View Full Version : Live TV Broadcast of The Sound of Music
MadMonk 12-06-2013, 10:01 AM Did anyone watch it? I saw about 60% of it due to being late coming home, making dinner, etc. It wasn't bad and I thought the singing was really good. Carrie Underwood did okay, though she seemed a little "stiff" at times. All in all, I thought it was a good show.
Jim Kyle 12-06-2013, 11:10 AM I not only watched it, but recorded it for future playback. I thought the Broadway version, as presented here, quite a bit better than the movie version, although Carrie didn't have all the bounce that Julie brought to the role. All in all, a good way to spend a snowy evening although KFOR's engineers seemed to be asleep at the switch for several commercial breaks.
adaniel 12-06-2013, 12:15 PM Awesome singing...terrible acting. I'll give Carrie Underwood an A for effort as this is her first role in something like this. Not to mention it was live.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, I was also a bit put off by the over-the-top Nazi paraphernalia.

I saw over half of it. I was surprised that Carrie Underwood could act at all so I'll give her an A for effort, with a smiley face and maybe a picture of a heart drawn next to it.
Can you imagine how over-the-top the Nazi paraphernalia would have been had Mel Brooks been involved in the production? =)
Lord Helmet 12-06-2013, 02:57 PM I was really surprised at how many idiots on twitter didn't realize that they were performing live, and doing the Broadway version rather than the film version. It's great that NBC had the balls to do something like this. I hope we see more live theater on TV. Also, I think it would be cool if they did it in front of a live audience as well...it was sort of strange to have big musical numbers end to no applause :)

Does Twitter intentionally and/or subconsciously appeal to birdbrains? Or is that just coincidence?
boscorama 12-06-2013, 09:05 PM I tuned in at the beginning just because, found myself transfixed, recorded the whole thing for later. I was amazed that it even happened. Yay Carrie Underwood!
kevinpate 12-07-2013, 03:51 AM Thought about watching it live, even started to do just that. However, we both found our minds wandering to other matters so we decided to postpone (thanks dvr.) We did watch it last night. They seemed to pull it off ok.
It did serve to remind me that while all actors are accomplished performers, not all performers are accomplished actors. Not meant as a slam. Great trade craft takes a lot of time and effort.
Dustin 12-07-2013, 06:49 AM Considering it was live and considering Carrie Underwood is NOT an actress, I think she did a fantastic job.

Yes....

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I was also a bit put off by the over-the-top Nazi paraphernalia.I've seen a few live stage productions of the play and was part of one production. They all had similar over-the-top Nazi paraphanalia. It' just a part of the story.
Bellaboo 12-07-2013, 09:44 AM Hate to be the spoiler, but I watched for about 15 minutes and went to the study and watched basketball. About and hour into it, the Mrs gave up on it too....I know, it's just us.
ctchandler 12-07-2013, 06:17 PM I wasn't able to see the stage production but have seen the Movie several times. One odd thing that really stood out in my mind was the placement of the song "My Favorite Things". In the movie the children were scared of the thunder storm and Maria was trying to sooth the children with it. On the tv version, it was played at a different point, close to the beginning if I remember correctly. Is that the way the original stage play did it? I thought it was pretty good considering the preparation time and of course the "live" factor. The plays I have seen, the actors have been doing the part for thousands of performances and perfection is expected there. Not so much with a live tv presentation.

rezman 12-07-2013, 07:33 PM I thought they did a great job and it was so much better than the usual crap that the big three have been poluting the airwaves with lately. Come to think of it, the Garth Brooks special the other night was another nice switch from the garbage.

Yes, C.T., the stage production does have different placements for some of the songs and the locations where those songs are sung.
ctchandler 12-08-2013, 02:53 PM Thank you Sir!

C. T.This is kind of odd. As I said, I've seen a few live productions and been part of one. Some have "My Favorite Things" as part of the storm and some don't. Seems random. The one I was part of had it as part of the storm so I'm partial to that way.
RadicalModerate 12-08-2013, 08:39 PM I would be willing to bet that not one single critic--amateur or professional--can sing or act as well as Carrie Underwood.
Nor even one of the real life little kids in the production.
And that is how it is supposed to be.
In all honesty, my opinion regarding live stage performances may be skewed on account of I was in the live audience for "A Hip Hop Nutcracker" [Dance Exhibition] at that Catholic Private School over there by 50th St. and Western for a production by R.A.C.E. (of OKC?) just last night.
I don't like Hip Hop. The music was loud (as it should be).
The effort and talent on the stage were flawless.
It was awesome.
Even Bishop McGuiness might have been proud.
(really nice educational facility. really nice.)

Can't say I've ever seen the play, I just feel for the poor NBC intern that had to go to Kinkos or somewhere and had to ask, "so can I have a blown up picture of a swastika, about 3 or 4 feet wide on a banner? And can I get about 30 of them?"

You don't do too many plays, do you . . .

(me neither . . . =)
EDIT: In the original there was a joke about confusing 18" with 18' regarding the model of Stonehenge

Enjoyment required suspension of disbelief.
Thank goodness The Druids weren't into Swastikas. =)
(this was before the rise of Kinko's)

Dubya61 12-09-2013, 08:55 AM I was in the pit for a community production of The Sound of Music. It was always odd to see the nuns backstage smoking and playing poker.
OKVision4U 12-09-2013, 04:06 PM OKLAHOMA is Very proud of our girl. Carrie you did great! That was Amazing. That level of performanc for hours? ...well, you are gifted. Well done.
Anyone can act & have a great performance when they are allowed to "tape & edit" their product. It takes a special talent to sing / dance / yes act too....BRAVO Ms. Underwood!
ljbab728 12-10-2013, 11:21 PM This isn't directly related to the live broadcast but the "baroness" in the movie, Eleanor Parker, has passed at the age of 91.

kwhey 12-12-2013, 07:27 AM Yeah, I thought it was awful. Carrie needs some acting lessons and a thicker skin.
