OKCRT 12-05-2013, 09:13 AM Moisture stream really cranking now. Echos popping up all over S OK.
MD out of E OK regarding mixed precip.
Looks like a large precip. shield is forming near Lubbock right now and this will spread north and east into OK today. Then the main low should cross the state tonight.
One thing to note right now, the main low is closed off and there is virtually no dry air that is being pulled into it. This may change, but right now it is looking very healthy. Water vapor imagery shows nice moisture aloft that is extremely cold in the -50 to -60 C range.
So what exactly does this mean for the OKC area today? Please give time of arrival and amounts:)
Charlie40 12-05-2013, 09:30 AM I interpret this as meaning the low is nicely formed and has virtually nothing to interfere with it or kill it, so that translates to a good snowmaker for Oklahoma.
ouamber 12-05-2013, 09:50 AM Very light snow/grapel coming down in Broken Arrow.

Looks like the main storm will be mainly south of OKC,correct?
LocoAko 12-05-2013, 11:37 AM Light sleet here in Norman now despite nothing much on radar. A lot of it is evaporating.
venture 12-05-2013, 11:51 AM Looks like the main storm will be mainly south of OKC,correct?
Most of the ice accumulation will be south. Good chance the heavy snow band will setup somewhere close to central OK late tonight.
venture 12-05-2013, 12:03 PM Sleet/Freezing rain will reach Downtown in the next 45-60 minutes. Light Sleet widely reported in Norman right now.
ouamber 12-05-2013, 12:06 PM LOL Grapel is a fine ice pellet:) Steady light snow/sleet/freezing rain in Broken Arrow. This is gonna get ugly fast! I really hope my work lets us go home early.

3-6" is probably still a safe bet. All depends where the various snow bands setup later.
LocoAko 12-05-2013, 01:57 PM OU-Norman closing at 2:30PM and remaining closed through tonight.
warreng88 12-05-2013, 01:59 PM Big flakes here on Britton and May.

LakeEffect 12-05-2013, 02:02 PM Drove to DT OKC from Midwest City. Roads are definitely getting slick and traffic is a slow crawl in many places. If you have to travel right now, plan on lots of extra time.
You drove!? :)

Seems an odd direction for this thread to take, given that it's awfully frigid out there.

venture 12-05-2013, 02:41 PM Going to be doing live radar and video every 10-15 minutes or so in the chat. Might have to redesign the chat page some to make it look better. :)
Dustin 12-05-2013, 02:43 PM I haven't seen a snow this pretty since I was in middle school. The flakes are huge!
s00nr1 12-05-2013, 02:48 PM Nothing but heavy sleet here on the east side of Moore. Thought I might see it transition to SN on the drive home from work in Norman but no such luck.
yukong 12-05-2013, 02:56 PM 18 degrees and heavy snow and bad roads. I-40 and Morgan.

Zero snow in north central norman. Ice pellets galore, but not a flake in sight.
jerrywall 12-05-2013, 03:56 PM Has Mike Morgan called for everyone to get in their car and try to outrun the snow storm yet?
For a while the flakes were so big it looked like cotton balls falling here in Mustang.
soonerguru 12-05-2013, 04:12 PM Has the dry slot arrived?
Dustin 12-05-2013, 04:23 PM This saga with the camaro on news 9 is sad and hilarious at the same time

Lol I was just watching the same thing... And having the same thought.
venture 12-05-2013, 04:26 PM Has the dry slot arrived?
No real dry slot. This is just the tail end of the first wave. Second wave is a few hours away still.
jn1780 12-05-2013, 04:33 PM Has Mike Morgan called for everyone to get in their car and try to outrun the snow storm yet?
No, but he says wave 2 won't be as bad. But, he also said yesterday at this same time wave 1 wasn't going to be that bad.
OKCisOK4me 12-05-2013, 04:39 PM No real dry slot. This is just the tail end of the first wave. Second wave is a few hours away still.
So chances are that the second wave of energy is going to backfill in on Southwestern Oklahoma and move back up into the city? Do you expect that timeline to still be 9pm-6am, all heavy snow, for wherever that main band sets up shop?
s00nr1 12-05-2013, 04:43 PM No, but he says wave 2 won't be as bad. But, he also said yesterday at this same time wave 1 wasn't going to be that bad.
While certainly possible due to the challenges of forecasting winter weather, I still cringed hearing him say that considering what several of the models are outputting in terms of snowfall overnight. In particular the NAM and HRRR, which project an additional 4-6" of snow between 10pm and 8am.
venture 12-05-2013, 04:44 PM Looking at the latest HRRR, Wave 2 should start moving into SW OK by 10PMish tonight...Metro by Midnight. HRRR only runs through 4AM at this point and still going strong through then. Here is the snowfall forecast through that time period...take off about an inch from these totals to account for current falling precip.

CuatrodeMayo 12-05-2013, 05:01 PM Downtown and the near northwest side were pretty slick around 1:30 this afternoon. Just ask the folks at Arby's who were watching me make a massive fishtail across all 4 lanes of 23rd...:o
