Always the corndogs for me. Been that way since I was old enough to attend.

I'm not going to the fair but I posted a picture of a bacon covered caramel apple on my FB page that is supposed to be served at the fair this year.

If anyone tries one be sure and let me know what you thought.

Your are going to spend an average of $5-$10 at each booth. Food items average about $4-$6. Drinks are about $2-$3. Don't bother using the vending machines they are just as expensive. What I recommend is to bring friend and split everthing if you want to try a few things other wise your going to blow through your money fast.

The food vendors have been about my only draw the last several years - and honestly, with all the quality food trucks and food truck events in the city now, the wife and I decided we just didn't have any reason left to attend the fair. Hope everyone has a good time, but these days I prefer the less hassle, less expensive Plaza, Midtown and other outdoor events.

I enjoy the idea of the food at the Fair, but never the execution (or the feeling I get after eating it). I do enjoy visiting with the folks in the Ag barns though to see where all that food originates.

Just be glad she's still okay with being seen with you in public - much less at the fair.

Most parents I know with teens have teens that avoid being seen in public with their parents at all cost - especially a place (like the fair or the mall) where all there other friends may be - and parentless no doubt.

I'm betting the fair is our largest 'baby-sitter' - with parents dropping their kids off in droves without a thought in the world as to what they are up to and who they may come into contact with.

As long as there is beer, carnival rides and deep fried food there will always be a descent sized crowd going to the fair.

On another note, it's hard to believe it's been 32 years since the abduction of Cinda Pallet and Charlotte Kinsey.

2) Perhaps the Averageosity ("Fairness") of the food doesn't balance out the surly parking attendants.
3) What? I don't get to puke off of the Monorail anymore?

5) Wot the heck happened to the Goodholm Mansion?
6) It always rains. Thank goodness . . . otherwise I couldn't get stuck on the Tower Observation Saucer and would have to settle for the walkways.

(My REAL Fair Favorites):
a) Helmut's Beef Wellington Rolls
b) The Fire-Roasted Corn
c) Those danged ol' Cinnamon Rolls
d) The wine tastings/tents
e) That there big ferris wheel
f) The fact that Carney's never seem to change.
g) You used to be able to buy an authentic copy of The [as seen on TV] Great Wok of China from an entertaining huckster in The International Building.

Mostly the folks who don't yet have the Walmart hours and directions GPS App on their smartphones I would suspect.

When The Suits took over the enterprise, The Ambiance declined, despite their best efforts.

Heard the same thing for years about Crossroads, yet somehow both still draw folks (but I suspect the fair draws way more in its short run than CRM does all year long)

Come to think of it, food was not that big of a deal either in the 80's. The rides, games, shows and exhibits where the main reason my family went. The food was typical carnival food (funnel cakes, cotton candy, corn dogs, hot dogs, hamburgers, pretzels, popcorn and elephant ears). We always made it a point to eat before we went to keep everyone from devouring too much junk food.

The crazy food creations did not come about until the late 90's/Early 2000's.

We dont typically go to the fair because of the cost and crowd, but a few years ago we went and I tried terriaki (strong misspelling, autocorrect wont fix it) chicken on a stick and it was really good. Didnt taste anything like i expected it too.

Wednesday was the day I went in 2011 (my first time in 16 yrs). I liked the lower number of children and people in general. We walked the midway, surprised at how many rides weren't even open. Finding bench space was no problem. Didn't succumb to fair food but if I had, it would have been Sammy's calazone and/or a corndog or two.

RM, it's something else to see where Walmart people go when they're not at the 'mart.

Eating a slice of the best pizza, ever, purchased just inside, and to the right, of the entrance door into The Great Hall of Hucksterism and Shiny Stuff Plus Helmut's Strudel/Wellington Rolls, while listening to The Andean/Peruvian Inca Band--featuring flutes and CD's for sale. (and keeping a wary eye out for rogue guinea pigs that might have escaped from the livestock pens*)

Just got back from the fair. I was a little adventurous and tried the donut burger and bacon covered caramel apple. The donut burger was delicious but the bacon caramel apple was okay.

I would avoid the fair today if you don't enjoy little, immature, middle school and high school kids. They get in free today. It was awful. I was so close to punching about 10 little brats.

Took the family on Saturday. We only visited a couple of the buildings, and didn't notice anything different from last year, or the year before, or the year before....

Spent most of my time on the midway and the carnival rides, or rather, watching the carnival rides my daughter was riding. Perhaps it was because last year's near-puke experience was still fresh in my mind, but I think I may have become a touch dizzy from just watching one of those rides. I wasn't about to get on one of those nausea-inducing contraptions from hell that I used to be so fond of.

On the food items, we didn't eat anything groundbreaking. My wife and I typically split whatever we order so that we don't get too full on any one thing.

Foot-long corndog (split among the four of us)
Egg Roll
Funnel cake (traditional powdered sugar type, not those fruit-covered kind) - also split among the four of us.
Part of my daughter's order of chocolate-dipped frozen cookie dough
Deep fried ravioli - meh, not that good
Deep fried garlic mashed potatoes. (split among the four of us) Four mashed potato balls on a stick, lightly breaded and deep fried. I only had one of them and it was plenty. They are delicious, but very filling.


My son hit the bullseye and dunked Bozo the clown. The clown doesn't seem as obnoxious as he used to be, and that seems to take some of the fun out of it. My son also managed to win a huge stuffed gorilla on the game where you must navigate a rod with a hole in the middle down a spiral, spinning rod without touching the sides. The carney was very generous with his assistance with the boy, helping him out after he had made it 90% of the way and making a big show of him winning. One the way to take it to the car, the carney got plenty of free advertising from all the people gawking at it and asking what game we had won it on. It barely fit in my SUV. I thought it was going to have to ride on top like Grape Ape. This is a depiction of it roughly to scale. :D

All in all, its not a bad fair this year, but nothing to rave about either. It was a fun night of entertainment with the family. I'll rate it as "fair". ;)

Went Sunday. Really the only food that I crave there is the hot dogs. Nobody seems to do hot dogs as good as the fair.

Funny, my wife complained about the surly parking lot / gate attendants as well. "Why are these people so angry?"

My group here at work always has one day a year that we go for a "team-building" lunch excursion at the fair... It works out great because you get to try a lot of the food without having to drop a C-note.

This year I had:

deep fried cookie dough
pulled pork tacos from the craft beer tent (it rained on us so we hunkered down there for a while)
bacon cinnamon roll
shrimp corn dog (while hunkered down in the wine tent for a while)
deep fried bacon chedder mashed potatoes
fried oreos

All were very good... the shrimp corndog was ridiculously good. But, the deep fried mashed potatoes were so good it was almost offensive....

So, last night my wife took me to Sean Cummings' Irish Pub for my birthday.
(I had the Boxty with Dilled Salmon. It was so good that it defies description.)

I asked Sean if he had any more "political" videos other than the two I had seen.
He said to check Youtube because he had a maybe a hundred more.
In searching for the videos I accidentally stumbled onto his "Chef Sean Cummings" collection that is separate from the rest.

It was here that I discovered this little gem, with the same title as this thread.

P.S. In order to get each of the delights shown in the video up to the "worth six dollars" level, one might consider inserting a stick into the item. (I know, I know, it's difficult to insert a stick into an Oreo, but that's what provides the "value added" factor.)

I missed you last night. My friend from London and I were sitting next to the musicians (against the front window) and it was for my birthday as well. Sean's is always a good choice whether it's Boca Boca or his original or current Irish pub. Vito's is pretty good too.

The Award Winning Cheese Curds were ok however, they gave me the worst case of heartburn I have ever had. It was so bad it turned me away from anything else fried for the rest of this week.

The pork chop sandwich made the trip to the fair worth while. Very delicious with and without the Head Country BBQ Sauce.

The wife enjoyed the corn on the cob and a chunk of peanut butter fudge from one of the vendors in one of the buildings. The buildings were repetitive (Mattresses, Hot Tubs, Flea Market Wares, and home improvement products) big waste of time. Although, I will admit I am growing fond of Agtropolis because of my son. Seeing the animals just made his face light up he really had a good time.

We went Tuesday night. After hearing beef wellington mentioned on here I tried it. Not bad. We usually get some of the roasted corn but the downpour sort of ruined that.

Went to agtropolis also. Those alpacas are cute.

Went Sunday. Really the only food that I crave there is the hot dogs. Nobody seems to do hot dogs as good as the fair.

I meant corn dogs. lol Hot dogs = ballpark. Corn dogs = fair. And cheap beer works with those two foods. For some reason, a premium beer, not so great. lol

Not to be improper but, I did find it rather amusing that many women were eating those giant corn dogs. Enough gutter talk now back to the topic.
