It's July, might as well start a new weather thread, since no one else has. Since the severe storm season is over, severe was left out of the thread title. Of course, don't take that as a guarantee that no fierce thunderstorms will pop up this month.

Looks like the unseasonably cool weather with highs staying in the 80's may last through the weekend. Little, if any chance of rain for central Oklahoma on the 4th.

I wish the 80s would last. It's been really nice, and my AC has had a break. This time last year it was running almost non-stop and my OGE bill was the biggest bill I had.

Not sure which thread to post in.

I'll just use this one until mods merge them.

So the weather is awesome this week as we all know. It is interesting to see this giant low spinning over the great lakes region giving the plains this northerly flow of cooler air. I have not seen this scenario last such a long time before (that I can remember).

Looks like we will stay mid to upper 80s through the Independence weekend and eventually creep back into the 90s next week (still way better than 100s). In terms of rain chances, it looks like over the next few days and into the weekend we will have slight chances of hit or miss showers/storms. These will be storms riding along little energy bursts from the giant spinning low over the midwest. Thus any activity will come from the north and move south/southeasterly. Basically don't cancel any plans as showers will likely be random and not last long, just keep a watch on radar.

Hopefully we can get another round of decent rain in here by the end of next week, things are starting to dry out here in C OK as we missed out on that complex of storms that collapsed on Thursday night last week.

Central Oklahoma didn't miss much rain from June 27, probably in large part due to the line moving so fast. Only few locations got over .75 of rain before it started collapsing.

Or forget about June and add August on to July to reflect transition to a less lively weather period.

Slight chances of rain later this week.

Looks like Wednesday into Thursday is the best best.

As of now we are still above normal in the rainfall department this year (in C OK). But it can erase that easily if we keep up this dry stretch. (OKC only has roughly 1.5" the last 30 days)

EDIT: Oh yea, 100F or extremely close to 100F every day.

Heh, yeah I get what you mean. I imagine everyone still calls it the Sears Tower. That's what I want to call it too -- just trying to be official.

Same thing here. Nobody says "Cotter Ranch Tower". It's the Chase Tower. And me personally, I never say National Western Heritage Blah Blah (whatever it's called) -- it's still the Cowboy Hall of Fame to me. And the Science Museum is the Omniplex, as far as I'm concerned. :)

Weak showers and storms developing along sagging boundary moving north to south over most of OK. As of this time most activity is in north and northeast OK.

In addition, there is a new MD for potential severe thunderstorm watch out for E CO into SW KS.

This afternoon's weather developments in Oklahoma may liven thing up enough to return the topic of discussion to Oklahoma weather. Currently, as of 2:20PM scattered thunderstorms not severe, so far, have been developing to the north and northeast of Oklahoma City. It must feel good at the Stillwater airport where the temperature has plunged to to 75 after being cut off from going over a 100.

Meanwhile, a heat advisory covers north central and eastern Oklahoma, until 9pm, while an excessive heat warning is out for Tulsa County. Nothing heat related affects Oklahoma County.

Bunty

Ha, ha, interesting how when the NWS updated the forecasted high for Stillwater at 2:12 pm, it upped it from 101 to 102, even though showers at the time were developing in the area. Meanwhile, special weather statement for counties to the north of OKC:

Updated: Wed Jul-10-13 02:44pm CDT
Effective: Wed Jul-10-13 02:44pm CDT
Expires: Wed Jul-10-13 03:15pm CDT

And those of us even older still call it the "Liberty Tower." I can't find anyone that calls the Cowboy Hall of Fame that sterile PC revision they brewed up, and same goes for the Omniplex.

And the Cox Center will always be the Myriad, right down to the roof leaks that plagued it when it first opened 40+ years ago.

MD out for central OK:

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1371
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0242 PM CDT WED JUL 10 2013

AREAS AFFECTED...OK...NWRN AR

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 101942Z - 102115Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...40 PERCENT

SUMMARY...ISOLATED DAMAGING DOWNBURSTS ARE POSSIBLE WITH TSTMS
ACROSS OK INTO NORTHWEST AR.

DISCUSSION...RENEWED UPDRAFTS ARE FORMING INVOF OLD CONVECTIVE
DEBRIS FROM GARFIELD COUNTY...ESEWD TO NEAR THE AR STATE LINE OVER
ADAIR COUNTY. THIS ACTIVITY SHOULD GRADUALLY INCREASE IN BOTH AREAL
COVERAGE AND INTENSITY OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS WHICH SHOULD FORCE
WEAK SFC BOUNDARY TO SETTLE TOWARD THE I-40 CORRIDOR. WITH
TEMPERATURES ON THE ORDER OF 100F AND RELATIVELY DRY SUB-CLOUD LAYER
THERE IS SOME CONCERN FOR DAMAGING WINDS. PW VALUES RANGE FROM
1.6-1.9 INCHES WHICH COULD ENHANCE DOWNBURST POTENTIAL...ESPECIALLY
IF SINGLE CELL UPDRAFTS COALESCE INTO LARGER CLUSTERS. AT THIS TIME
IT APPEARS SEVERE THREAT MAY REMAIN TOO ISOLATED TO WARRANT A SEVERE

Cells gong up just north of metro are strongest in the state.

Just issued SVR warning on them. These are slowly drifting south. Consider yourself lucky if you get under these - good downpours of rain.

As the storms blow up and die down, their outflows will have potential for damaging winds. (See wind burst discussion above)

I remember when the Omniplex was the Kirkpatrick center.

Well, now, not to draw too fine a point on it, but I believe the Kirkpatrick center was the name of the building where the old planetarium was located at the State Fairgrounds....they just moved the planetarium out to the Omniplex. I think the building may still have that old kirkpatrick name attached to it...?? Maybe I'm nuts, who knows :)

I always thought the entire building on 50th was the Kirkpatrick Center and the Omniplex was simply one of several entities that occupied the building along with the Air and Space Museum.

Quick radar grab. Severe cluster out west. Also seeing a bunch of collapsing showers in Southern and Eastern OK that could bring a little wind for those near them. Still hoping for a shower or storm to pop up over head to help break some of this heat.

Update on summer:

All models are pretty much latching onto a retrograde low next week, starting as early as Sunday evening.

What does this mean? Good rains and temperatures in the low 80s. This is basically as close as you can get to a tropical system parking over us, without one actually doing such.

You mean I'm actually going to have to start talking weather again? So much for my vacation until September. ;)

Many up north will be welcoming this. Many areas in Ohio, Ind, Michigan, and others have been having rain for a good part of the last month. Anything to let them dry out a bit will be welcome.

Pretty much all of these little storms that go up produce some decent wind when they collapse. Could have very well been something like that. On the radar they are pretty easy to spot (the growing circles).

Something else that is interesting. We have a weak low developing in the Gulf just off the Florida PH coast. NAM is probably most aggressive in developing it out of the short term models and it makes landfall tomorrow evening near Mobile. The movement of the low would be the WNW and will take it back up over into AR. If it can hold together and move into OK, that could further enhance rainfall potential here as we go beyond Tuesday.

Low probability of the low doing anything, but just throwing it out there that there might be an additional curve ball in this.

With the high parked over the Eastern US, this is setup we normally need to feed landfall tropical systems our way.

OK, I'll fall on the stupid question sword and ask "what is a retrograde low?"

SoonerDave
07-13-2013, 10:15 PM
Usually, a low rides the upper air currents west to east across the country. The jet may steer a system north or south on that path, but west to east is just the "normal" and normally inevitable path it takes. A "retrograde low" is just the meteorology term for a low that goes in reverse - one that goes against the meteorological grain by migrating east to west when a high forms to the west, and a low pressure center forms to its southeast. Think of it as something getting stuck between two gears and just getting pushed in their common direction of rotation.

Air around the high moves clockwise, air around the low moves counterclockwise. The low forms and rides the common airflow, rolling to the west without the normal upper-air currents to push it east.

Venture will probably read this and choke a bit for its oversimplification, but that's at least how I think of it.
