I left central OK in 05 and am tossing around the idea of returning to the big city. My brother used to call it the "sh*tty city", LOL
So when I asked my former hubby about the usual areas I grew up in and around (N. Independence and 50th, NW 42 and 45th, etc),
I was told they are all "black or mexican" and that pretty much everything inside 35 North to Council and I-40 North and south to 240 is complete crap these days.
Is this true or it is a matter of not inviting trouble and trouble won't come to you? My two sons and I pretty much stick to ourselves anyway but I know they would end up wanting to walk around and explore and I have no desire to have them come home regaling tales of getting robbed or most anything else.
SE 48th and NE 25th are two possible choices seeing how I have no desire to return to apartment living with all that entails.

I don't think your brother has any inkling as to what he's talking about. Based on his "circle" it ends up including rich neighborhoods. If I were you I would do a little self research. Use websites like zillow.com to find yourself either a rent home or a home to purchase and also use News9's CrimeTracker to cross reference the areas you're interested in.

The first thing you need to do is stop listening to your brother and ex husband.

The area you referenced, Independence and 50th, is fine. Just a simple, working class neighborhood. I would have no problem living there. I can't vouch for the other two streets you suggested because you did not give a cross-street, but unless you are living far out I would caution against NE 25th.

I would say the same thing for SE 48th as well.

Wow! Stereotyping? What's wrong with black or hispanic people? Anyways, 50th and Independence is a nice, mostly white, middle class neighborhood.

I live near that area as well around the Bush Hills neighborhood. Not only are these houses not run down but new large houses are being built here often. It is such a convenient place to live but still diverse enough to be interesting to me.

Patrick, I almost always agree with you, but I'd just point out that stereotyping is hard to do when basing it on hard, solid statistics, of which there is plenty.

What are the hard, solid statistics that you use?

I don't want to fan any flames, but if you are that bothered living by "blacks or Mexicans" you should probably not be living in OKC city proper. This city is fairly integrated and that will be an issue no matter where you go.

In any event, the fact that purpledice42 has not returned makes me think she is just trolling.

The only issues I know of around 50th and Independence come from people whose dander is for some reason raised by the presence of the Grand Mosque over on 48th east of Independence; more than once the place has been hit by vandals, who may not even live in the area.

What about nw 12th and Penn. Right around the corner from Nic's. Saw a house there I liked but drove around and didn't seem like the best part of town.

I lived right by there from 2000-2003 before moving to Austin, my sister lived in the house before I did from 1999-2000 and neither of us had any problems in the area. At that time there wasn't anything that had happened at the mosque as well. Drove by there this weekend, still looks like a solid, decent neighborhood.

It's not the best part of town, but I suspect Classen Ten-Penn will be one of the neighborhoods to see the greatest increase in real estate values in the next decade.

not real versed in Independence and the 50 blocks, but a mile or so north across the NW expressway is very nice older housing. Eldest brother has inlaws in the area. When his kiddos were little, I would sometimes drop off gifts with his IL's to pass along.
