They did this last year in the Myriad Gardens but with that space now actually being prepped for a restaurant, the location has moved to 9th street just east of St. Anthony on land owned by the Midtown Renaissance group (this is the lot directly south of Saturn Grill):

The village will consist of a series of geodesic domes, one for each shop. With their new location, the Shops will add features for shoppers including a Christmas tree lot... will open Nov. 29 through Dec. 22

They have quite a lineup, with the stores changing every week:

That's cool. The geodesic design evokes a 'Christmas tree decoration / snowball / igloo' type of feel. Quite appropriate to the season.

Not to mention that OKC has a certain well known geodesic dome that is being given new life right now. Nice tie in.

The indication previously was that the pop-up shops were moved from the Myriad Gardens to Midtown, however, last night I saw several clear structures (not domes though) on the grand lawn at the MBG, with the grand lawn itself taped off and also a sign denoted the shops being there starting 21 November. So is it safe to say that pop-up shops this year will occur in both places and not in one or the other?

Yeah, it seems whatever group organized the Holiday Pop-up Shops moved them to Midtown and now there is something called Winter Shops in the Myriad Gardens:

The Myriad Gardens posted two job openings on Twitter today and one was for Events Coordinator and the other was a project manager or something like that. I wonder if all is not well at the Myriad Gardens and that's why things are moving around. This is the second time the events coord. position has been posted within roughly a year I think.

I heard some scuttle-butt about the Gardens leasing out the restaurant space, but then lifting the idea for the pop-up shops and doing their own marketing. It's not the only area in which I've heard grumbling about the way the Gardens are being operated. Not good Downtown neighbors, so-to-speak.

This is what I have heard as well. When the Gardens saw how successful the shops were last year, they decided to ditch their original operator (the person doing the shops in Midtown) do it themselves.

Urbanized
11-18-2013, 04:40 PM
The person doing the shops in Midtown is Allison Bailey, one of the organizers of Better Block and probably the individual most connected to locally-owned retailers in OKC over the past few years. She has been heavily involved in the marketing and event planning for operators in places like Plaza District, 9th Street, Automobile Alley, etc. She's a very respected retail consultant. She is the one who organized the shops last year in the empty restaurant space in the gardens, an overwhelming success by all accounts. And yeah, there has been some behind-the-scenes, but I think the more the merrier. Let's bring holiday shopping back downtown where it belongs.

Pete

Hopefully there is room for both these operations, especially now that Midtown is coming into it's own.

BTW, I am VERY impressed with Downtown in December; in fact I'm impressed with all the great events coordinated by Downtown OKC Inc.

When we lived in Stuttgart, the Weinachtsmarkt (Christmas market, more or less) was the BEST part of living there. We'd take the train downtown, shop in the big square, stroll all of the walking streets, drink gluhwein ... it was awesome (ahd the thing I miss most about Stuttgart). The crowds would eventually do me in, but it was always worth it to walk around drinking gluhwein while huge wet snowflakes were falling. I go to these pop-up shops to get that memory back. Sure, it's not quite the same, but it triggers the memory well.

It's not quite the same ... yet!

Actually though, I'm sure they're drawing inspiration from several sources. Especially Europe, as other have mentioned. Winter markets are particulary big in the Teutonic regions -- Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Alsace.

Excellent! I hope to do the majority of my holiday shopping between both pop-up locations and and the Nov 30 - Dec 1 Deluxe Market.

BTW, it warms my heart to see the little store I started and operated for six years (Oklahoma's Red Dirt Emporium - and it's more fair to say "slaved at and fretted over" LOL) jumping into the fray (MBG Winter Shops). I always wanted to participate in more things like that outside of the store, but rarely had the time or resources. The new operators are doing such a great job with that place.

Nice Urbanized, I pay you special thanks and recognition for Red Dirt and the water taxis. I wasn't aware you started the store and operate, but very much appreciate your wonderful contribution to downtown OKC.

So good to have people like you and many other forum members so passionate about OKC and Delivering on its potential. This is what I love MOST about OKC's renaissance, it is nearly all organic and real folks taking a chance.

I wish both shoppes and other retailers downtown only the best. I'd love to come down to OKC to shop (and eat) to give you all some Seattle dollars but we have a newborn who is approaching six months now so we won't be traveling this year. next year for sure though, and hopefully everything gets worked out with the amenities prior to our tourism visits.

Yes indeed. Bricktown Water Taxi and also the Safari Voyage at the Zoo. The owner of the company (who was my partner in the store) has also been busy with his son opening a bar and a live music venue. I've assisted with those where I could, but I'm not directly involved in either.

We found some great operators (both more experienced retailers than we are) to pass the store baton to. They took over almost a year ago just as we relocated to street level with both canal and Flaming Lips Alley frontage. They have been doing a fantastic job of taking what I unashamedly believe was a good idea and needed concept for Bricktown and turning it into something even more special. I'm just proud to see a brand I put so much blood sweat and tears into (literally on all counts) continue to survive and even thrive.

And thanks for your kind words too HOT ROD. Hope to see you able to get back for a visit sooner rather than later.

I have no doubt you're correct about that Pete.

Does anyone know what kind of utility hookups they have? Do they have electricity and phone lines and can they be heated or air conditioned?

Urbanized
11-28-2013, 07:36 AM
They do have electricity. The heat is provided by space heaters, oil-filled radiators, etc. apparently there is some sort of provision made for A/C, but if so it is not installed on them currently (surely not needed). I will say that if they were used in spring/summer there would need to be some way to cool them, because the glass used in the walls extends to the roof. Literally every square inch is glass (probably Plexi or something; I didn't check).

I went to both sets of shops on Saturday. The Midtown location was more to my taste, but there is definitely room for both. Midtown skewed much higher end. Myriad Gardens was mostly T-shirts and a few cheap gift items, but with Bella Forte glass (from Edmond) mixed in. Both sets were well executed, but I walked away from both empty handed, even though I was looking for a few gifts.

I would love to see more pop up shops that aren't just a greatest hits collection of a physical store, and more items priced ~$25-$75.

The shops that were in Midtown this past weekend rotated out after last night and a an entire new slate of shops inhabits them this week. This changeover will continue every week throughout the month, so there will be a TON of variety.

Does anyone have a comparison between the Midtown and Myriad Gardens shops?

I'd also echo Mr. Cotter's comments, with a little expansion.

The Myriad Gardens was underwhelming with what they offered, and the shops were in two different areas (unlike Midtown where the domes are all together). Impressive little structures, but not much inside.

The Midtown shops had a much better feel. The merchants offered unique items, and there was even a Christmas tree lot run by Bishop John Carroll School. We went not expecting to even see a Christmas tree, but we found a terrific one that's now in our living room.

You have to go back each weekend at Midtown because the merchants rotate. Heaven help the next group because this weekend's weather will be brutal!

Hi everyone -

Just a head's up that the Dunlap Codding is hosting a "Winter Market" (with hopefully warm and temperate temps) as part of Film Row's December Premiere event. It is on Dec. 20th from 6 to 9pm.

The district is attempting to see whether a year round event is possible in the Film Row District. It will be scaled down and invariably be more inside-event driven. But we will see.

Food trucks should be around as well.

We're inviting all the makers, crafters, and general cool kids of OKC to set up shop in our indoors and outdoors and offer their wares for any of you late Christmas shoppers.

We'll be serving up food and drinks - and I believe live music will be playing.

We're keeping our fingers that Strong Tonic will be in the house and I know that the Foodie Robots crew will be using our kitchen to whip up candies and baked goods to tempt your senses. =)

Foodies Robots ---> Home | FoodieRobotsFoodieRobots (http://foodierobots.com/)

Please pass the word along to any of the crafters/makers in your world. We'd love to have them - the more the merrier! Have them drop me a note at douglas at dunlapcodding dot com.

Cheers!
