I am relatively new to OKCTalk but have been an active member of the message board at my favorite movie site Joblo.com for several years, so I thought I'd throw out this idea for a thread that we have over there.

List your top ten films of the year so far and edit whenever you need to update the list. You can also post your bottom ten of the year. Here's mine.

All the movies I've seen recently are primarily animated or involve animals. Can you tell I have kids?!!

Good ones....
The Incredibles
Star Wars III (won't allow the kiddos to see until they are teens)

Bad ones.....
Racing Stripes

Obviously I don't get out much!!!!

Madagascar was really cute, saw that at Northpark on May yesterday - very funny.. even for the adults.

I'm seeing Dark Waters today maybe if I don't chicken out... it 's at the dollar movies in North Park.

Here is the website for the movie times:

Without a Paddle was really funny

Worst Movies:

Cursed

(the worst movie I have ever seen - even taking over
Freddy Got Fingered's spot as worst movie)

I have to admit I am not that impressed with what is coming out of hollywood these days. On average I will see maybe one movie a year in a theater and maybe watch two or three on DVD.

It will probably be a long time before I step into a theater again. The last movie I saw was interrupted by people talking, cell phones ringing, kids playing in the aisles and every other interruption imaginable.

The only way I will go a theater again is if I'm on a date and she requests to see a particular movie.

These days I just wait until a movie comes out on DVD.

jbrown84
09-05-2005, 12:39 AM
You are not alone. Most people feel the same as you, especially regarding going to the theatre. And that is why there has been such a downturn in ticket sales of late.

Karried
09-05-2005, 09:59 AM
Yeah, most people would agree - I usually will wait for the DVD unless I want to see something right away. But it was interesting the other night, we saw 40 Year Old Virgin. We had to buy tickets 40 minutes in advance and even so, the theatre was completely packed with people without even one seat open.

I don't mind the dollar movies - I don't feel so ripped off if the movie stinks.

My ulterior motive is the popcorn :Smiley171

JBrown84,

Capote, Capote, Capote! Nowhere on your list??? Have you seen it???????
Philip Seymour Hoffman's performance as Truman Capote is the only real slam-dunk everyone can agree on for an Oscar. They're arguing the second best!

You seem to be a fan of action films, for sure. BTW, I agree with you on The Interpreter, it was a great film and very sad that it was a box office bomb. Well worth renting for those of you who haven't seen it.

It was such a weird year for movies, especially with all the remakes. Two films are Oscar-worthy but are "out of sight, out of mind": Cinderella Man (another GREAT movie, but a box office flop) and Crash (JBrown's fave). Both released way too early in the year. Crash should have been a November release. May was too early for a film with Oscar written all over it.

I love movies and I especially love movies on the big screen. Great movies are made to be seen on giant screens with awesome sound - not on a small box. Though going by my DVD budget (too much) I must like them on the small box too. :) But really, for me, nothing compares to a night out for a nice dinner and then a great movie seen with an audience.

jbrown84
12-20-2005, 03:04 AM
I haven't seen Capote. I missed it, but will try to catch it on DVD as soon as it's out.

I suppose I do like action films, but only smart ones like The Island, Blade Runner, Minority Report, etc. You won't find anything like Armageddon or Die Hard among my favorite films.

But take note I also have quite a few smaller dramas and indies like Heights, Crash, Prime, and Rent.

jbrown84, here is what you should ask Santa for - a movie card at AMC! I got one for $100 from a client that I sold some property for... I thought I died and gone to heaven... I was able to go to the movies forever without paying .. it was great. Here's a tip for Quail Springs Mall - refills on popcorn and soda with the purchase of a Large size .. ( You have to ask before you buy - they don't advertise it).

Exorcism of Emily Rose, I guess it really was okay but I went into expecting to be scared to death and I wasn't at all ... I think I was expecting more of a really suspensful scary movie and it felt more like an investigative report.. maybe I should revise my score because it wasn't horrible - just not what I was expecting. I normally don't like scary movies but I do appreciate a twisted thriller - I actually thought Saw was interesting but Seven gave me nightmares forever... Gothica and Stir of Echos, Sixth Sense and The Others all are scary movies that made me jump out of my seat - The Grudge had me screaming out loud the first time I saw it.
