View Full Version : Oklahoma Weather Discussion - July 2013
bandnerd 07-29-2013, 08:21 PM I, for one, am tired of being an evening meal for certain bloodsucking insects...
Try rubbing your wrists and neck with a dryer sheet. It's worked for me before. But yeah, they are kind of a nuisance this year, but we always have them in our backyard, even in drought years (perk of living near a lake?)
Bunty 07-29-2013, 08:50 PM Severe thunderstorm watch has been extended some to the south. It still doesn't include Oklahoma and Tulsa Counties. It lasts until 11 pm.

Anonymous. 07-29-2013, 09:21 PM These storms are no joke right now. Slowly sliding south.
s00nr1 07-29-2013, 09:39 PM Looks like Canton Lake will be receiving some stormwater tonight.
venture 07-29-2013, 09:59 PM Winds in Orion NE of Seiling have to just be howling right now. Vance radar is pretty worthless right now with the beam getting a lot of interference right now. TLX showing a pretty significant area of damaging winds.
soonerguru 07-29-2013, 10:12 PM What is the Canton Lake forecast?

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 450...
VALID 300318Z - 300445Z
THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 450
CONTINUES.
SUMMARY...THE THREAT FOR DMGG WIND GUSTS PERSISTS ACROSS REMAINING
VALID PORTIONS OF WW 450. A LOCAL EXTENSION IN SPACE/TIME OF THE WW
MAY BE NECESSARY IN SOME AREAS...OR A NEW WW MAY BE NEEDED.
DISCUSSION...AN MCS CONTINUES TO DEVELOP INTO A 40-KT SLY LLJ AS
SAMPLED BY 1-KM-AGL TLX VWP AND WHERE CONVERGENCE IS MAXIMIZED ALONG
THE SRN FLANK OF A W/E-ELONGATED COLD POOL. WHILE WLY MID-LEVEL FLOW
IS HAVING A TENDENCY TO STEER MESO-BETA CONVECTIVE
ELEMENTS/PERIPHERAL COLD-POOL SURGES EWD/ESEWD...PROPAGATIONAL
EFFECTS DERIVED FROM STRONG INFLOW OF HIGH THETA-E AIR SHOULD
SUPPORT AN OVERALL SWD MOTION OF THE MCS. HIGH PW WITH VALUES OF
2.0-2.2 INCHES PER GPS DATA WILL FAVOR SUBSTANTIAL WATER LOADING
WITH A CONTINUED POTENTIAL FOR DMGG WIND GUSTS. A 51-KT WIND GUST
WAS RECENTLY REPORTED AT THE GAGE OK ASOS SITE. DESPITE NOCTURNAL
COOLING SERVING TO SUPPORT SOME INCREASE IN BOUNDARY-LAYER STATIC
STABILITY...IT MAY NOT BE SUFFICIENT TO MITIGATE A CONTINUATION OF
THE DMGG-WIND POTENTIAL BEYOND THE SCHEDULED 04Z EXPIRATION TIME OF
WW 450...AS THERMODYNAMIC PROFILES APPROACH MOIST-NEUTRAL AS OPPOSED
TO STRONGLY STABLE. AS SUCH...THE WW MAY NEED TO BE EXTENDED IN
TIME/SPACE IN CNTRL/W-CNTRL/SWRN OKLAHOMA...OR A NEW WW MAY BE
NEEDED ACROSS PORTIONS OF THESE AREAS INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. OF
NOTE...SOME BRIEF TORNADO POTENTIAL CANNOT BE COMPLETELY RULED OUT
GIVEN RELATIVELY LOW LCL HEIGHTS AND STRONG LOW-LEVEL SHEAR BENEATH
THE LLJ MAX.

venture 07-30-2013, 12:07 AM Gust front just passed through El Reno with 40 mph winds, so nothing bad there. So far highest mesonet wind report is 60 mph with this complex.
Most intense part right now appears it will stay north of I-40 and south of Highway 33...for the main developing bow. Another smaller bow echo is north of 33 to around Highway 51.
soonerguru 07-30-2013, 12:57 AM It's raining. Just thought I would add my two cents to the discussion.
RadicalModerate 07-30-2013, 08:07 AM I was up until after midnight awaiting Hurricane Force Wind and Hail Armageddon (as prognosticated by Mike Morgan). In reality, it rained quite a bit for a little while here in The Village.
Anonymous. 07-30-2013, 08:10 AM Storms weakened just before reaching the metro last night. Whenever the gust front gets out ahead of the storm, that is a good indication of weakening. Which is exactly what happened last night.
Another inch for the metro added last night. Places in northern OK got anywhere from 2-3 inches. Winner being west of Stillwater with almost 4 inches.
Snowman 07-30-2013, 08:24 AM I was up until after midnight awaiting Hurricane Force Wind and Hail Armageddon (as pronosticated by Mike Morgan). In reality, it rained quite a bit for a little while here in The Village.
I tend to expect everything to be a couple notches below what Mike Morgan says any time he seems excited. Then check what other channels say.
ctchandler 07-30-2013, 12:06 PM My gauge/weather station says 1.02 inches after midnight, none before.

The Stillwater Airport got 3.05" for one of the biggest amounts within Stillwater. The residential neighborhood south of there got slammed by a microburst, or whatever, from the storm last night. Branches were down and tree removal services were out. Most of the rest of Stillwater was apparently spared.
Map below shows how much it rained. Stillwater area didn't get bypassed for a change from the most generous offerings. I wouldn't be surprised if much of the northeast quadrant of Oklahoma turns white from the next drought monitor update.

bchris02 08-01-2013, 01:14 AM So was this the wettest July on record? We had 9.84 inches of rain in OKC this month.
s00nr1 08-01-2013, 07:17 AM 2nd wettest on record behind the 11.90" of Jully 1996.

Anonymous. 08-01-2013, 08:46 AM Regionally, central OK is 9 inches away from the wettest on record. If we never got another drop of moisture for the rest of the year, we would still have had the 4th wettest year ever.

The way the Great Plains can be with extremes this makes me wonder what's in store for 2014.
