I just feel like quoting this. This was posted less than 24 hours ago. This is how volatile this storm is and can still be.

Lol. I was going to quote myself. Great job, you were right on!

Looks like this is shaping up to be a serious storm. Just looking at the radar and I see ice mix down to Wichita Falls. Heavy stuff moving into the state heading right for OKC. I can already see this is not gonna be rain in OKC unless the temps start shooting up. Afraid everything will be iced up by morning.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2089
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0332 PM CST FRI DEC 20 2013

AREAS AFFECTED...OKLAHOMA

CONCERNING...FREEZING RAIN

VALID 202132Z - 210330Z

SUMMARY...FREEZING RAIN WILL DEVELOP ACROSS SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA
OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS AND SPREAD NORTHEASTWARD ALONG THE I-44
CORRIDOR THIS EVENING. MODERATE FREEZING RAIN RATES...APPROACHING
ONE TENTH OF AN INCH PER HOUR...WILL CONTINUE WELL INTO THE
OVERNIGHT HOURS.

DISCUSSION...DEEPENING PLUME OF ASCENT/MOISTENING IS SPREADING
ACROSS THE SRN HIGH PLAINS THIS AFTERNOON. PRECIPITATION IS
INCREASING IN AREAL COVERAGE/INTENSITY WITHIN A SHARPENING WARM
CONVEYOR ACROSS FAR WEST TX INTO SRN OK. THIS BROADENING CORRIDOR
OF RAIN WILL SOON SPREAD ATOP A VERY SHALLOW COLD DOME OF POLAR AIR
CHARACTERIZED BY SFC TEMPERATURES AOB FREEZING...MAINLY NORTH OF THE
RED RIVER. WITH BOUNDARY LAYER COLD ADVECTION EXPECTED TO PERSIST
INTO THE EVENING HOURS IT APPEARS SFC READINGS WILL HOLD BELOW
FREEZING THROUGH MUCH/ALL OF THE PRECIPITATION EVENT.

LATEST MODEL GUIDANCE IS IN GENERAL AGREEMENT THAT PRECIP RATES
COULD EASILY RANGE FROM 0.05-0.10 INCH/HOUR WHICH COMBINED WITH
TEMPERATURES IN THE UPPER 20S SHOULD EASILY CONTRIBUTE TO MODERATE
ICING ON EXPOSED ELEVATED SURFACES. BY 06Z STEEPER LAPSE RATES WILL
SPREAD INTO THIS REGION ALOFT WHICH SHOULD RESULT IN HEAVIER
CONVECTIVE CORES AND POSSIBLY ELEVATED THUNDERSTORMS. SIGNIFICANT
ICING IS POSSIBLE.

It was good that earlier this week Stillwater had a contractor out trimming trees growing into power lines, like the Bradford pear trees that line part of the east edge of Boomer Lake Park. It was dumb to plant trees under power lines in the first place, assuming power lines came first. Stillwater can probably handle an ice storm, as long as it doesn't get too remarkably heavy. But neighboring little towns and rural areas likely can't, so I hope the people there are prepared for long power outages just in case.

OThers can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the high may be above freezing for Sat, but its only supposed to get that high for a very brief time before dropping back below freezing - combined with all the evaporative cooling going on, the temp either won't matter much or will allow stuff to just slightly melt before re-freezing.

If we get an inch+ of ice then there will be many people without elec. and that is just not good, esp. for the elderly. Roads will be impossible to drive on safely or at all. City shuts down. Stores close. Limbs break off caving in roofs of houses ,cars or whatever else happens to be under them. Pretty much wide spread destruction.Sounds of generators running throughout the neighborhoods and extension cords running everywhere. Not to mention MM going crazy on TV and that's if you can even watch tv.

Lets not panic.

We were gifted with two weeks worth of survival gear, for two, including MRE's. It's in our cellar along with several gallons of water, some empty coffee cans to pee in. With the wood burning stove, we will be okay in the house. We have a generator which I hope we never have to use! Electric company is CREC, who restored of service after about 21 hours in 2002. Toodles, all.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2091
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0818 PM CST FRI DEC 20 2013

AREAS AFFECTED...THE I-44 CORRIDOR IN OK/MO

CONCERNING...FREEZING RAIN

VALID 210218Z - 210815Z

SUMMARY...THE STRONGEST ASCENT AND GREATER PRECIPITATION RATES WILL
SPREAD NEWD FROM NW TX TO CENTRAL OK THROUGH 06Z...REACHING CENTRAL
MO BY 09-12Z. FREEZING RAIN RATES OF 0.10-0.20 INCHES PER HOUR ARE
EXPECTED FOR SEVERAL HOURS...WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT ICE
ACCUMULATIONS ON ELEVATED SURFACES.

DISCUSSION...FREEZING RAIN IS ONGOING ALONG THE I-44 CORRIDOR IN
OK...WHILE THE ZONE OF STRONGER ASCENT REMAINS OVER W CENTRAL/NW TX.
WAA AND FRONTOGENESIS IN THE 850-700 MB LAYER...AS WELL AS ENHANCED
DIVERGENCE ALOFT WITH A COUPLED UPPER JET STRUCTURE...WILL DEVELOP
NEWD AND RESULT IN STRENGTHENING ASCENT FROM SW TO NE ALONG THE I-44
CORRIDOR INTO CENTRAL OK THROUGH 06Z...REACHING SW AND CENTRAL MO
FROM 09-12Z. WET BULB COOLING WILL MAINTAIN A SHALLOW SUB-FREEZING
BOUNDARY LAYER /SAMPLED BY 00Z OUN AND SGF SOUNDING/ ACROSS MOST OF
OK AND THE ADJACENT RED RIVER COUNTIES OF EXTREME NW/N CENTRAL TX.
A ROUGHLY 500 M DEEP SURFACE LAYER WITH TEMPERATURES OF 28-31 F AND
A WARM NOSE OF 8-10 C NEAR 850 MB WILL FAVOR FREEZING RAIN AND
SUBSTANTIAL ICE ACCUMULATIONS AS PRECIPITATION RATES INCREASE TO
0.10-0.20 INCHES PER HOUR FOR A PERIOD OF SEVERAL HOURS. THE
GREATEST ICE ACCUMULATIONS WILL OCCUR ON ELEVATED SURFACES GIVEN
RELATIVELY WARM GROUND TEMPERATURES FROM THE PREVIOUS FEW DAYS.

Something to keep an eye on -- precip is so heavy right now that temps at the surface appear to be on a very slow climb back toward the freezing mark (due to rain falling through much warmer air). Cold air advection is pretty much over so hopefully we can warm things up another 2 or 3 degrees to near or just above freezing.

So much for Ice Armageddon. Just ran to the store this morning…… nada.

Funny how KFOR's website still has all their doom and gloom predictions that haven't been updated since 6:30 last night.

Glad it missed us, the wife was concerned because of all the tree limbs we'd probably lose in an ice event as big as they predicted.

I'm glad it's not icemageddon, but it's still something. I just watched a car spin out up the street from my house. The real danger is the tree limb that's hanging about 4 feet low...right over my cable line!

Got to love TV weather coverage. Rick Sowder on 5 keeps pointing at an area of rain straight south of the city and saying/pointing how it's moving straight north and will be here shortly. All the time he's doing so the loop clearly shows the rain moving northeast, not straight north and on a track that misses OKC.

SoonerDave
12-21-2013, 07:39 AM
While it appears the surfaces around our house are generally OK, its clear there is considerable ice affecting trees and shrubs. I think we benefitted greatly from the lack of wind to blow those ice-covered limbs around and push around power cables, etc. I also think we benefitted from several days of warm temps that kept the non-elevated surfaces at or just above freezing.

RadicalModerate
12-21-2013, 08:14 AM
Once I got the doors of the truck unfrozen and scraped enough of the 1/8"+ layer of ice off of the windshield and side windows to see enough to drive, the roads themselves weren't bad at all. Just wet.

Good 0.75 to 1 inch of accumulation here in east Norman. No wind has helped significantly with this ice storm.

More steady rain moving into Norman. Temps are at freezing right now so additional icing should be minimal.

Just traipsed outside my yard and walked through crunchy ice on the grass, and took some great ice pictures of branches and icicles hanging off the eaves (hopefully some really good pics), but the driveway, sidewalks, and streets in my area are strictly wet - not even slushy from what I can tell.

Think the surface temps were just high enough to offset the fact that we didn't get a serious temperature plunge, so it was never quite low enough to get the non-elevated surfaces glazed. Reallly dodged a bullet, methinks.

Temp in Norman has come down a fraction. Steady light rain will be ending soon. Back to the west and southwest, just some scattered showers.

N of I-44 most of the significant rain is done. Just scattered showers or drizzle will remain through the day.
