View Full Version : Oklahoma Weather Discussion - August 2013
Anonymous. 08-20-2013, 08:20 AM Weather thread getting buried due to actual summer conditions.
Looks pretty August-like the next week or two, near identical days of sunny, mid to upper 90s with lows in the 70s.

That works for me... My pepper plants can use a little summer.

Yup. Things were drowning out there. I hope to have a nice bumper fall crop. Hopefully. Maybe. We'll see.
Some of us could use a short dry spell. It'll give us time to fix the yard and hopefully get things back in order soon-ish around here. Can't wait. Then it can rain all it wants, I don't care. Bring on another blizzard this winter, that was cool.

I was starting to think maybe I should have planted rice. ;)
Achilleslastand 08-21-2013, 02:08 AM I sure hope the heat we usually get in August isn't just waiting for Sept to show up.

Looking at long-range models. It looks like the ring of fire is going to stick around through about the end of the first week of September. Then we see it start to break down.
Anonymous. 08-23-2013, 02:51 PM Surprising amount of storms/shower over the SE quadrant of the state.
Consider yourself lucky if you get under one of these. These are purely dewpoint + heat storms that will die off with darkness.
Anonymous. 08-26-2013, 09:31 AM Still looking at another 10-15 days of ring of fire.
This stretch of dry heat will put most of the state in the 20-30 day zone of little to no precipitation. Majority of the state is at 10-12 days with less than .10 of an inch.
kelroy55 08-26-2013, 09:42 AM I know they are calling for hot and dry for the next few weeks here in Ft Worth. Close to 100 each day and that's unusual for this time of year from what all the weather folks say.
venture 08-26-2013, 09:52 AM Our questions have been answered if Summer has just be delayed or skipped I think. Sigh. Come on November.

I named this summer "the summer that never was". I might have to retract that and hopefully we only have another week or 2 of this hot weather.
Roger S 08-26-2013, 10:13 AM It's my fault.... We moved our annual July fishing trip to mid September this year so we wouldn't be fishing in 100 degree weather.... Apparently Mother Nature caught wind of our schedule change and modified summer heat accordingly.
Oh, and I also pulled up all my soaker hoses last week.

This winter threatens to be “bitterly cold,” with below-average temperatures in two-thirds of the country. That’s if you believe the folksy — but often, they claim, accurate — Farmers’ Almanac.
The almost 200-year-old almanac again comes out Monday, and the AP reports it’s predicting a harsh winter, one that could even bring a blizzard to the first outdoor Superbowl in years.
“We’re using a very strong four-letter word to describe this winter, which is C-O-L-D. It’s going to be very cold,” managing editor Sandi Duncan said.
The Almanac is also describing the coming winter as “piercing cold” and “biting cold.”
The Farmers’ Almanac predictions are based on the same analysis of sunspots and tidal action, largely ignored by modern meteorologists, that the publication has used since its first issue, in 1818. The publication claims it’s correct 80 percent of the time.

This is an excellent retrospective on the deaths of stormchasers Tim Samaras, Paul Samaras and Carl Young in the May 31 tornado. I posted it in the current weather thread but others may want to move or repost.

Anonymous. 08-29-2013, 03:21 PM Looks like we may get a break from the dry stretch Sunday into Monday this holiday weekend. Doesn't look like a super soaker, but it's something.
Celebrator 08-30-2013, 10:58 AM Here's a question for all of you long-time Okies.
Is there any weather lore that you are aware of that speaks of natural signs that will emerge around here during late summer/fall that gives us any clues as to what type of winter we may have?
For instance, a family member that lives in Buena Vista, CO has said that the elk are trumpeting already in the hills, and that around there, folks believe it means there will be an early and harsh winter this year.
Have any weather lore passed down from our wise predecessors? Did any of it seem to verify ever?
venture 08-30-2013, 07:37 PM Will see more about this later, but the El Reno tornado has been downgraded to an EF3.

Who dissed our twister?

Reality. ;)
Reality. ;)
Like Jersey Shore?
Plutonic Panda 08-30-2013, 10:47 PM Yeah, that is weird seeing as how it was said to have had winds of nearing 300mph. . . if that is true, and the scale of the tornado, I will still consider it an EF5 :p

Damage scale...damage scale...damage scale...
Plutonic Panda 08-31-2013, 04:18 AM Damage scale...damage scale...damage scale...I knoooooooow, it is just so weird calling it an EF3 considering how big it is. I don't know why I think like that, but that is just what my brain wants to think lol

We have a fairly ugly winter every few years. It's been a few years since we had one.
Just sayin'.

Call me crazy but....
I'll believe Al Gore the day a 100 foot wide tornado is labeled an EF5...
Plutonic Panda 08-31-2013, 12:35 PM Call me crazy but....
I'll believe Al Gore the day a 100 foot wide tornado is labeled an EF5...I thought it was the widest tornado ever recorded. 2.5 miles wide, or something like that.
OKCisOK4me 08-31-2013, 12:43 PM I thought it was the widest tornado ever recorded. 2.5 miles wide, or something like that.
Just cause it was wide doesn't mean it's going to be a beast on the EF scale.
Think back to 5/3/99. That Moore tornado was smaller than the one this year and had recorded (can't remember if by doppler or actual) winds of 317mph.

Those were measured winds in the radar, but I think those even got revised down some as well as they went through the data more. You'll be lucky to get any actual wind measure in a tornado that high simple due to flying debris likely destroying the device before hand.
Damage scale...damage scale...damage scale...
We are lucky it didn't wipe out Yukon. I'll take the downgrade.
venture 09-01-2013, 12:18 PM Sept thread coming up...
