View Full Version : Carl's Jr
SoonerDave 10-08-2013, 08:17 PM All boarded up, signs gone, no mas.
No big lament, as it never seemed to have much business, and we didn't go there that often, but it once was a pretty busy place. The location was one of those old Hardee's from the original Carl's Jr buyout or takeover or whatever it was.
Wonder if the building has sold or if its just going to turn into one of those nasty, empty buildings.......that NE corner of SW 89th and Western is just painfully ugly with that horrendous stone wall stripmall. Wish some wise investor could just buy that place up, plow it down, and put something nicer in its place...

Their website shows 10 locations in the metro area after this one closed.
Martin 10-08-2013, 09:41 PM i wonder if the location @ I-240 & penn is still open... it never seemed to do a lot of business, either. -M

Oh . . . You meant old, abandoned wise investors rather than Hardee's/Carl's Jr's . . .
(for a second there I thought . . .)

Well, I gotta say, I tried a Carl's Jr burger in Georgia this past summer and it was really good - hot, fresh lettuce/toms/etc, and the store was 1000x more appealing/cleaner than most of the ones here in OKC. I don't know who handles these OKC-area franchises, but they don't do the name any favors.
SOONER8693 10-09-2013, 11:38 AM I'm not really surprised that particular Carl's Jr closed. I like many of their burgers, and I think their fries are some of the best fast food fries. But, the people working in that location always seemed pretty sketchy to me. I often frequent the Carl's Jr on 19th street in Moore. It is newer, much cleaner, and the employees are a better cut of human.
kevinpate 10-09-2013, 11:49 AM The one in Norman isn't my #1 go to spot, but some of their offerings ain't bad at all.

"Where' drip happens."
Remember that commercial when they 1st changed over from hardees
Garin 10-09-2013, 08:38 PM I just ate there on Monday ...... It was always pretty busy
Easy180 10-09-2013, 09:15 PM Guess I based my post off two factors
I have never had anyone say "Let's go to Carls Jr" and I rarely saw any traffic at the old and new location on 19th in Moore
catch22 10-09-2013, 09:30 PM I have carls jr about once a year.
Martin 10-09-2013, 09:41 PM I have carls jr about once a year.
sounds like you have carl's jr. about once a year too often. -M
BlackmoreRulz 10-09-2013, 10:02 PM New one opened in Edmond last week or so. Still haven't been though its two blocks away. Their breakfast wasn't too bad the last time I ate there 5 years ago..

In all fairness, mmm, a good Carl's Jr puts out a pretty darned good burger. In fact, I ate at the now-closed Carl's once a couple of months ago, and while it was bereft of customers, they handed us a properly-filled order that was hot and pretty tasty. Couldn't complain. Their breakfasts were, at least the last time I tried them (which was years ago), really tasty, too.
Tavia 10-10-2013, 12:18 PM My dad frequents this location for breakfast, he was told that the building will be torn down and rebuilt as a new Carl's Jr.
Prunepicker 10-10-2013, 09:04 PM Years ago I *accidentally saw a very disgusting commercial for Carl Jr.
I vowed I'd never eat there. I'm sure I haven't missed anything.
*In 1986, during the Super Bowl, I decided that I would never, ever,
intentionally watch or listen to a commercial for the rest of my life.
So far, so good.
catch22 10-11-2013, 01:33 AM I like them but I think they are slightly overpriced plus I never really think of them when I am hungry. I would eat there more often though, but just never think of them.
MWCGuy 10-11-2013, 03:11 AM I love their breakfast menu and a few of their burgers. The problem is that I never think of them when I'm hungry because I usually opt for places that are close by when I want a burger. Sometimes it's a chain. Sometimes it's mom and pop places.
My favorite item is the ribeye steak breakfast sandwich. When they opened the one in Del City I expected the Midwest City location to close however, they got a remodel and it looks pretty nice now and the service is not bad at all.
I refuse to do business with the one on 240. They never get my order right and it takes forever to get the order.
boscorama 10-11-2013, 08:50 PM Guthrie location turned up closed several weeks ago. Not a fan, myself, but did go occasionally and the food was okay for what it was. Agree it was over priced. I mean, $8-ish for their burger combo? Not again.
Martin 10-11-2013, 08:55 PM i'm not really a carl's fan, but a new structure on that corner may help get brookwood north shopping center turned around. it's my understanding that the owners don't really care about how the place is run and unfortunately that shows in the condition of the property. -M
RadicalModerate 10-12-2013, 07:17 AM Hardees--and then Carl's Jr.--has/had some of the best biscuits around.
Perhaps their gluttonous, porcine, dripping, slob-esque ads for the burgers is having an effect opposite of the intention?
boscorama 10-12-2013, 07:36 PM Their "low carb breakfast bowl" was good for low-carb sprees.
Also, should mention the service at Guthrie store seemed fine enough.
Prunepicker 10-12-2013, 07:55 PM I've seen Hardee's in small towns. Siloam Springs comes to mind.

I never had a bad biscuit at Hardee's/Carl's Jr's in Guthrie.
They were Historically Authentic (at least in relation to that goofy TV ad featuring Lady Marmalade Biscuiteer).
Now they are gone. (sob, sniffle)
(whut the heck is a "low-carb spree" innywayz? "spree" implies something other than a life-style change.
Perhaps a shop featuring round, punched out, tofu hardtack slabs with some turk-jerky might take its place? =)
Joe Kimball 10-12-2013, 08:06 PM It appears as if a similar thing is happening as with the ex-122nd and MacArthur location, itself a Hardee's conversion that had turned dated and rancid with use, which in turn moved 3/4 of a mile up the road or so. The food quality is awesome at the new location, and the employees seemingly happier.
I never go there without a coupon or a text message code, though. They're a little proud.

Is that, like, compared to, oh . . . I dunno . . . say, Tuckers, Nics, Smashburger, 2BGuyZ, Red Robin, or the other one?
(do they have any "healthy choices"? unlike those nasty purveyors of chicken strips that have popped up all over the place?)
I will admit that I miss Backyard Burgers over there NW of the house.
The one over by . . . Rockwell and that other street.

Um, sure? The food is fresh and as advertised. It's not local or heavily promoted as boutique, but you don't feel stupid after ordering it, especially with the coupons that come roughly monthly in the mail.
They have a few salads, and "healthy choices", loaded term that that is, are down to asking for customization at most places; for example, leaving off mayonnaise and requesting they "low-carb" a burger by adding a lettuce wrap in lieu of a bun...for which they are known nationally, I think.
RadicalModerate 10-13-2013, 12:16 AM Apparently, Hardee's/Carl's Jr. is making a fair and balanced attempt to make the rest of their menu equal the quality of those exceptionally good biscuits they used to have. At the locations where they used to be in business. And the new locations, too.
I salute their efforts in that direction.
I am sure of at least that much. =)
boscorama 10-13-2013, 08:13 PM By "low-carb spree", I refer to early days of a regime, when you (I) need more fatty junk to ward off hunger. After a few days, satisfaction with leaner meals becomes easier.
SOONER8693 11-30-2013, 10:49 AM Just saw the sign that says this location, SW 89th and Western, will be a new Carl's Jr.
bombermwc 12-02-2013, 07:37 AM Because when no one goes to your restaurant because it's nasty, the best thing to do is tear it down and build a new one.
SoonerDave 12-02-2013, 08:07 AM Because when no one goes to your restaurant because it's nasty, the best thing to do is tear it down and build a new one.
Especially considering most of these current Carl's Jr. locations are converted holdovers from the second "Hardees" generation in OKC, which dates them back to at least the mid 80's if not possibly the late 70's in some cases. For a fast-food joint, a 35-40-year old bldg that probably has myriad structural issues (to say nothing of things like building systems such as heat/cooling) that could be fixed, but not economically, scraping it down and building fresh makes great sense. Combine that with the fact that I believe the typical new Carl's location is a one-off of the quick-build panel-wall varieties, and the economics of a new building make even more sense.
Jeepnokc 03-29-2014, 10:14 PM Drove by there tonight and the new store is complete and open. Amazed at how quick they could tear the old one down and get the new one back up.

And I think it was opened up about two weeks ago. Kids have already tried it an issued their seal of approval :)

Also drove by it just a little bit ago. Was driving, so had to look quick. I think it had some LED lighting on part of the outside sections that continually changed colors. I thought it looked pretty cool.

We saw it also. It is above the doors and changes colors.
scottk 08-19-2024, 08:51 PM The Carl's Jr in Edmond at Danforth and Kelly has closed. The store was built from the ground up as a Carl's Jr maybe a decade or so ago?
There is a brand new McDonald's (rebuilt) across the street and Starbucks. Hard to imagine that another fast food place wouldn't move into this location.
When I see the number of cars at any Carl's Jr compared to a McDonalds, Wends or even Burger Kings I wonder how any of them stay in business. To me they have no real identity. I think I can maybe name 2 items on their menu, The Famous Star burger and the Big Carl, I drive by the one on 39th and Portland a lot and it always seems dead. I ate at them more when they were Hardees.

Used to eat breakfast (and their hot ham'n'cheese) at Hardee's all the time. Have eaten at a Carl's Jr. twice since they bought and converted Hardee's to Carl's Jr. here in OKC.

Their breakfast biscuits are still the top for the fast food world in my mind. The lack of customers at Carl's Jr makes me think the food will always be old, so I tend not to go, but when its done well I think it is on the better side of fast food options.

They are very strong in the south where they still operate as Hardee's and known for their breakfast. I am in Portland this week and there are a lot of Carl Jr's. I had commented on that to my wife yesterday. (I like Hardee's breakfasts).
Interestingly , I found a local chain here (4 locations) called Burgerville that does a better biscuit. They put onion and hashbrowns on their breakfast biscuit. They source 90% of their ingredients from within 400 miles. If they would just add a pork chop or country steak biscuit.....would be in breakfast heaven.
Carl’s Jr here still say they serve Hardee’s breakfast.
Urbanized 08-20-2024, 09:09 AM Personally I think Whataburger does the best breakfast from a fast food burger chain. ESPECIALLY when they are offering the jalapeño cheddar biscuit, which frankly should never be allowed to drop off if the menu (though it does from time to time, stupidly).
Jeepnokc 08-20-2024, 09:14 AM Carl’s Jr here still say they serve Hardee’s breakfast.
The menus here at Carl Jrs don't say Hardees breakfast like OK but they are pretty similar except missing some of the more southern items like pork chop. They do have biscuits and gravy though. They had merged menus years ago even though kept branding the same. I actually worked at the Carl Jrs at 23/Broadway many many years ago.
Carl's Jr. was really big in California and then merged with Hardees in the Midwest.
It's one of those fast food places that seem like a relic of the 90s.
They would put Featuring Hardee’s Breakfast on their Marquee.
Dob Hooligan 08-20-2024, 10:30 AM They would put Featuring Hardee’s Breakfast on their Marquee.
I think they did for over 15 years. IIRC the merger of Hardee's and Carl's Jr. was executed in the 1990s. It was a smart move by any measure. Hardee's was an eastern US based company that was moving westward at a slowing pace, and Carl's Jr. was a California based company that had the same issue moving east. Carl's Jr. had a well-regarded burger menu, and Hardee's had a strong breakfast menu.
Most of the Carl's Jr. around OKC were built as Hardees in the mid-1980s, when they came strong onto the market. Like Grandy's, they are 40 year old buildings that are really showing their age. Appears the local franchisee (or corporate) philosophy is to let the existing properties wind down as a way to right size their market presence.
Remember, Carl's Jr. was big in the mid-2000s, with Paris Hilton and other hot girls in bikini's doing their ads.
TheTravellers 08-20-2024, 10:36 AM Carl’s Jr here still say they serve Hardee’s breakfast.
Yeah, we tried it and it just wasn't as good, and we generally don't do fast food breakfast much (if at all) anyway anymore...
corwin1968 08-20-2024, 10:43 AM Before they started closing, I had consistently excellent food from them. The Star with cheese is a much better example of that style burger than Burger King's Whopper. I was surprised to discover that Dairy Queen's burger is also that style and the two times I ate there, they were excellent. Carl's Jr. also has an excellent grilled chicken sandwich in the Santa Fe.
Speaking of breakfast, Whataburger's breakfast burger is my go-to. I LOVE breakfast burritos and taquitos, but I'll choose that breakfast burger every single time!

I love the breakfast burger from Whataburger. My body has aged to where it is more filling than I want recently, so I have gone back to the Sausage BoB. Whataburger is the best breakfast menu, IMO.
After reading the comments early today, I Got the guys Carl's Jr. this morning, 39th & Portland. Old building, but still good breakfast and good employees.

The dividing line between the two is the Arkansas-Oklahoma franchise zones. Sallisaw still brands HARDEES as the franchisee is Ft. Smith based.
I miss the cinnamon raisin biscuits. Those things were delicious!
Also, I need to know what other breakfast items (aside from the burger) people get from Whataburger, because both times I've tried it, it has flat sucked.

I didn't know HARDEES was Ft. Smith based. Coming from Ft. Smith to Tulsa like 10yrs ago, I was so confused about how Carl's Junior was using the Hardees star until I found out they were the same thing.
Looks like they have a Hardee's in McPhearson, KS too. And Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana area. I honestly didn't know Hardees went that far westward.
Assuming Google Maps is accurate - it looks like if you draw a line from about Ft. Smith to Spokane, everything east/north of that line is Hardees and West/south of the line is Carl's Jr.

This is all I ever went to Carls Jr. for. I don't understand why they got rid of them after so many years.
