I think it needs to be near a major hiway. I never use the turnpike and I think a lot of other people do the same. I would think a location along I-35 or I-40 centrally located would work. I live east of Edmond but I would think that maybe around 1-35 and Memorail rd or Broadway extension and memoral would be better.

The turnpike is a major highway. The turnpike at Penn has a traffic count of 61,000 cars a day, Broadway Extension at Memorial 42,000, I-35 at Memorial is 67,000. Considering most of the turnpike traffic is probably local, while a decent amount of I-35 traffic is thru, the turnpike probably is carrying around more people wanting to shop.

I must be the only one who got the impression from that article that the property guys at QSM said to Costco hey check out this space we have if you want it and Costco said yeah no thanks. It didn't sound like Costco was interested in it at all.

That's definitely one possible takeaway from that article. My main takeaway is it is going to sit there and rot because Macy's wants too much for it.

I believe that is correct.

I'm trying to find out more from their broker but my understanding is they were not actively looking at OKC yet and even if they were, I can't imagine that location would appeal to them much, especially since it's on the backside of the mall with almost no visibility.

catch22

Would be a very strange location. I can understand why they wouldn't be interested. Noble effort on the QSM management, that's a definite out of the box line of thinking but they are the wrong retailer for that space.

Also, it's two levels and low ceilings... I can't image the building could be saved, even with a lot of renovation.

What on earth would be the advantage to Costco? It's not like people are going to be shopping for back to school clothes and then say, "Hey, I think I'll stroll over to Costco and get a pallet of dog food."

If they wanted to be on the Memorial corridor there are dozens of better locations.

The SE corner of May and Memorial would be perfect for a Costco. The owner of that land must be asking a lot because it has sat empty for years and years.

Awesome news.

We need to not expect the same results from an OKC store because Tulsa has almost surely benefitted from all sorts of migrant shopping that OKC is not going to privy to. But if it's breaking company records, especially right now in this economy, that's a great sign for Oklahoma.

Costco is kind of a destination store. I don't think a second store in Tulsa is going to net that much more in sales. It the kind of stoer I would go to once a month to stock up on........... Now if they open a store in Okc, then they tap into another group of shoppers. I might shop Tulsa if I'm in the area but not up to driving that far once a month. Now if one is open in say Norman or Moore and I live northside of Edmond, I would consider the trip onces a month.

I think if they open in OKC, I'd switch to them from Sam's pretty quickly. I really liked their stores when I lived in California.

I don't even have to think about it, depending on location. Although I did finally get around to trying the new Sam's around 44 and May and found it to be a much better experience than the one on SW 3rd (low bar), assuming Costco is smart on location, I doubt I'll even return to that Sam's. If they insist on building on the overused trope Memorial, then I'll wait for their second metro location and keep shopping that Sam's in the meantime.

Don't think so and agree that the Sam's app is awesome.

Walmart is doing a great job with technology and ease of pick-up. They are winning more of my business.

In fact, I hate the Belle Isle store (and wish they would add a parking lot drive-thru pickup) but I order odds and ends through their website then go pick them up. Great prices and no shipping costs; pretty hard to beat.

That Sam's app pretty much eliminated my hatred of going during busy times. I can walk right in to what I need, scan, pay, and walk out. It's terrific. I'll probably get rid of my business membership next renewal, since I don't think I'll need to go early anymore.

I have learned that Costco was very close to buying the old Macy's at Quail Springs but then the deal fell through.

That tells us they are actively looking in OKC and will probably choose a site near the Memorial corridor.

They should buy the land that's north of the Macys. Then another tenant could take the Macys spot and revitalize the whole area.

I'll just be glad when we have one so I can stop hearing people whine about not having a Costco and talking about how great they are. I remember this same kind of thing before we got a Dave and Busters. Oh, I must have missed that. Sam's has made vast improvements over the years, so I don't think the divide is as great as it might have been in the past, and that improvement may have been to try and keep up with Costco. There are a lot of folks who have relocated to OKlahoma in the past several years who are accustomed to those stores, in particular, and I could understand their lamenting their absence here. I've been able to get by just fine with Sam's, Homeland, Uptown Grocery, etc. :)

That location just doesn't make any sense to me at all unless it was a great bargain or a quick entry to market.

I'd imagine they'd want better visibility than what the Macy's location would have afforded them.

More info from better sources...

Macy's thing was never close to happening and the story was probably put out there by Macy's/landlord. Not at all a good fit for them, they had no idea how to deal with the mall connection, extreme lack of visibility due to being in the back of the mall.

However, they are actively looking along the Memorial corridor although nothing seems imminent. There is also the possibility they go to Norman first.

In Nashua, NH, Costco is located on Daniel Webster Hwy, which has EVERY SINGLE STORE you can imagine, including supermarkets, Target, Walmart, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Best Buy, Pheasant Lane Mall, and even BJ's Wholesale (like Sam's and Costco) right down the road.

The same thing was in Atlanta. They opened a Costco next to Cumberland Mall, right on Cobb Parkway and close to all the big box stores.

So, I don't understand that logic. But, I will say - I would be ecstatic if they put a Costco in University Park North in Norman. There certainly is plenty of road. (Side Note - Ed Noble Parkway in Norman is becoming really sad now as University Park takes off).

Now that Life Time Fitness has moved on to Quail Springs, my understanding is that Costco is now interested in the land on the southeast corner of Memorial and Western, directly east of Chisholm Creek.

They are still talking to Chisholm Creek as well but seem to prefer the visibility the other property would provide.

Costco may end up doing this location first instead of Norman.

As I have mentioned before, Costco will serve a niche for the OKC consumer. I always have been pleased with their private brand, their excellent customer service, happy friendly employees and they pay them a good wage and excellent benefits. The only thing perplexing I find is that Lubbock, Wichita, Tulsa all opened Costco's in much smaller markets?

Costco close to a deal in far north OKC (http://www.okctalk.com/content.php?r=392-Costco-close-to-a-deal-in-far-north-OKC)

It looks like the second time will be a charm.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/costco061217.jpg

Costco is close to finalizing a deal to buy land on the southeast corner of N. Western and Memorial / Kilpatrick Turnpike.

Several years ago OKCTalk reported that Costco would be coming to the southwest corner of that intersection, but the Seattle-based company later walked away from a letter of intent to buy that property in favor of other markets, including Tulsa.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/costco061917.jpg

The latest location is directly across Western from the original site in the Chisholm Creek development.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/costco061017a.jpg

The company later came back to the Chisholm Creek owners 4 different times, but talks stalled and ultimately the two sides broke off negotiations.

From highly credible sources, OKCTalk has learned a deal at this new site – where Lifetime Fitness first had a letter of intent before opting for Quail Springs Mall – is highly probable and that Costco has already invested significant money in engineering and planning costs, with the full intention of building on that property.

Costco opened in Tulsa in April 2016 to great fanfare while Sam's Club and Walmart continued their aggressive expansion in Central Oklahoma.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/costcotulsa.jpg

The proposed Oklahoma City location is a mile east of both Sam's Club and Super Walmart as well as a soon-to-be new concept Target (read our exclusive report here (http://www.okctalk.com/content.php?r=387-OKC-to-get-one-of-first-new-concept-Target-stores)).

It now appears Oklahoma City shoppers may soon have a Costco of their own, as many seek an alternative to Walmart and its various store concepts.

With Oklahoma's liquor laws set to change in the next year, it improves the chances of getting more Costcos because they move tons of wine, beer and liquor.

It will encourage Trader Joe's to expand in the state as well.
