How did you get this
So Fassler Hall will allow smoking inside? That's disappointing.
from this?
But like Skinny Slim's, they will likely allow smoking outside and at Fassler Hall, that is about half the establishment.
I understand the original comment. This place looks so '70s that you're almost stepping back in time. For it to be non-smoking seems jarring. It's like if Marty McFly went back to the 50s and Biff Tannen suddenly had a black friend. It's like, "wait a minute..."

I must have read Pete's comment wrong as well, cause he says they will allow smoking outside and at Fassler Hall. I don't know how else you can read that?

I can see now how that could be misread. I didn't see it at all when I first read it.
jccouger 12-09-2014, 10:42 AM I see, I see. When I first read it, by "half" I thought he meant ALL of Fassler hall. Since Fassler Hall + Dust Bowl = one whole building, so Fassler Hall = half. I didn't realize he meant HALF of just Fassler Hall.

5alive 12-09-2014, 02:07 PM Lol I hadn't noticed the planter/benches carry on the same concrete theme as the building structure.
JRod1980 12-09-2014, 02:29 PM I've driven past this location several times and never noticed that Dust Bowl is spelled out on the Yellow siding. But it looks like you can only see it if you are on the east side of the building looking west.

My partner only noticed the letters the other day.. I like the signage he hates it and thinks it needs some neon or something LOL
I suspect it will be lit in some way; maybe from behind.

Yeah, I'm not too sure what to think of it just yet. It doesn't really fit with the name or the concept. Some of my favorite signs are WKSY, R&J and Empire, all those signs really fit their business.
tpg4635 12-09-2014, 05:53 PM Wait... Thats the sign? What a shame. It looks incomplete.
Soft opening tonight... Open for reals on Thursday:

Not sure but I don't think so. You could always stop by and act like you know what you're doing.

I say opening night. I expect at least a few Lebowski parties happening at this place. I see they have caucasians on the menu. Well, at least on the Tulsa menu. I assume the OKC menu will be the same. I guess they don't have a website for the OKC location yet. Couldn't find one.
Just announced that Fassler opens tomorrow (Thursday) at 11AM and Dust Bowl at 4PM.

I've said this before, but how are these bench seating a good idea? You could fit 10 people on each of those tables but only the 2 on the outsides could get up? Seems really, really dumb. Other than that, this place look freaking fantastic.
It looks like it's only those two tables.
sooner88 12-10-2014, 04:02 PM It also looks like they are two tables pushed together. Not sure if you have the ability to seperate them though. Highs in the 60s this weekend... this place is going to be slammed.

I'm definitely wearing my Big Lebowski bowling shirt when I go to DB!
I'm actually a pretty decent bowler so I'll definitely enjoy Dust Bowl for more than just the hipster scene.
Fassler Hall is just *huge*. Has to be far and away the biggest bar in OKC.

Urbanized 12-11-2014, 08:19 AM I checked out both places last night. Actually it's technically one place. They share a license, so you can freely walk up and down the stairs between the two. First and foremost, the place(s) is (are) HUGE. MASSIVE.
As much as I love all of the new places that have opened in the past couple of years, this was one of "those" moments when I honestly felt like I was in a different city, much like when I first stood in a renovated Myriad Gardens under the shadow of Devon Tower. Most of the friends I was with or encountered said the same. Total game-changer, and I don't believe that's an overstatement.
Going sunday for an Alumni get-together and I am stoked.

So cool to hear this and it doesn't surprise one bit.
I think this establishment is about four times the size of any other bar in OKC.
Plus, I happen to really dig and appreciate all the mid-century design cues, like the planters and benches out front. Can't wait to experience the place in person.
jccouger 12-11-2014, 08:31 AM Urbanized, how was access to the bar? With a place this huge there is bound to be a lot of traffic. Do you think it will take a while to be served, or will it be fairly quick?

IGuess it is the same place, Dusty Freeman is the GM. Strange he has a Mcnellies email address though. He has already had VIP's out, and trained the staff. I guess maybe a dry run.
Indicated that the staining of the concrete took longer than thought originally. They are definitely going to have a crowd...........especially with college students at Christmas break and the New Year.[

As long as they are properly staffed for the crowd in question, you will NEVER have a problem getting to the (a) bar for a drink. Both bars are simply massively-long. They could honestly probably have 20 bartenders working at Fassler and 10 on the bar in Dustbowl. If you had trouble getting to one bar you could always go to the other. The place is built for huge, huge crowds. Especially the Fassler portion. Between indoors and out you could probably put close to 1000 people in the place without it feeling too crowded.
Some of the high points for me:
The finishes, as Pete mentioned. Amazing that Brian and his team could take such a cold industrial concrete structure and give it such a warm feel, while still allowing the bones of the building to show.
The Fassler courtyard feels like it has been there forever. Instantly one of the greatest outdoor spaces in OKC of any type.
The 10th-facing outdoor balcony-type space, which is connected to the courtyard but has its own feel and an OUTRAGEOUS skyline view
The staircase. It makes for such a great, dramatic transition betweeen the two.
The bar at Dustbowl, which overlooks 10th. I see spending MUCH time there.
Sausages.
Lots of people walking around with giant German beers.
The private room at Dustbowl with 4 lanes. Didn't know that existed until last night.
The fire pit. GREAT common mingling space.
Pretty much everything else.
There is also an outdoor bar they can open in the nicer weather.
And, a cool stage on tracks that slides from indoor to outdoor.
I hope they get polka bands. :)
Urbanized 12-11-2014, 11:38 AM Forgot to mention the great flexibility in the Fassler space with all of the overhead doors. It was chilly (though not cold) last night, and one of the overheads was open, but it felt great inside with all of the bodies. Two overhead doors open would have been too much. But in warmer weather they can all be open. It offers a great way to regulate temperature and feel inside and out. Also, because of the high wall and way the courtyard is oriented you'll generally never get a cold north wind and can be in the courtyard (by the fire pit, natch) and have an overhead open even in much colder weather.
shawnw 12-11-2014, 11:55 AM Sounds to me like when they designed it they said "what are all the things we ever wanted the Tulsa location to be but couldn't do?"
stphntylr 12-11-2014, 02:56 PM Got to experience this the other night at the soft opening and its AMAZING. Going back tonight for the mayhem that will be the grand opening. Official capacity is 1300 according to the staff. Thats CRAZY!
The comment about the upstairs patio, it is INSTANTLY the classic spot to hang out in OKC the view of the city is just breathtaking. Makes this place feel like a whole new world.
Hope to see some of you out there tonight!
dankrutka 12-11-2014, 03:30 PM I really love the concrete benches. This building is really impressive in person. Has there been any indication what will go into the east spaces (which are really big too).

Teo9969 12-11-2014, 03:32 PM So stoked to hear about this…I'm going Saturday night I think. It will be interesting to see how full it is.
The space to the east in the same complex is still for lease.
jccouger 12-11-2014, 03:43 PM The space to the east in the same complex is still for lease.
WHAT?!?!!?
People don't like making money anymore? lol I'd be willing to bet a lease is placed on this place in less than a month.
Teo9969 12-11-2014, 03:46 PM 13th/Walker to 10th/Broadway is going to be unreal in May through October. If this place seats 1,000+ combined with Bleu Garten for at least 500, + McNellie's, Cafe Do Brasil, 1492, Stella, Irma's, Kaiser's, GoGo Sushi, Broadway 10, R&J, The Garage, O-Bar, Packard's, Nic's new concept and Waffle Champion.
…Are you kidding me? You have over 2 weeks worth of options if you go to one of those restaurants every day. We could see 3k to 5k people walking around a 7 block spine as early as the coming spring. It will almost look like H&8th every night.
MidTown Renaissance is laughing all the way to the bank. In 10 years, there will be no area of OKC that can compete.
HangryHippo 12-11-2014, 03:50 PM Are there any plans for the lot directly south of this development? I wondered, especially since the roundabout plan is no longer going to happen.
ljbab728 12-11-2014, 04:24 PM I had the opportunity to attend Steve's "Behind the Headlines" event here this afternoon along with Elliott Nelson and Brian Fitzsimmons.
Elliott mentioned that they are looking for something unique to OKC to go in the space that isn't leased yet. They hadn't decided yet what that might be. He is also thinking about bringing his Tulsa sushi concept to OKC but said not necessarily in Midtown.

CurtisJ 12-11-2014, 05:05 PM Someone here was wondering earlier if the long tables can be pulled apart and they absolutely can be.
That's disappointing, half of the charm of Fassler Hall in Tulsa is that the long tables typically force groups of (slightly intoxicated) strangers to share tables, often with interesting results.
skanaly 12-11-2014, 05:29 PM Will there be video screens or projections on the walls at the end of the lanes? That always seems to be a key feature

ljbab728 12-12-2014, 12:02 AM Brianna was at today's event also and here is her story with video.
http://www.oklahoman.com/article/5375156?embargo=1
To find the right carpet for Midtown’s new Dust Bowl bowling alley — a sort of ’70s, psychedelic beige plaid motif, architect Brian Fitzsimmons and owner J. Elliott Nelson googled “ugly carpet.”
The building is the largest that Fitzsimmons has designed from the ground up. The finished space takes inspiration from the surrounding neighborhood’s mid-century buildings as well as 1920s warehouses with decorative brickwork and pre-cast concrete.
“We kind of married it all together to create something new,” Fitzsimmons said.
You can see me several times in the video. (shudder) I'll leave that for others to figure out.

Urbanized 12-12-2014, 05:43 AM Yeah, I saw Todd there too. In fact, Weds night was a bit of a who's who of Midtown and downtown.
^Seems like that's the case when anything new opens.
Urbanized 12-12-2014, 07:40 AM Yeah, but moreso at this opening than most.
sooner88 12-12-2014, 09:44 AM Went last night. I didn't appreciate how massive this place is until I walked through..... Fassler Hall alone will be one of the biggest draws in OKC. We each tried different sausages and the duck fries.... everything was great. The view from the deck is one of (if not the best) views of downtown in the city.
For the record we sat at the long table that was mentioned earlier.... the tables can seperate but the bench cannot. Sat together with 3 different groups.
edcrunk 12-12-2014, 10:00 AM It was an interesting mix of people as well.
