12-14-2013, 12:42 PM Who did those people think we are.... Chicago? LA? NYC? Houston, Dallas, Paris, London, ... How did we get this event? Small Mid-Size Fly-over city (w/ an Okie accent) and they ( Olympic Committee ) selected OKC? NO WAY! We don't have the people to support ( volunteers ) this event. I'm not saying we are even close to ready, but maybe we need to give this some thought in the future? We don't have to be Chicago, to compete with others. ( that's kind of the That Team is better than us, let's just stay in the locker room and not run out on the field and play) Your right, the Sooners should just stay home, save the money and not play the Tide. Really, who do they think they are? Midtowner, ... ludicrous? ... would be to think we could have Ever pulled OK89' off.... and we did. OKVision4U 12-14-2013, 12:44 PM http://vimeo.com/35218921 ....I guess this was ludicrous. OK89' Olympic Festival. trousers 12-14-2013, 01:21 PM 5293 Richard at Remax 12-14-2013, 01:22 PM OKVision, are you selling whatever you are on? I have cash in hand Achilleslastand 12-14-2013, 01:41 PM This needs to be filed with the "are the raiders coming to okc thread". OKVision4U 12-14-2013, 01:43 PM Worthlesscook, The main thing I would offer to you is an asprin, that helps your "small minded headache". It will also help your vision, by clearing out some of that "we can't" in your eyes. OKC is not ready yet, but we are on the right path to something like this. Cocaine 12-14-2013, 05:17 PM It can happen but only if we can get our population at least quadruple. Convince a few corporations to move here maybe Conoco Philips, T-Mobile, Sinopec North America, Space X, Al Jazeera America, Penske, Dupont, etc. Then we just about $3 to $5 billion to invest in public transportation. We also need a huge boom in hotel construction and of course a Waldorf Astoria and a Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Also throw in an Olympic Otadium, a new arena, multiple aquatics center, and every other venue needed to host events for the Olympics. We would most likely end up like Athens maybe even worse it's hilarious to even suggest we could host the Olympics. Like every one else mentioned we'd be going up against cities like Toronto, Mexico City, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Mumbai, New Delhi, Johannesburg, Paris, Osaka, Rome, Dallas, Washington, San Francisco, Miami, Shenzen, Rhine-Rurh, Milan, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Manila, and other cities that blow us away. We just don't have the resources to do this. It's like NASA saying "we can go to Gilese 581 in 20 years". They don't have the resources for even if threw all the money we had at it it isn't gonna happen. The last option is for Devon, Chesapeake, Sandridge Energy, along with the state legislature and bribe the IOC. Now this would have to be done in secret we can let share holders and tax payers know when their money is being stolen. This is the most likely way for us to get the Olympics would be for us to pull a Qatar it's the only way that it'll happen. Bellaboo 12-14-2013, 11:13 PM ^^^ Are you on drugs ? Bellaboo 12-14-2013, 11:15 PM I'm going to tell all you big minded thinkers one more time....... Not in the next 1,000 years are we going to host the olympics.....It's not going to happen. You all need to vacate Fantasyland and come back to reality. Midtowner 12-15-2013, 12:29 AM Midtowner, ... ludicrous? ... would be to think we could have Ever pulled OK89' off.... and we did. We were so awesome! Like the whole Olympic torch ran through our town and we partied like it was 1990, yo! Obviously, that means we can host the Summer Olympics. ...obviously. ljbab728 12-15-2013, 12:55 AM We were so awesome! Like the whole Olympic torch ran through our town and we partied like it was 1990, yo! Obviously, that means we can host the Summer Olympics. ...obviously. Don't forget the fact that we can light fireworks, Midtowner. That's a very important requirement. Cocaine 12-15-2013, 02:40 AM ^^^ Are you on drugs ? No I just think the only way OKC can get the Olympics is by bribing the IOC. trousers 12-15-2013, 07:54 AM No I just think the only way OKC can get the Olympics is by bribing the IOC. Everyone bribes the IOC. I just don't think we are even at the level of consideration that the bribes would matter. |
