no1cub17 07-31-2013, 12:09 PM I'm really excited about the Nic's concept. I've not been to Nic's yet (I know, I know) but mostly because I don't want to take a bus just for lunch. So I'll be happy when they are squarely located within my walking bubble. :)
You can always drive you know :-D
Roger S 07-31-2013, 12:48 PM I'm just hoping it makes Nic's Grill easier to get into.
pickles 07-31-2013, 12:57 PM Nic's can be like our own little version of Shake Shack in Central Park.
kevinpate 07-31-2013, 01:09 PM Bored, and when that happens, the mind wanders. Example: how many junior sized Nic's from the Ice House will it take to equal a full size Nic's burger?
Roger S 07-31-2013, 01:15 PM I don't drive (or own a car). :)
You could always hail a cab and get dropped off curbside at the end of the line.
You could always hail a cab and get dropped off curbside at the end of the line.
And it would be well worth it. :)
Teo9969 08-01-2013, 12:45 PM Sid you need to try the real Nic's.
Not sure that I like the idea that it will not remain open during the winter months...Just do the skates out of a temporary building during the winter months.
And has the ice rink always been open 3 months of the year?

do you think lots of people would be happy to sit outside and eat in dec and jan ??

Nvm...thought this was a small indoor setup.
jn1780 08-01-2013, 01:15 PM Im sure closing down during skating season is do to a lack of space more than anything. Most of the tables are removed to make room for the skating rink.
metro 09-18-2013, 07:40 PM Any word on ICE HOUSE aka Nic's? I thought it was supposed to open in September, is that still on track?
Teo9969 09-18-2013, 08:52 PM It'll be in the next few weeks. I was in Nic's just a few days ago and he's compiling names for a soft-opening in a few weeks.
Praedura 09-23-2013, 02:25 PM New sign going up for the Ice House:

According to their facebook, they should be opening in just a few days.
ljbab728 09-23-2013, 09:32 PM I'm hoping that's a temporary sign. LOL

Maybe it's a peel and stick tattoo!!!
Anonymous. 09-24-2013, 08:58 AM Looks like they're seeing which font style to use.
Both look boring, but the shorter font is superior from that photo.
Garin 09-28-2013, 07:36 AM By the looks of some pictures of the burgers they've been working on it's a Nic's burger with a twist :( Let's see what has made Nic's successful ? Why screw this up people????? Are they trying to cater to all the skinny jean self proclaimed foodies downtown and midtown? Make the burgers just like Nic's does or don't call it a Nic's burger!

I was in Nic's this week and someone asked him about it and he said that the Ice House would be the second best burger in Oklahoma City. The best would still be at Nic's Grill.
This looks good to me!

Roger S 09-28-2013, 12:04 PM Are those the new McDonald's Quarterpounders?
They said the burgers would be a smaller version of Nic's but they still look plenty huge.
Roger S 09-28-2013, 12:38 PM They said the burgers would be a smaller version of Nic's but they still look plenty huge.
Yeah, still a substantial burger... They look a little more white collar with that leaf lettuce too.
But what really makes a Nic's burger a Nic's burger is being asked...... "Mayonnaise or mustard Bubba? Cheese and everything?"
I've noticed the t-shirts Nic & Javon are wearing these days have "Cheese and everything?" printed across the back.
Martin 09-28-2013, 07:23 PM those burgers look great. -M
/but now i have the song 'electric blue' stuck in my head.
Dustin 09-28-2013, 07:56 PM Ketchup on a burger? What monster would do such a thing?
kevinpate 09-29-2013, 05:50 AM Ketchup on a burger? What monster would do such a thing?
Hush yo mouth. In moderation, it makes for an acceptable break from A-1 every now and again.
catcherinthewry 09-29-2013, 11:12 AM Ketchup on a burger? What monster would do such a thing?
So true. Once you hit 10 years old, ketchup should not be on a burger.
Paseofreak 09-29-2013, 11:46 AM It's OK every once in a while so you can remember being 10.
Looks like they are having a soft opening today with a possible open date of tomorrow:

Nice. It's a simple menu and reasonably priced.
Roger S 09-30-2013, 06:01 AM So it's a smaller version of the original Nic's Cheeseburger combo for an additional $1.15 and you don't get to have Nic ask you "Cheese and everything?" .... Nah... I'll stick with the original.
And Nic doesn't ask me "Cheese and everything?" anymore..... I've eaten the same burger from the first day I walked in the place. So he just says "Here ya go Bubba!" and hands me a cheeseburger combo. ;)
Edit: Oops... my bad... the Cheeseburger Combo is $2.87 higher than at Nic's Grill.

i would guess the rent might just be a tad higher than the effective 0 nic currently pays ..
BoulderSooner 09-30-2013, 08:43 AM do we have any idea on the hours?

You think? ;) Still won't persuade me to get less for more but that's just me. The place should still be a success and a great alternative for those that don't like the hassle of getting in Nic's Grill.

I have never eaten at Nic's because 1) they are only open from 8 to 2; 2) they aren't open on weekends; 3) there are usually crazy lines; and 4) I'm a bit claustrophobic.
So, I'm very happy to pay a little more for access and setting -- especially since I can take my time and not feel like I need to create space for everyone standing in line. Plus, beer. :)
BTW, is Nic's even open for breakfast any more?
I've heard that it no longer is.

You should go to Nic's next time you're here and order one to go!
Roger S 09-30-2013, 09:30 AM BTW, is Nic's even open for breakfast any more?

Not currently but when I was there last week Nic said he was going to start opening for breakfast again in November. He wants to concentrate on getting the Ice House up and running for now.
So, they are now only open from 11A - 2P Monday through Friday?
I really have tried to go there in the past but it's getting harder and harder.
Roger S 09-30-2013, 09:35 AM You should go to Nic's next time you're here and order one to go!
Or do like I do and drive by Nic's to see how long the line is. If it's longer than you want to deal with you move on to one of the other fine restaurants in the area.
The Plaza and Uptown 23rd restaurant explosion makes finding an alternative a lot easier..... There is also Taqueria Rafita's in the strip center across from Nic's that is turning out some great Mexican food. it's the former cook from Los Comales.

I'm not sure what his opening hour is now... He used to switch over from breakfast to lunch about 10:30 so I'm guessing he is opening sometime around 10:00 to 11:00.
bigjkt405 09-30-2013, 10:41 AM I missed the free burgers and fries they did last night. Does anyone know if they are open today for lunch at the Ice House?
Don't think they are open quite yet... Their site just says "soon".
Bigrayok 09-30-2013, 05:08 PM Don't think they are open quite yet... Their site just says "soon".
Ice House was not open today. I ended up eating a cheeseburger, fruit, and ice tea at Flint that cost 16 dollars, 19 with tip. It was good, but it was the most expensive burger I have ever eaten including the kobe beef burger at Who's Who in Dallas. Does anyone know if Ice House will take plastic? Nic's is famous for being cash only. It is always fun to see the looks on the newbies faces when they find out it is cash only.
Bigray in Ok
I'd be shocked if they didn't take credit cards.
Nic isn't running this, just providing his expertise.
Garin 09-30-2013, 05:44 PM Nic said they would be open on Wednesday , I got there today at 1030 and he had already served about 12 people lunch.. They served 700 at the soft opening, the whole park smelled like onions the homeless we're coming from all directions so they had to shut down early.
bradh 09-30-2013, 08:56 PM someone with the "expertise" should ditch the lame domestic swill beer choices and provide a choice of each from 3 local brewers

I don't think anyone expects that people who go to his original location would go here instead. It is mainly to service people who already intend to be in that area. As for higher prices, I would expect that the overhead is higher downtown. The prices are not unreasonable at all.

Cash is always accepted in OKC. For some reason there are folks
that don't realize this.
Garin 09-30-2013, 10:14 PM Nic is also putting a food truck together and it will be the same menu as the ice house with a few more options

Why wouldn't regulars of the original location go here instead? Nic's draws a lot of regulars that are already in "that area". I'm one of them being within easy walking distance of the Ice House.
Higher overhead had already been established for the price increase but thanks for reconfirming that.
BoulderSooner 10-01-2013, 10:34 AM Glad to do know that. I've yet to try Nic's but I guess I won't bother now.
really? lol
BoulderSooner 10-01-2013, 11:21 AM Something funny?
that anyone would not try a place (especially somewhere that is close to universally loved) because they only take cash

instead meaning in place of the original Nic's. He's probably right. People who eat at Nic's will still go to Ice House, but just because Ice House is more convenient, when that person wants a Nic's Burger, it will be in that wonderful little shack off Pennsylvania.
I know I'll still want to have the full Nic's experience even if the food at Ice House is very comparable.
Plus, I do want to try his breakfast and other items, not just the burger.
Roger S 10-01-2013, 11:33 AM Maybe a DM conversation? I can think a 3 reasons right now. :)
Seemed like an odd statement to me too. I can think of at least 3 places I dine regularly for lunch during the week that are all cash only. Nic's, Pho Lien Hoa, and Coney Island.
Not counting the cost of your cab to get there... A $10 bill gets you a cheeseburger, fries, a drink, and covers the tip.
I almost never carry cash anymore and therefore if I had actually found a time when Nic's was open when I was in the area, there is a pretty good chance I would have stood in line, experienced great anticipation and cravings, and then ultimately be denied because it would never have occurred to me that in this day and age any type of legitimate business wouldn't even take a debit card.
I honestly can't think of an experience in the last several years when I have not been able to use my debit card.
Roger S 10-01-2013, 12:26 PM So neither of you have ever been in a situation where a businesses credit card machine was not working?
Had it happen to me just the other day at the Sonic near Classen.
Guess I've had technology fail on me enough times that I don't always take it for granted that said technology will always be available to me. Cash, on the other hand, has never failed me.

His breakfast and thursdays fried chicken special are both excellent.
