Bunty 12-05-2013, 05:25 PM After testing Stillwater streets and finding them too slick and scary from lack of traction, I decided to call off my drive to Enid tonight. I've successfully in the past have driven from Tulsa to Stillwater right after several inches of snow had fallen. And also from OKC to Stillwater through a night time whiteout so bad that I-35 had to be closed shortly after I exited. Both experiences were pretty stressful, especially the latter one. But I was younger and more foolish then. Unless you got a vehicle, like a four wheel drive that drives good in the snow, I would save yourself the stress and call off any long drives.
bandnerd 12-05-2013, 05:31 PM People were just straight up stupid out there. I work about 10 miles or so from my home. It took me over 90 minutes to get home, mostly because people were making idiotic choices. The best was the guy who cut me off. Driving west on 36th, single lane. Someone had wanted to turn left at the light, so I moved over a little for them to get by. The next guy started to do the same thing, so I did the same. The light turned red, and I was next to go. The jackass pickup used the opportunity when the light turned green to jump in front of me. I was trying to be nice and got screwed. Jerk.
Bunty 12-05-2013, 05:38 PM Downtown and the near northwest side were pretty slick around 1:30 this afternoon. Just ask the folks at Arby's who were watching me make a massive fishtail across all 4 lanes of 23rd...:o
Must have been fun. The last and only time I made a fishtail in OKC was on I-44 while headed out of town. Should have took it as a sign I needed to check into the nearest hotel room. Little did I know, I would later be entering a massive whiteout on I-35 that shut it down shortly after I exited it for Stillwater. Even though I made it fine, I sure don't want to go through such a stressful can't see much beyond the hood ordeal like that again.
OKCRT 12-05-2013, 05:41 PM People were just straight up stupid out there. I work about 10 miles or so from my home. Dang, sorry about that. I didn't mean to cut you off.;)
But there are some serious fools out there. On Hefner Pkwy this afternoon I was headed southbound and seen a car start spinning like a top on the north bound lanes. Luckily the other traffic was well behind and don't think anyone was hit. But this car is just driving along and starts spinning. Don't know what the heck was going on to cause that but it had to be driver error. Prob started to slip and over corrected. I swear some of these okies have never seen white before.
JayhawkTransplant 12-05-2013, 05:44 PM My normally 20-minute commute from Memorial Road to NW 23rd was 2 hours long tonight, due to people getting stuck going up slight inclines. It seems like people tend to give up so easily without even getting out of their cars and troubleshooting. I was able to get two cars unstuck just by tearing up a cardboard box for traction.
yukong 12-05-2013, 06:04 PM In Surrey Hills, NW Expressway and Mustang...we currently have just over 2" of snow as of 6:00 PM.

Did the same from Classen on to 13th. Some parts of my drive home were a lot slicker than I expected.
Easy180 12-05-2013, 06:20 PM 2 hours from Rockwell and Hefner to south Moore. If I had to guess the southwest side fared a little better than the northwest side

bradh 12-05-2013, 07:00 PM Dropping that 350lb manhole ring & cover in the bed of my pickup really helped
CuatrodeMayo 12-05-2013, 07:17 PM Dropping that 350lb manhole ring & cover in the bed of my pickup really helped
It probably won't do much good for the guy who finds the open manhole, lol.
OKCisOK4me 12-05-2013, 07:23 PM Working at NW 23rd & Meridian, it took me about 40 minutes to go to 122nd & MacArthur. Not too shabby. I drove anywhere from 25-30mph. Just took it slow. Only lost traction a time or two but honestly, you shouldn't have to apply the pedal when the light changes since the drive of your car should lunge you forward just as easily.
venture 12-05-2013, 07:45 PM Wave 2 is starting to get organized out in West Texas now.

OKCisOK4me 12-05-2013, 07:58 PM No bueno. Love the snow but I'm gonna have to go to work some time tomorrow. Still have one customer that has yet to pick up their tux.
CaptDave 12-05-2013, 08:53 PM First time no ice under the snow in OK for me. North OKC/West Edmond got several inches of snow and no sleet or freezing rain as a precursor.
bandnerd 12-05-2013, 09:12 PM Well, since school is canceled for tomorrow, and all-state is postponed, all I have to do tomorrow is spend quality time in the kitchen and watching LOTR:ROTK.
Bring. It. On.
yukong 12-05-2013, 09:14 PM First time no ice under the snow in OK for me. North OKC/West Edmond got several inches of snow and no sleet or freezing rain as a precursor.
Appears to be the same for us here out on NW Expressway and Sara/Mustang Roads. We have roughly 2 1/4 inches. Just a beautiful snow fall. Hope we get the top end of the predictions for the extra snow tonight/tomorrow morning. Snow makes me feel like a little kid again. It just makes me happy.
venture 12-05-2013, 09:36 PM This is roughly what we have going on right now...

venture 12-05-2013, 09:39 PM The Northern band is more classic in nature where the 2nd in nature is more so a large swath of snow moving NE. We could see the 2nd area encounter the moisture plume from the Sleet / Frz Rain area to the south and help bring snow amounts up some over a larger area - closer to the 3-6" predictions over a general area that models are predicting. The northern band very well could be the big snow maker of a very small area. We just have to watch and see which one get dominant and becomes the big snow maker.
Jon27 12-05-2013, 10:06 PM This saga with the camaro on news 9 is sad and hilarious at the same time
It's like the story of the Little Engine that Could.
kevinpate 12-05-2013, 10:11 PM First time no ice under the snow in OK for me. North OKC/West Edmond got several inches of snow and no sleet or freezing rain as a precursor.
Oh, Capt. my Capt., we have found your missing sleet/ice. We are graciously holding it in reserve for oyu in Norman. Please be so kind as to bring some snow with you when you come to collect it.
venture 12-05-2013, 11:09 PM Round two is now starting to crank up.

This is one massive storm system.
Wow. Stretching from Mexico to Canada. Don't remember the last time I saw something like that.
yukong 12-06-2013, 08:51 AM Are we still looking at a chance of more light snow Sat/Sun?
venture 12-06-2013, 09:27 AM Are we still looking at a chance of more light snow Sat/Sun?
Yes. Late Saturday night into very early Sunday might see another dusting to an inch over the area. Nothing major.
yukong 12-06-2013, 09:32 AM Good. I love this. We have between 5-6 inches here in Surrey Hills.
kelroy55 12-06-2013, 09:35 AM Lots of ice down here in DFW
5179
soonerguru 12-06-2013, 09:35 AM Between 4 and 5 inches here in NW OKC, just west of I-44.
ouamber 12-06-2013, 10:35 AM Ended up with 5 inches in my back yard in Jenks/South Tulsa!! We had some crazy band that last hour and really padded our total:) Happy, Happy, Happy!
venture 12-06-2013, 12:16 PM All headlines/advisories for Central OK have been dropped now. Roads will probably still be pretty tough for a couple days and melting will be low.
OKCisOK4me 12-06-2013, 01:00 PM On a side note... The heavily traveled roads are just wet so they'll re freeze tonight. It's funny cause Meridian is a "snow route" but it is deplorable. Are they saving it for last?
venture 12-06-2013, 01:02 PM Per the 12Z GFS...next possible winter storm coming in sometime around the 15th/16th. So far no run-to-run consistency on it yet, but today it popped up with a 3-6"+ snow accumulation over Oklahoma that weekend. Pretty quiet until then.
On a more personal note...For this event we had 500 unique visitors use the website and drop in on the chat. Thank you! If you appreciate the service, I am running a fundraiser right now to help offset some of the cost for the site operation and upgrade costs for the newer features. You can donate through either Fundly (permits anonymous donations) or PayPal, whichever you prefer. For more details checkout: Weather Spotlight - Live Weather Event Coverage (http://www.weatherspotlight.com/donate.html)
I looked out the front door and nearly got blinded. Put sunglasses on looked again and we did receive some nice snow.
FritterGirl 12-06-2013, 03:16 PM If you all aren't tired of the snowy pics yet, we took some at Martin Park and Will Rogers Gardens this morning. Enjoy!

sacolton 12-06-2013, 03:18 PM So, which model came the closest to predicting everything that happened correctly?
venture 12-06-2013, 03:37 PM Tough to really call either a winner. They messed up on the Wave 1. Wave 2 we got the heavier snow band...and amounts were pretty well in line with the later model runs. I would almost argue the models from a couple days ago did better handling of Wave 1 than the near term runs. Here is what NWS has for totals...

Dustin 12-06-2013, 04:15 PM There is easily 6+ inches of snow in my backyard. I live in the Quail Creek area.
Easy180 12-06-2013, 06:39 PM Highways are in great shape in case you weren't out today. Went 60 for the most part from Hefner Pkwy all the way through the H.E. Bailey to 4th st in Moore. Main streets are also in pretty decent shape
ou48A 12-06-2013, 07:26 PM For what it's worth David Payne CH 9 indicates that we could be looking at an even bigger storm about next Friday and Saturday...
There is a good size snow pack to our north that seems preety big for this time of year and it sounds like it will be growing …
I have seen this before... about all it takes is a north wind to keep us deep in the ice box.
Bill Robertson 12-07-2013, 10:08 AM For what it's worth David Payne CH 9 indicates that we could be looking at an even bigger storm about next Friday and Saturday...I really hope not. Yes, snow covered yards are great to look at. But I bet no one who wants more snow has to spend all day plowing, blowing, shovelling and ice-melting when they're used to being in a nice warm office! An inch is so is great. Anything more and I'm not at all Happy, Happy, Happy.

Still waiting for the 12Z GFS to come in for the rest of the week, but looking at the previous runs - I'm not sure what Payne was looking at. Nothing coming up there way for awhile, except for some fast moving systems that might bring additional light snow.
System at the end of the week has been consistently forecast to remain to the southeast of most of the state. Of course things can change, but as it stands now - nothing imminent. Sounds more like Payne was playing the "what if" card.
Anonymous. 12-07-2013, 12:57 PM Snow showers developing in north TX now. Should gain in coverage and intensity as they move into body of OK.
venture 12-07-2013, 01:00 PM Should just be some light fluffy stuff to freshen things up a bit.
venture 12-07-2013, 03:36 PM Flurries and isolated light snow showers moving through now. Nothing major from these, just enough to help put you in the mood to finish decorating. :)

I hope and pray you're right. This old body needs a long break after this round.

I hear ya...Let's try this again some time in January
Praedura 12-08-2013, 08:25 AM It's snowing in Edmond right now. Very lightly.
venture 12-08-2013, 12:27 PM Next shot of snow coming up tomorrow. NAM and GFS agree on a strip of snow somewhere from Central OK into Northern OK. Generally looking at snow north of a line from Altus - Lawton - Purcell - McAlester to the KS border. On the southern and northern edges maybe a dusting increasing as you move in towards the center. Per NAM the I-40 corridor would be looking at 2-3", per GFS it would be Northern OK seeing the higher snow band.

That is awesome. I'm loving this. Quite unusual that we have had some amount of winter precipitation every day since Thursday. If this happens tomorrow, that will be 5 days in a row we have had frozen precip. That has to be approaching some sort of record I would think.

Yeah I'm not complaining at all. It definitely looks better out there than the typical drab brown we are stuck with until March.

Just makes the Christmas season seem more alive to me.

Great... it only adds to and grows the size of snow pack....
Which will keep us colder and increases odds of even more of the frozen stuff.
kevinpate 12-08-2013, 02:31 PM Some of y'all are really, really odd.
As for myself, I'm counting my blessings that some business matters west and southwest of me resolved when they did. Some of those drives were more than long enough at dry pavement speeds.
JayhawkTransplant 12-08-2013, 04:46 PM I can't believe OKC and PC schools are out tomorrow.

Side roads and a lot of neighborhood roads are still bad. Busses could not navigate that.
blangtang 12-08-2013, 05:51 PM So are they going to cancel school the next 3-4 days because the white stuff is still present?
kevinpate 12-08-2013, 06:04 PM Side roads and a lot of neighborhood roads are still bad. Busses could not navigate that.
Same reason Norman schools are closed.
I was out for a bit this afternoon to check in on some folks who do not easily get around at the present time, even when weather is not an issue.
Main roads are in good shape. Residential roads in the areas I visited were full-on boogerbears. These roads will not be better in the am.
venture 12-08-2013, 06:19 PM I would almost wager that most cities are just waiting for natural melting to take care of residential streets.
