I'll show up with bells on. I think we need to show out for OKCTalk! I wanna see the pearl-clutchers wondering what the hell is going on! soonerguru 04-09-2014, 12:01 AM Dibs on the band name "Perpendicular Cultural Paradigms", PCP for short of course... I believe it is April 23rd. If so, I will most certainly be there as that is a "free day" for me. soonerguru 04-09-2014, 12:03 AM I believe it is April 23rd. If so, I will most certainly be there as that is a "free day" for me. I'll do what I can to make it a "free day" for me. We should have an online teach-in first, so we're all well versed on city codes, etc. It would be nice if we could use the chat function that Venture has, so we know how to present. I'm guessing the pearl clutchers know how to pull the strings. Urbanized 04-09-2014, 07:25 AM Wut? Who cares? Me. No problem; I'll write a letter. betts 04-09-2014, 07:44 AM It might be the same two ladies who vigorously protested the streetcar having a presence on 13th St. They were at multiple meetings worrying that people riding the streetcar would park in HH and were quite vocal. Interestingly, neither one actually lives there. One inherited property in HH and the other owns a business on 13th. I don't think they were the reason the streetcar is no longer planned for 13th St., but they might be part of the reason. They were very squeaky wheels. Pete 04-09-2014, 09:18 AM 244 petition signatures and counting! BrettM2 04-09-2014, 09:33 AM I explained in my e-mail that these are the types of developments that draw me from Texas to spend my money. I did the same thing. Having lived in OKC for so long and going to OCU for 4 years, I really want this area to take off. Far different than it was when I started at OCU 12 years ago. It's pretty amazing. Pete, your site rocks! Pete 04-10-2014, 11:55 AM Yeah, almost 600 signatures. I've said it many times by we have more the 10X the lurkers than even registered members; and of those registered only a very small fraction actually posts. We have almost a million page views a month now. I know the site isn't read by everyone but I also think most don't fully appreciate the reach. Which why it's important to be nice! :) soonerguru 04-10-2014, 12:48 PM About to break the 600 threshold. Great job! musg8411 04-10-2014, 01:53 PM It has been interesting to see the conversations from 2 homeowners that are against the development of 23rd on nextdoor.com. I guess everyone is entitled to an opinion. It has demonstrated that a couple squeaky wheels have gotten a lot of traction, but it is also great to see people coming out and fighting back. shawnw 04-10-2014, 03:17 PM Not to burst any bubbles, but I've seen the survey link posted on every major social media site, so while I'm certain a good chunk of traffic came from this site, there are likely other major sources... Yes it has, but I've also been happy to see so many people speaking out in support of it... Didn't take much, those for it just got a positive post out before the negative Nancies could post any kind of protest. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk soonerguru 04-10-2014, 03:47 PM 619 now! No checkbox, actually, just the fine print under the big red "Sign the petition" button: Note: By signing, you agree to receive email messages from MoveOn.org Civic Action and MoveOn.org Political Action. You may unsubscribe at any time. I anticipate unsubscribing fairly soon. Pete 04-11-2014, 04:37 PM I am creating a PDF and sending to the appropriate party at the planning commission today, in advance of the two meetings coming up later in the month. We are at over 700 signatures and I want to make sure the petition is received in plenty of time to be included with the agendas. Do they actually get the names, email addresses and addresses of everyone? That seems like it would be more effective then just names if that's possible. Pete 04-11-2014, 04:53 PM It includes names, comments (if any), city and zip code. soonerguru 04-11-2014, 08:37 PM Prepare for a pearl- clutching outbreak at the hearing. Pete 04-11-2014, 08:40 PM It's hard for the Mesta Park people because they don't want to be put in the position of opposing neighbors then having to live with them. soonerguru 04-11-2014, 08:54 PM How many of these NIMBYs are there? I understand wanting neighborhood harmony but these people are wrong and if people don't stand up to them they are going to undermine the 23rd Street renaissance. The response against them has been overwhelming so far. Mel 04-11-2014, 09:17 PM This thread title sounds like some kind of vaccine that the starship Enterprise has to get to a distant whatever colony and the Ferangi try and steal it. PhiAlpha 04-13-2014, 02:28 PM So the petition is at 811 signatures now. I looked back through the list and noticed that signature number 738 is none other than Marty Dillon, owner of the tower theater... Maybe we should start a petition for Dillon to sell or develop the Tower  Rover 04-13-2014, 03:36 PM How many of these NIMBYs are there? I understand wanting neighborhood harmony but these people are wrong and if people don't stand up to them they are going to undermine the 23rd Street renaissance. The response against them has been overwhelming so far. Aren't that many. Remember, the last 23 rd st issue was derailed by a fellow 23rd buisness persons, not Mesta nimbys soonerguru 04-14-2014, 01:38 AM Still stunned that these folks are OK with the status quo. Plasma Center, Church's Chicken, boarded up apartments, empty, weed-laden lots. Abandoned retail shops. Why do they think their precious nabe is bordering Park Avenue? Spartan 04-14-2014, 09:11 PM It's hard to believe that they will win. How is it that bad development can't be stopped, but good development can be. soonerguru 04-14-2014, 09:33 PM It's hard to believe that they will win. What does Meg Salyer have to do with this? Pete 04-24-2014, 09:39 AM BTW, Guyutes and Daebak K were both unanimously approved by the Urban Design Committee yesterday. Today, there is the Planning Commission meeting where they will consider the ABC permit for Guyutes. Daebak K already has their liquor license, so they will be good to go. Pete 04-24-2014, 10:19 AM Just confirmed that Daebak K hopes to file their building permits soon (approval is just a formality at this point) and be open near the end of the year. Can't wait to not only see the beautiful building but have another great addition to the emerging OKC culinary scene. boitoirich 04-24-2014, 01:45 PM Way to go, OKCTalk! What a great addition to the Uptown scene. Mastermind 04-25-2014, 09:19 AM Been following this thread and Guyetes since last week. It really is freaking awesome to see support (and fruition!) for something like this. I'm sure you guys want OKC to become a more modern and "real" city far more than someone like me. Hope Daebak will be successful and usher in some more Korean restaurants :D DoctorTaco 04-25-2014, 10:10 AM The sobering thing about this is that the only difference between Daebak K getting their approvals and Guyutes not getting theirs is that a few (and i mean very few) neighbors of Guyutes made more noise than the neighbors of Daebak K. We're talking about less than 5 people tipping this thing one way or the other. soonerguru 04-25-2014, 10:19 AM Ridiculous. The Guyutes people should sue. Urbanized 04-25-2014, 11:35 AM I agree about more Korean. I had never had much experience with Korean food until a couple of years ago (and still not enough!). I knew that it was supposed to be excellent, but owing to the smallish Korean population here I just don't think much has had a chance to take root. I have enjoyed plenty of Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese and "Chinese" over the years, and love the Asian take on food, but they are all so different in their own right. A couple of years ago a couple that we worked with (he was ex-military and she was from Korea) made our office a lunch that was absolutely incredible. I had been talking to them about my curiosity regarding Korean food, and they decided to show was better than to tell. From that day on I have really been hoping for a great Korean place to emerge here. Roger S 04-25-2014, 11:49 AM I agree about more Korean. From that day on I have really been hoping for a great Korean place to emerge here. I'm pretty excited about Daebak but Oklahoma City, or probably should say the OKC Metro area, has plenty of good Korean options already..... B-Won, Seoul Garden, Jeon-Ju, Kim's Kitchen, Dong-a, Fusion and that's not all of them.... Granted none of those are in Oklahoma City limits but Del City, Midwest City, and Moore are all in the metro area and all serve up tasty food. Urbanized 04-25-2014, 11:59 AM Yeah, that's what our friend said. Also there is supposed to be at least one decent place in Lawton. I think where there is not a big existing Korean population - Oklahoma, for instance - Korean restaurants tend to group around military bases, as many members of the military have experienced that food in its native environment and crave it. Also I think you see situations where Korean people have located to those cities due to marriage to a service member, etc. We never experienced a large migration from Korea in Oklahoma City like we did from Vietnam and SE Asian countries, and of course Chinese people have been in OKC and throughout the country for more than a century. I'll tell you another ethnic food type I would like to see emerge here: Malaysian. I have a friend from there who likes to host parties where she mixes American and Malaysian cuisine, and my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Very different than anything else I have experienced. Roger S 04-25-2014, 02:15 PM ..... I'll tell you another ethnic food type I would like to see emerge here: Malaysian. Very different than anything else I have experienced. Banana Island was as close as we had to Malaysian. Unfortunately a location, and ownership, change has seen it go downhill. Pete 10-28-2014, 12:51 PM Daebek K is still moving forward; they should be submitting their building permits soon and hope to start work right after the first of the year. They wanted to get Covell Park in Edmond open (sister restaurant to Guernsey Park) first. I'm really excited about this project, both the food and the design. Roger S 10-28-2014, 01:04 PM I was starting to wonder about this.... Drive by that lot 3-4 times a week and think to myself "Some Korean BBQ sure would be good.". Dustin 03-20-2015, 08:33 PM This is one restaurant I am really excited to try when it opens. If it ever opens... Any updates? Pete 03-20-2015, 08:48 PM They have been busy opening Covell Park in Edmond but was told just a couple of weeks ago they will soon turn their focus to this project. Colbafone 08-22-2015, 05:13 PM Any word on this? Covell Park has been open log enough now. Pretty similar looking to Guyutes, and seeing how well that place has done this weekend, I would imagine this would have much the same effect. Dustin 08-22-2015, 05:45 PM I have a feeling this place will be a huge hit once it opens. If you've never had Korean BBQ before, here's a little look into what it's like... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOmlsWxCmdk jbkrems 08-22-2015, 11:35 PM Covell Park just under-went a menu change and is now closed for lunch indefinitely. It appears they do not have their act together in the Edmond location, so this project might be on hold? Richard at Remax 08-23-2015, 11:35 PM Not surprising about covell park. You wouldn't even think it was a restaurant driving by it. Which makes sense because it was never full. While it was good, it just wasn't the same as Guernsey park (sp?). Now the carrot cake dessert was legit. I'd prob only just get that if I had to go back. pickles 08-24-2015, 07:31 AM Not surprising about covell park. It says 2014 or early 2015? Any updates would be appreciated! |
