Prunepicker 11-23-2013, 09:54 PM Saw this place mentioned on another thread and didn't think mentioned here but tacoville over where Newcastle road splits from sw 29th street. Are you saying that Tacoville is at the intersection? Is it good? Tritone 11-24-2013, 08:40 AM Tacoville. I'd heard this place had good hot dogs so I gave it a shot. They were good and the place was crowded. The door was propped open and people were in and out in a steady stream. A couple dogs wandered in (it was raining) but they were ushered out quickly. It's definitely a hole in the wall but I'd recommend it. Jeepnokc 11-24-2013, 10:16 AM Are you saying that Tacoville is at the intersection? Is it good? I thought I posted this yesterday but isn't showing up. It is in the strip shopping center on the south side just immediately west of where 29th splits off. It has been around since the sixties. During lunch, you will dee attorneys and businessmen from downtown making the trek as well as locals and city workers, etc. One wall is lined with beer coolers if you need a twelve pack to go. Inexpensive Mexican with homemade hot sauce that they also sell.they close at 7 and are also closed Sunday and Monday. IanMcDermid 12-04-2013, 06:57 AM Neighborhood Lounge on 4th near downtown. Pete, terrifying. But I commend you sir. I usually only have the cojones to patron the western bars (antique lady[now the spot] Vic-tims, or neighborhood bar) on Saturdays between 12-4. Before the people who were there the night before wake up and saunter back for more. wsucougz 12-04-2013, 08:35 PM ALMOST as good as Eischen's? I guess they didn't set the bar too high then. They should have instead shot for KFC, Church's, Popeyes, or some random grocery store deli case, and then they could have been BETTER than Eischen's. I'm sorry, Eischen's is ONLY about the road trip. It has a good chicken rep because nobody wants to admit that they drove that far for mediocre food. You've been warned. soonerguru 12-04-2013, 09:06 PM You've been warned. I've missed your posts. Where ya been? wsucougz 12-04-2013, 09:43 PM I've missed your posts. Where ya been? Thank you good sir (ma'am?). Left town but I keep my ear to the ground. bandnerd 12-05-2013, 11:09 PM My Mom is from the south and we always, without fail, had rice and gravy for our side. The south grows rice and NOT potatoes. It also grows cotton but it's not very good with gravy and I don't care who makes the gravy. This has got to be a "vast Yankee conspiracy." Rice rules... Potatoes drool. See, I'm the only person in my circle that I know is a fan of rice. Not a casserole of rice, but just rice. With gravy. My mom never made it, but I've made it for me plenty of times when it was just my mouth that needed dinner. But, I still love me some potatoes. Irish heritage. Have to represent, yo. But I love me some rice. Bigrayok 12-05-2013, 11:39 PM [QUOTE=bandnerd;714901]See, I'm the only person in my circle that I know is a fan of rice. Not a casserole of rice, but just rice. With gravy. My mom never made it, but I've made it for me plenty of times when it was just my mouth that needed dinner. I love rice also. One of the best meals I have ever had was at Roscoe's Chicken n Waffles in Los Angeles of baked chicken over rice and gravy with a waffle. Yum! There's still regulars that will give you a play-by-play re-enactment of the murder. It closed for a bit and is now Margarita Island. It's an odd mix of biker bar/karaoke/outdoor volleyball court. The current owner has sunk some substantial coin into the place and runs a good operation. I have no idea what Martha's Tavern was in the 70's, but now it's a family-run beer joint. Fairly active in the dart leagues. The place is very small, but the beer is cheap (no liquor). The 'mega dive' in that area is a place called Castle. It's a few blocks south of 10th on Council. It's basically a double wide trailer disguised as a bar. I drive by it almost everyday and have noticed the parking lot getting more packed. I'll check it out and report back. soonerguru 12-06-2013, 02:01 AM Anyone ever checked out The Anchor? It's on Portland just south of 23rd. Drive by it frequently, but it has a foreboding exterior appearance. bradh 12-06-2013, 08:05 AM Anyone ever checked out The Anchor? It's on Portland just south of 23rd. Yep. I've never dropped anchor there. trousers 12-06-2013, 11:19 AM Never had any issues with Richards except for the rather interesting mildew smell about it. Prunepicker 12-06-2013, 11:31 AM Martha's is east of Council and Lamplighter is/was west of Council. In my hippie daze the Lamplighter was an uppity joint. Blue jeans weren't allowed. We'd go to the Jail or Jail West until the cops came. soonerguru 12-06-2013, 12:21 PM In my hippie daze the Lamplighter was an uppity joint. Blue jeans weren't allowed. Bigrayok 12-06-2013, 04:46 PM I do not know if anyone has mentioned this but the Lamplighter is now Margareta Island. I have never been in there but when I drive buy it appears to be getting quite a bit of business these days. Bigray in Ok Prunepicker 12-06-2013, 08:08 PM What kind of fancy joints did they smoke there? Why they were mountain grown joints from Oaxaca. It's the richest kind. Prunepicker 12-06-2013, 08:12 PM I do not know if anyone has mentioned this but the Lamplighter is now Margareta Island... I find it interesting how small the places are. Back in the daze I thought the Lamplighter was huge. Seems that everyone wanted to hangout in the balcony. Prunepicker 12-06-2013, 08:15 PM Is the HiLo still open? I remember the fountain in the entry way. The bar emitted colored lights from the translucent glass inlays. The bandstand could almost hold a trio. LOL Too cool. Urbanized 12-07-2013, 08:16 AM Still open. Regularly packed. Jeepnokc 05-25-2017, 09:05 AM Had late lunch at Tacoville yesterday. Went about 115 pm and the place was still packed. Amazing after 49 years of being in business that this little hole in the wall still packs them in. Went with a friend who has been a southsider for 25 years and had never been to Tacoville. He is a fan now. It is incredible to see the mixture of customers from downtown suits to blue collar to college kids that go to this little dive. If you haven't been there (3502 Newcastle Rd, OKC), give it a try. We had two Sanchos, two tacos, guacamole, taco burger and a chalupa and bill was $18 and change. They make their own hot sauce and is a must have on any item. Any other tacoville fans out there? Pete 05-25-2017, 09:06 AM ^ Thanks for the reminder as I really have been meaning to try it. Martin 05-25-2017, 09:31 AM i have known about this place for over 20 years and have never been... i've always imagined it was similar to los tacos, another southside joint that was once a hole-in-the-wall... before moving into a strip shopping center. Roger S 05-25-2017, 11:53 AM Man I loved that hole in the wall location of Los Tacos!! when I worked in banking on the southside I went there several times a week. Was just talking about it last night at pool league. How they would ask what vehicle you were in and wave at you when your order was ready.... And yep I usually went there a couple of times a week and got a sancho and a butterscotch shake. Bullbear 05-25-2017, 12:06 PM Combo burrito in those yellow Tortillas.. and the butterscotch shake was great as well. lots of times we would call it in for the office to make it go a bit faster as that place was so busy around lunch Roger S 05-25-2017, 12:16 PM Combo burrito in those yellow Tortillas.. and the butterscotch shake was great as well. lots of times we would call it in for the office to make it go a bit faster as that place was so busy around lunch Yep. Yep.... Wasn't uncommon for someone to come around taking Los Tacos orders before they headed over there. Always wondered where they got those yellow tortillas because I don't think I've ever seen them used anywhere else.
