Servicetech571 03-01-2014, 06:51 AM Spendign $1M on a $24,000/yr job tells me there is a lot of other money the mayor gets that isn't part of his salary... Dennis Heaton 03-01-2014, 07:24 AM Spendign $1M on a $24,000/yr job tells me there is a lot of other money the mayor gets that isn't part of his salary... And SOME OF THAT could have funded a Metro Bus for the only zip code (73162) without Transit Service. Oh well... kevinpate 03-01-2014, 08:02 AM I read the, um, er, interesting dred response, and I think it's worse than the mailer. Blindsided? Someone runs on open and transparent and yet he is blindsided, within his own campaign, on his own materials. Dang. I was already of the opinion there wasn't a voter around this guy didn't see as mere chum to toss under any oncoming bus, but I didn't think he was low enough to treat his own team as bumper bait. Such poor, poor form. As bad or worse than the mailer itself really. The mailer was just gutter level politics. No real surprise there. But to disclaim your own folk and cry butt hurt over it .... that's a whole new low in a series of low. One could almost begin to wonder if the stress of the campaign has knocked the man off that all cured podium he lept up on a while back. It's gone from odd to strange to rude to tacky to just plain sad and now all the way down the sewer drain to the beyond pathetic retention pond. Dennis Heaton 03-01-2014, 09:36 AM Just invited Councilman Shadid to drop in over here and join in on the conversation. catch22 03-01-2014, 10:23 AM I'm sure we would be delighted to hear his commentary. PennyQuilts 03-01-2014, 10:43 AM Just invited Councilman Shadid to drop in over here and join in on the conversation. I hope everyone is polite. I'd like to hear what he has to say. No need to get nasty, folks. soonerguru 03-01-2014, 10:53 AM I hope everyone is polite. I'd like to hear what he has to say. No need to get nasty, folks. Yes. He has really earned "politeness." Why don't you call him on the phone if you want to chat with him? He lists it on his web site. Tell him you're an undecided voter. He'll be glad to talk to you. You can be as polite as you want. Dennis Heaton 03-01-2014, 11:06 AM Someone from the Shadid camp must have looked in...my "invite" has been removed from his FB page. Maybe it's because I didn't contribute to his campaign treasury? Geesh!!!!! soonerguru 03-01-2014, 11:09 AM Here's what I think happened with that mail piece. The Shadid campaign has been engaged in a sleazy whisper campaign throughout, trying to suggest the mayor is up to nefarious activities in NYC. They have been suggesting he's gay. I think that they had this in the can to use at the last minute, depending on how things went down. And then that poll came out showing Shadid being destroyed and I think it flipped a switch. He is a very nasty and vindictive person. He has the personality of someone who will leave a scorched earth. He will not "lose with class" or dignity. I think Ed Shadid's ego got damaged when he realized what a loser he is a candidate and he had that mail piece released. He needs emotional and psychological help. The therapy he has had is clearly not enough. PennyQuilts 03-01-2014, 11:13 AM Yes. He has really earned "politeness." Why don't you call him on the phone if you want to chat with him? He lists it on his web site. Tell him you're an undecided voter. He'll be glad to talk to you. You can be as polite as you want. WTH? Why are you being rude to me? PennyQuilts 03-01-2014, 11:14 AM Someone from the Shadid camp must have looked in...my "invite" has been removed from his FB page. Maybe it's because I didn't contribute to his campaign treasury? Geesh!!!!! More likely they didn't want to come here and took it off to try to keep people from pressuring him to do so. PennyQuilts 03-01-2014, 11:16 AM I plan to vote for Mick but I have to say, it is beginning to pain me to ally myself with people going out of their way to be so negative and nasty. You sound like a bunch of loons, frankly, and it makes me wonder if I am just missing something and should go the other way. soonerguru 03-01-2014, 11:25 AM I plan to vote for Mick but I have to say, it is beginning to pain me to ally myself with people going out of their way to be so negative and nasty. You sound like a bunch of loons, frankly, and it makes me wonder if I am just missing something and should go the other way. I wasn't trying to be rude to you. Ed Shadid's campaign just distributed arguably the most vile piece of campaign literature we've seen in years, and you're demanding everyone treat him with politeness. WTH? You seem like a nice person but it's a little rich to demand everyone treat him like he's something special when he's just revealed himself to be utterly guileless. The reason Dennis Heaton invited him to chat here was so people could give him a piece of their minds. My point was that if you want to have a nice polite conversation with him devoid of people taking him to task for his disgusting campaign strategy, you may want to reach out to him on the phone. AP 03-01-2014, 11:33 AM I plan to vote for Mick but I have to say, it is beginning to pain me to ally myself with people going out of their way to be so negative and nasty. You sound like a bunch of loons, frankly, and it makes me wonder if I am just missing something and should go the other way. Honestly, I agree. Every time I look at this thread it disgusts me. Dennis Heaton 03-01-2014, 11:37 AM The reason Dennis Heaton invited him to chat here was so people could give him a piece of their minds. Sir/Madam...I'd like to point out that I also invited the Mick camp to come on over and engage in a conversation as well. I did that over 3 hours ago and my invite is still up on their FB. I personally had no intention of bashing Councilman Shadid or his staff. What better place to do a bit of stumping on this last weekend before the election? bradh 03-01-2014, 11:40 AM Not that "he started it" is a good reason to be negative back, but if the candidate under such attacks is taking the high road, is it not alright for some supporters out there to react a little? Turning the other cheek only goes so far when someone has shown they'll go to no limit to ruin a person. Dennis Heaton 03-01-2014, 11:45 AM "In a quality city, a person should be able to live their entire life without a car, and not feel deprived." – Paul Bedford I like that! That's why I appreciate and enjoy this website. There are some of us Retired folks that don't drive anymore, and I always look forward to coming here on the weekends. It is one of the destinations I can get to without having to show my Metro Transit ID. :-) Jim Kyle 03-01-2014, 11:48 AM Mel...What do you foresee happening Wednesday? Inquiring minds want to know! LOL!I'm not mel, but I foresee a demand for a recount since the overwhelming landslide could not have been the result of an honest election... soonerguru 03-01-2014, 11:50 AM If Ed Shadid came up to me on the street today I would tell him he's running a sleazy campaign and he's still going to lose, which will make him look even worse and is a disservice to this city and his own supporters. If he came on this thread to chat I would say the same thing. We aren't talking about royalty. We're talking about a city council man who has just engineered one of the sleaziest piece of campaigning we've seen in recent years. Tier2City 03-01-2014, 12:17 PM Hey Edgar - seen any dog whistles lately? Here's a good one: Gay resolution/play: Cornett voted for a 2011 “gay rights” Oklahoma City Council resolution. He did nothing to stop the offensive pro-gay Christmastime play (The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told) on city-owned property last year. Paid for by Shadid for OKC 2014, 723 N. Hudson Avenue, Oklahoma City, OK 73102, 212-3068, edshadid.com soonerguru 03-01-2014, 12:19 PM Here is the one I got: http://i.imgur.com/4GEnRjp.jpg http://i.imgur.com/CgMlDhV.jpg Paid for by Ed Shadid. This dude is a loser. Just a little reminder of the subject at hand. Not going to bend over backwards to ensure I'm being polite to a sewer rat. soonerguru 03-01-2014, 12:23 PM Hey Edgar - seen any dog whistles lately? Laramie 03-01-2014, 02:33 PM Spendign $1M on a $24,000/yr job tells me there is a lot of other money the mayor gets that isn't part of his salary... Are you aware of the functions of the city manager vs. that of the mayor? Dr. Shadid wants to supplement his income with a $24,000 a year job. You think he's a public servant NOT looking for benefits? Talking about 'quid pro quo;' get outta here with that corn bread acquisition. That salary is equivalent to a teacher's Social Security disability check. http://www.thunderfans.com/vforum/images/smilies/okc.gif "Oklahoma City looks oh-so pretty... ...as I get my kicks on Route 66." --Nat King Cole.http://www.thunderfans.com/vforum/images/smilies/okc.gif Dennis Heaton 03-01-2014, 02:34 PM Ed Shadid for OKC Yes, I will be on KFOR's Flashpoint at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow morning. (Channel 4) It will be aired again at 11:30 a.m. on KAUT Channel 43. Thank you. Laramie 03-01-2014, 02:39 PM Dr. Shadid's campaign is making a last minute power serge on Flashpoint; a great way to supplement his exhausted campaign's advertising budget. He would have to be mayor for a long time to recoup what he has put into this race. If he loses? He needs to start pulling teeth; starting with his own. http://www.thunderfans.com/vforum/images/smilies/okc.gif "Oklahoma City looks oh-so pretty... ...as I get my kicks on Route 66." --Nat King Cole.http://www.thunderfans.com/vforum/images/smilies/okc.gif OSUFan 03-01-2014, 02:44 PM Honestly, I agree. Every time I look at this thread it disgusts me. Shadid has run an extremely negative campaign. That can't even be argued. He just somehow called out Mayor Cornett for supporting gay rights. Cornett hasn't even mentioned Shadid's name let alone produced one piece of negative campaign material. Exactly how are people supposed to react to such a negative campaign from Shadid? AP 03-01-2014, 02:47 PM I get that but what does that have to do with how Cornett supporters act? It's kind of embarrassing. I just can't wait until this election is over so Pete can close this thread. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk betts 03-01-2014, 02:57 PM I just can't wait until this election is over so Pete can close this thread. You aren't the only one. Does anyone think any of us enjoy this? I'm exhausted, I can't sleep. If Mick wins, the streetcar should go forward as planned. It was very exciting to get all the information about companies, cars and propulsion systems this week. I spent months campaigning for MAPS so we could have a streetcar and I see it within our grasp. But I also know that should Ed win, he will try very hard to figure out a way to stop it. And should he succeed in stopping MAPS collections altogether, he puts the RTD that people have been working so hard towards in grave danger of never happening. My passion to see Mick elected is as much about my extreme desire to continue transit progress as anything. I see Ed as threatening that goal and that's what makes it worth all the effort campaigning against him. But I'm really tired. Tier2City 03-01-2014, 02:57 PM Posting this on the NewsOk comments was kind of embarrassing: Poll-driven chameleon-like marketing by anonymous big money is not going to work this time; not with the Mayor’s 13-year track record. Just as occurred in my city council race, and the more recent Ward 1 city council race, anonymous independent expenditure organizations are spending large amounts of money engaging in at least two major live polls (which would cost in the $50,000-$70,000 range) and other expensive support activity for the Mayor’s campaign. The seemingly coordinated strategy of the Independent Expenditure and the Mayor is easily predictable: take the Mayor’s weaknesses and portray them as strengths. The Mayor’s record on public safety, neighborhood advocacy (especially when pitted against special interests), and street and sidewalk investments is abysmal and yet, those issues dominate his messaging. The Mayor tells the same joke at national meeting after national meeting making fun of those neighborhood advocates who question the allocation of resources in OKC (Mick says some variation of “Many people in the suburbs do not like the emphasis on downtown, but I tell them you may not like it but your children and grandchildren will like it and you know what, they are angry because they know I am right”) and now wants us to know how much he enjoys getting out and meeting neighbors. The Mayor does not speak with the City Council with any regularity much less neighborhoods. Adding police officers? We have the same number of officers today as we had 20 years ago with 200,000 more people. The Mayor’s relationship with the good men and women of our police and fire forces is nothing less than toxic. Want to understand the situation? Walk up to any member of the OKC Police and Fire force, any random member, and ask them their opinion of Mick Cornett, his working relationship with them, his understanding of the police manpower study and the future needs of this city in terms of public safety and who they would prefer as Mayor. Those who are not already aware will understand how preposterous it is for the Mayor to portray himself as a public safety advocate. Spending large amounts on streets? Developer after developer was able to get their streets widened and sidewalks built in areas where virtually no one lives in the range of $200 million while the streets in neighborhood after neighborhood have to wait as long as 20 more years to get their potholes filled. The misallocation of resources in the ’07 Bond promoted by the Mayor makes concerns about MAPS3 projects pale in comparison. Notice how Roy Williams tries to turn a perceived weakness of the Mayor into a strength (“The fact that he is interested and wants to stay in that role, I think that bodes well for OKC”). The Mayor is tired. 13 straight years is a long time on the horseshoe. He spent enormous sums of money and almost every other week for two years during his last term getting a MBA in New York City (because OKC apparently does not have adequate MBA programs). Reports of the mayor actively searching for a mayoral replacement because he did not know if he would finish this last term led to uncertainty among some members of the city council. According to sources he had to be repeatedly lobbied by the Chamber to convince him to run. He offers no opinions much less solutions to the most controversial subjects in front of the council; in fact, he generally maintains complete silence. The Mayor was apparently looking for an exit strategy (one does not need an MBA from NYU to be Mayor of OKC although it might be useful for a board seat at Chesapeake), did not find one, was lobbied by those concerned that our campaign is going to be successful and is now running to stay on the horseshoe for years 14-17. There are much better ways to lead the city and make decisions. There is much which needs to be done. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Downtown Farmer’s Market on August 15th from 6-8pm as I outline how we can make more inclusive, fiscally responsible decisions which will prepare our city for the 21st century. catch22 03-01-2014, 03:11 PM I get that but what does that have to do with how Cornett supporters act? It's kind of embarrassing. I just can't wait until this election is over so Pete can close this thread. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk It truly proves a point that Cornett is a great candidate for the position. He is very well mannered and extremely well tempered, calm and collected. He is acting better than all of us (I'm speaking for myself, too). Including the opponent himself, Shadid. Cornett is the adult in the room. While we are getting nasty in political debates, bickering and name calling, Cornett has controlled himself incredibly well. Had it been me in Cornett's position, I would have already blown several gaskets on the campaign trail at some of the attacks from the Shadid camp. I don't know how he does it, but props to him for running a clean campaign so far. I agree, I can't wait for this mess to be over with soonerguru 03-01-2014, 03:39 PM I don't feel at all ashamed at the way people reacted to Shadid's disgusting, gutter-ball mailing. If people hadn't been appalled, then that would have been appalling. Not sure what else people are supposed to do in that case. it's not as if Shadid isn't the one who has caused all of this drama, beginning with his turnabout on the streetcar, MAPS, personal dramas, lies, and sleazy campaigning. I'm not sure how it's appropriate to act in reaction to that. We have had a few trolls here that got picked on a bit, but I don't know what else andrew is referencing. Laramie 03-01-2014, 03:58 PM Great country we live in that protects the freedoms (speech) we all enjoy. All I got to say about that, before they build that 1,000 foot high wall on the Oklahoma border to stop tornadoes...Oklahoma/OKC best fashion some "hills" in and around Downtown OKC before they start laying down the tracks for the Streetcars. 6874 ljbab728 03-01-2014, 11:20 PM Mick is obviously not taking anything for granted. Dennis Heaton 03-02-2014, 09:33 AM Here we goooooooooo... bradh 03-02-2014, 09:35 AM Ugh, just heard Shadid on Flashpoint...you can't force people of diverse backgrounds to serve, there has to be a want to. If there are no candidates for these positions Shadid claims Cornett is passing people of diverse backgrounds available, what is he supposed to do, select people who either don't have the desire or qualifications just to give a board a "different look?" That's not sound governing. Bellaboo 03-02-2014, 11:09 AM I watched it......Mick looked very good, Shadid still in negative attack mode. Nothing to worry about here folks. As long as people will hit the polls. Easy180 03-02-2014, 11:45 AM Streets should be in good shape on Tuesday = landslide victory for ole Mick. kevinpate 03-02-2014, 11:48 AM Hope streets are good. Content folks tend to avoid bad roads. Angry folk will drive on anything to get out some frustration. Dennis Heaton 03-02-2014, 11:52 AM Councilman Shadid stated, "I am obligated to God and I will follow the mandate He gave to me in Proverbs 31:8, by speaking out for the poor and destitute." Dr. Shadid, Proverbs 31:8 reads as follows..."Open your mouth for the speechless, in the cause of all who are appointed to die. (lit., sons of passing away) NKJV All that's left to do now is to vote. LocoAko 03-02-2014, 11:53 AM Was out at a bar last night with my partner and his friend (a gay man) who began rambling about Shadid and how we need to get Mick out of office. I live in Norman and can't vote in the election, and I needed to be polite as I had just met the guy, but I politely told him all about the mailer (he hadn't heard about this) and the fallacy of that Fallin quote. He seemed surprised, but determined to vote for Shadid just because he was a "liberal" and we "need change". Only one vote, and I did what I could, but I just hope there aren't a plethora of people out there who feel like this and just aren't speaking up but will show up eagerly on Wednesday. Paseofreak 03-02-2014, 11:57 AM Unfortunately, there are a bunch of them. The Paseo is chocked full. Dennis Heaton 03-02-2014, 11:58 AM LocoAko...you ought to tell that fella that Councilman Shadid has never claimed to be a "liberal." He is a registered Libertarian, which most folks know are not the same thing, but often confused with one another. Dennis Heaton 03-02-2014, 12:00 PM Unfortunately, there are a bunch of them. The Paseo is chocked full. "Them" ?????????? kevinpate 03-02-2014, 12:04 PM "Them" ?????????? In context, them = people who think Shadid is a better choice than Cornett Paseofreak 03-02-2014, 12:09 PM Thank you, KP. Dennis Heaton 03-02-2014, 12:13 PM In context, them = people who think Shadid is a better choice than Cornett Thanks. I wasn't getting defensive...just wanted to make sure it wasn't in reference to Air Force Retirees in their 60's. kevinpate 03-02-2014, 12:14 PM Thanks. I wasn't getting defensive...just wanted to make sure it wasn't in reference to Air Force Retirees in their 60's. LOL. who knows, some of you may be some of them. :) Paseofreak 03-02-2014, 12:14 PM In talking to the Shadiders around here it seems that his initial campaign themes for the Ward 2 race are ringing in their ears. Many aren't even aware of the controversy kicked up by his latest antics. LocoAko 03-02-2014, 12:15 PM LocoAko...you ought to tell that fella that Councilman Shadid has never claimed to be a "liberal." He is a registered Libertarian, which most folks know are not the same thing, but often confused with one another. Yeah. The sad thing is, as has been discussed in this thread, that how "socially liberal" or conservative someone is doesn't mean all that much at the mayoral level in terms of what is going to be done for the city. I'm about as liberal as they come around these parts and it still seems clear who the better choice is based solely on character and actions. =/ Dennis Heaton 03-02-2014, 12:17 PM Paseofreak...have you checked out candidate Shadid's FB page? Unbelievable!! I haven't clicked over there since the Flashpoint program...gonna give it a couple more hours. Laramie 03-02-2014, 12:56 PM On Flash Point this morning: Shadid said that the new 735-room hotel is bigger than the Skirvin (225), Renaissance (311) & Sheraton (395) hotels combined. These figures are on Pete's OKCTalk site: Downtown Hotel Summary - OKCTalk (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=Downtown+Hotel+Summary) Yeah! Are we getting a new 931-room hotel? 735 room minimum new convention center hotel according to the study is needed. 225 Skirvin 311 Renaissance 395 Sheraton 931 Total If Shadid is not checking these simple arithmetic figures; what can we expect from him as a mayor when the figures get really complex? Who is distorting or inflating the facts? Was this an attempt for voters to assume that Mick Cornett was hiding some BIG money interests behind bringing in a convention center hotel? Please feel free to chime in concerning this morning's Flash Point episode. We should know more once the election for mayor has been decided. http://www.thunderfans.com/vforum/images/smilies/okc.gif "Oklahoma City looks oh-so pretty... ...as I get my kicks on Route 66." --Nat King Cole.http://www.thunderfans.com/vforum/images/smilies/okc.gif Paseofreak 03-02-2014, 12:59 PM Pretty quiet over there just now. A post imploring readers to watch Shadid's CC Open House video and something about no new cops since 1997. Standard Shadid prattle, but nothing that is more than echos. Oh, and there was a post requesting votes for Shadid on May 4th. Dennis Heaton 03-02-2014, 01:09 PM Laramie...did you by chance do any fact-checking on candidate Shadid's statement about the "1,100 appointees?" Shadid apparently did not like KH's question when he was asked where he (Shadid) got his information. I believe his response was, "we checked a lot of records." Uh-huh, right. |
