Information & Latest News
In 2010, Chesapeake Energy made a large gift towards this project and then in January of 2013, MidFirst gave another $2.5 million.
In addition to the boathouse functions, the facility will also feature a live music venue and art gallery. Total cost is estimated at $6 million.
This structure will be located between the Devon OCU Boathouse and the new Zip Line / Indoor surf facility.

I love how all the boathouse have the same type of theme to them. Can't wait to see it go up.
PhiAlpha 12-03-2013, 12:45 PM Finally! Great news!
This whole are is getting ready to explode!
The music venue will provide a reason to go there in the evenings as well.
Bellaboo 12-03-2013, 12:49 PM I imagine they can pretty well get this built by next fall.

Are they still adding the surfing facility as part of the Sandridge Pavillion?
PhiAlpha 12-03-2013, 01:05 PM ^
Yes.
Good deal, hadn't heard much about it for awhile. I guess if OKC can't be near the mountains or the ocean...we might as well create both here. With the Whitewater Course, Mountain Biking Course, The River, Rock Town, and the indoor surfing facility, we're make a hell of an attempt at it. All we need now is a Dubai style indoor skiing facility and we will have covered almost all of our bases.

So the boathouse begins with the groundbreaking this month and the White Water facility starts in March.
Lots of concurrent construction going on in the district in 2014.
I went to the Regatta Festival when I was in town in October and that area is really cool at night, with everything lit up and the skyline in the background.
I said this a long time ago but when Boathouse Row is largely finished and all the structures lit up at night in the foreground with the skyline behind, this will be the signature view of Oklahoma City that will set us apart from everywhere else.
Bellaboo 12-03-2013, 01:34 PM ^^^ Totally agree.
HangryHippo 12-03-2013, 01:48 PM What's the latest on the SandRidge pavilion?

Indoor Skiing in OKC ? ... MAPS4 ? Add that to the list. Great idea!
warreng88 12-03-2013, 02:26 PM $400 million to build Ski Dubai back in 2005. That is the same as the projected cost of the construction of the park ($130 million), Streetcar ($130 million), River improvements ($60 million), Fairground improvements ($60 million) and two of the wellness centers ($10 million each) combined.
Zuplar 12-03-2013, 02:34 PM I kind of wish they'd drop the Chesapeake name. I get that they donated money, but why not just commemorate inside with a dedication plaque. As an Alum, I'd rather it just be known simply as Central's Boathouse.

Would it be expensive? Sure. Awesome? Definitely. The end of MAPS? Probably. I was just suggesting it as wishful thinking, but it would be really cool.
Bellaboo 12-03-2013, 03:52 PM Lets just get a small lift and a snow machine over at the giant ant hill at the AICM.......j/k
Plutonic Panda 12-03-2013, 04:01 PM Indoor Skiing in OKC ? ... MAPS4 ? Add that to the list. Great idea!I suggested this for the Crossroads Mall site, it wasn't very popular. I would like to see something like it though. Doesn't Atlanta have something similar to that?

I took some senior military folks down there last month for a tour, and they were blown away. Of course, I shamed them for not having already checked it out...
I'm happy to see the UCO project getting underway. I hope that the folks at OU will come through eventually as well.
I keep hearing that the OU boathouse is still on track.
They have received some large contributions and started the design process some time ago.
Don't understand the hold up but I would expect them to start sometime in 2014.
Imagine this view from a lower and more easterly angle, at night with boathouse row complete.
Will be amazing:

ThomPaine 12-03-2013, 06:32 PM Do you know anything about the "TBD boathouse" with retail and restaurant? That area would be great, but it looks like "cool" restaurant space is limited as far as riverfront or close to the waterway underpass is concerned.

In the most recent plans, it is going to be the building that supports the Whitewater activity
This is the most recent rendering I have seen, the edge pointing to the river looked more like the Devon than the renderings for the other two

ThomPaine 12-03-2013, 07:11 PM There could be some really nice rowing/paddling/outdoors themed restaurants down there.
CaptDave 12-03-2013, 07:21 PM I am looking forward to this area's completion more than anything else in OKC. I think this will become a fantastic economic engine and incredible amenity for OKC residents.

Ha, probably true. I like the crossroads idea though...that big mountain of trash behind it is only getting bigger. You have big hill as a start and enough methane to power the heating system inside, bam.
bradh 12-03-2013, 08:11 PM My company is moving our location to Central across the river from all this, very excited that we'll be so close to all of this.
shawnw 12-03-2013, 08:50 PM What company?
bradh 12-03-2013, 08:53 PM nothing glamorous...we sell pipe

Hey oh!
Really? My company lays pipe.
Wow, Curt.
metro 12-03-2013, 10:38 PM I'd like to see an area on the south short designated for hotel development. The river in this area needs a solid, quality hotel that can support the district.
bradh 12-03-2013, 10:40 PM I believe that's planned forr the east end of the north shore development
warreng88 12-04-2013, 11:15 AM What are the chances that the train/rail area on the south side of the river could be moved and redeveloped? I know there are plans for stands for spectators, but that was about it.
HangryHippo 12-04-2013, 11:19 AM When will the SandRidge Pavilion and surf park start construction?
I believe they are still seeking funding for the last phases (surf park, climbing wall) of that project.
They have already completed the playground and the zip line will be soon finished.

Dang, we still have quite a wait to see some of this stuff actually come to fruition.
It was always meant to be a phased project; surf park is just the last phase.

You can't just up and move rail yards, lol.
bradh 12-04-2013, 02:55 PM No kidding, look to the fiasco with the bricktown canal connections
onthestrip 12-04-2013, 03:15 PM Is there any difference between this and the Devon boathouse. Love the development on the river but Im not sure I care for the monotony of Rand Elliot designed boat houses. Some variety would be nice.

It appears the setup and design will be much the same but the interior will be a lot different in that they will have the jazz lab/performance space as opposed to the event space in the Devon Boathouse. I personally like the design and the lighting of the individual boathouses will set each one apart.

I agree. I find having a unified look to be very impressive with obvious details to make each one unique.

Lot of difference between the Chesapeake boat house and Devon boat house externally too...

Very true, the surf facility will look a little different from DVN, UCO, & OU.
David 12-10-2013, 11:43 AM The groundbreaking has been delayed: UCO News: Media Advisory: CHK|Central Boathouse Groundbreaking Canceled Dec. 10, to be Rescheduled (http://broncho2.uco.edu/press/prdetail.asp?NewsID=16422)
MEDIA ADVISORY: CHK|CENTRAL BOATHOUSE GROUNDBREAKING CANCELED DEC. 10, TO BE RESCHEDULED
In the interest of safety, the University of Central Oklahoma will reschedule the groundbreaking for its CHK|Central Boathouse, originally set for 3 p.m. Dec. 10. Roads and parking lots in the Boathouse District remain icy and slick from last week’s winter storm. The rescheduled date has not yet been determined.
Snowman 12-10-2013, 12:17 PM It is so bizarre that UCO will be breaking ground before OU, they were only at 3/4ths funded when there were statements about OU's being fully funded what seems like two years ago.
musg8411 12-10-2013, 12:45 PM I thought OU was focusing on the on-campus facility first, then building on the river. And from what I have heard the river facility will likely just be boat storage anyways.
OKVision4U 12-10-2013, 12:56 PM Simple question to the Whitewater group... Is this a High Performance facility? ( ie. Olympics ready ).
Plutonic Panda 12-10-2013, 01:06 PM Simple question to the Whitewater group... Is this a High Performance facility? ( ie. Olympics ready ).A high performance facility? Are we talking like the are the pumps high performance or is the water artificially treated to give you more oxygen thus making you higher performing? What does that mean? I don't think high performance equals "olympics ready".
shawnw 12-10-2013, 01:17 PM It's a designation. The Devon Boathouse is a rowing high performance center for Olympic training.

I know Zero about whitewater competion, and I was wondering if the facility is going to be of High Performance Competition that will be at the highest level = to the Olympics? "Major League" or Triple A?
I think it looks really cool and great for OKC.

I think it looks really cool and great for OKC.Oh, well I think some venue was being touted as the world rowing and canoeing training facility for the Olympics, maybe this is it. I hope it is though. Can't wait for this baby to be open!
Snowman 12-10-2013, 02:10 PM It's a designation. The Devon Boathouse is a rowing high performance center for Olympic training.
While Devon Boathouse has the marquee gym, the Olympic training site designation applies to all the land and facilities the boathouse foundation leases and the three segments of water they access (the boathouse at Exchange & the two by Lake Overholser just are not as publicly visible or highly used).
Is this a High Performance facility? ( ie. Olympics ready ).
The harder of the two paths is at a level that Olympic training or competitive events should be doable, I have no doubt USA Canoe/Kayak will hold some national events. Not sure of the chances of ever hosting one of the ICF World Cup event. Realistically we are probably never submitting an Olympic bid so it will probably be light on seating for that and they would want assurances on better mass transit to the site for that kind of event.

Snowman, you have shed some light on this for me. My hope is our facilities are the best the US has to offer so we can host that level of event... ( ICF World Cup or even Olympics ) some day.
