I mean I get it, Costco makes the majority of their money from memberships, so they (Costco) want as many people to have them, and not share, but this seems like it would create a bottleneck at the entrance and I am sure some sort of privacy concern? I don't see the privacy issue at all. barrettd 01-11-2024, 07:19 AM The stated purpose is to not have unauthorized shoppers creating a bottleneck with loaded carts at checkout. We generally go in the evening, so we attributed the empty bakery tables and complete lack of roasted chicken activity to be due to them just opening, but apparently they had no gas to run any of that. If you buy the same items all the time, its just so much quicker to order online and then be able to just pull up and get your items rather then walk the store even with the scanning options. Ok i am older and I would have a learning curve on that. Just not having to go in the store is such a plus. I wish Costco had that option. I would understand having to buy the higher priced membership and if they had a min amount like $50 or $75. I dont like the delivery option. I would not get up to the dry goods or the freezer. I get maybe a $100 of mixed items at one time. Also the option for older folks not having to try to walk the store. I'm always too lazy to sift through all the boxes as I check out, so it's a nice perk of curbside for me. Pete 04-02-2024, 03:12 PM Anyone notice the Costco in Moore eliminated the scan gun from self checkout? What an awful idea. Took me way longer to check out. On Memorial, the guns are still there but they are for the employees to scan big items too large to wave over the scanner. The process is way slower now but I'm sure they've cut down on theft. I read that they are testing a system where the card holder has to scan their card on entry. Not sure how it works but the goal is to cut down on card-sharing. scottk 04-02-2024, 06:55 PM On Memorial, the guns are still there but they are for the employees to scan big items too large to wave over the scanner. The process is way slower now but I'm sure they've cut down on theft. I loved the self-checkout at Costco, until the hand scanners went missing. I would usually only pick up a few items, and it was easy to quickly hand scan a 40 pack of water or the 12 pack of paper towels in the cart. Bypassing the people who buy many more items in the regular checkout. As you said, the process is way slower now having to flag down a Costco Team Member to scan the large items. If I had more than 10 items, I'll go to a regular checkout. With having 2-3 team members already at self-checkout to help/monitor and the meticulous receipt checking when exiting, I don't understand how a place like Costco would have that much theft by members to begin with, especially when all of their items are quite large to begin with, how can you sneak out with something? I think people who steal, are always going to find ways to beat the system and steal unfortunately, no matter what protocols are in place. I don't have a Sam's membership, but in the other thread about Sam's and the mention of the scan and go and cart-x-ray when exiting sound like they have a much more efficient point-of-sale model in place. Pete 04-02-2024, 07:23 PM I don't have a Sam's membership, but in the other thread about Sam's and the mention of the scan and go and cart-x-ray when exiting sound like they have a much more efficient point-of-sale model in place. I've been a loyal Costco customer for over 20 years, but they are lightyears behind Sam's when it comes to tech and checkout. Equally important, Sam's website has absolutely everything in the store, plus much more. With Costco, fully 95% of their items are not on their site; you have no choice but to go in person and see if they have it. Today, I discovered they seem to have dropped this cooked brown rice that I've been buying for over 15 years -- at least, I couldn't find it. No way to confirm on their site if they still carry it. And directly related to a vastly superior digital site, Sam's has a great delivery program. I still like the customer service and Kirkland items at Costco (superior to Maker's Mark) but shopping there is a huge hassle in comparison to Sam's and most the time, it's not worth it to me. I'm not a Walmart fan at all and I never thought I would prefer Sam's in any way, but here we are. corwin1968 04-02-2024, 09:44 PM I think I've posted elsewhere on this site, but removing the hand scanners was one of the last straws for me. We'll continue, but we are close to giving up on Costco, even though I despise anything to do with Wal-Mart. I put in a complaint when they removed the hand scanners and an assistant manager got back to me and tried to convince me that removing them was MORE efficient for checking out. Complete and total B.S.!! The tiny number of cashiers and the long lines make me not to want to even go there. Also, on numerous occasions, I've arrived at the gas station shortly after their posted opening time, only to find the pumps all still padlocked. I understand that sometimes things happen, but this happens far too frequently. Pete 04-02-2024, 09:52 PM ^ I was there today (Tuesday) about 2PM -- about the slowest time you can go. And they were still very busy with pretty long lines at all the checkouts. It took me quite a while to figure out you can no longer use the hand-scanner. Actually, it took an employee coming over after quite a bit of fiddling around to tell me. Leaving them there just confuses people. It's all a bit of a mess. For me, it's a simple matter of Costco still being stuck in the 90s while all their competition has made huge leaps forward with all types of tech and delivery options. In this day and age, it's completely unacceptable to not be able to see what they carry on a website; very few of their items are shown. barrettd 04-03-2024, 07:18 AM ^ I was there today (Tuesday) about 2PM -- about the slowest time you can go. I'd be happy if they just kept stuff in the same place for longer than a few weeks. When they first opened, I got the membership, but grew very frustrated having to start from scratch every month or so on the layout of the store, trying to find the things i always bought. Sam's very rarely makes big changes to their layout as far as where stuff is, but the one on Memorial is also wide open enough it's pretty easy to find what is needed. Add to that the lack of technology at Costco, and it's just not worth it for me. scottk 04-03-2024, 06:40 PM Add to that the lack of technology at Costco, and it's just not worth it for me. Surely Costco is getting this feedback collectively from members? I feel the same way, the deals are great, but the antiquated check out system compared to Sam's, the Costco.com/Costco App poor user experience, and the endlessly searching in store for a product because they feel like moving it every 48-72 hours. I know they pride themselves on the "treasure hunt" model, but I am greatly annoyed to have to walk up and down every aisle to find an item that I saw on the last visit. As the Winco thread recently pointed out, the lack of an efficient point of sale is becoming increasingly annoying. mugofbeer 04-03-2024, 10:13 PM This is why you have choice and can shop elsewhere. Yes, I often have to decide whether to do my grocery shopping at 7-11 or Costco...? It's not even as convenient as its closest competitor, much less an aptly named convenience store. I have found the quality of products at Costco hit or miss, to be honest, and I prefer the meat at Sam's, as well. Costco blade tenderizes their steaks and also cuts the spinalis off all the ribeyes, so I won't even bother with them anymore. mugofbeer 04-04-2024, 07:26 PM Yes, I often have to decide whether to do my grocery shopping at 7-11 or Costco...? We like the nitrogen as we've actually found that the air pressure doesn't move around anywhere near as much as regular air does during the weather/temperature changes. We just make an appointment to get the tires rotated while we shop, then they will adjust pressure with the nitrogen if needed.
