Sunny Golloway Named Auburn Head Baseball Coach - AuburnTigers.com - Auburn University Official Athletic Site (http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/061413aaa.html)

June 14, 2013

AUBURN, Ala. - Sunny Golloway has been named Auburn's head baseball coach, Auburn Director of Athletics Jay Jacobs announced Friday. Golloway has spent the past eight seasons as head coach at the University of Oklahoma, where he led the Sooners to seven NCAA Regional berths, four NCAA Super Regionals and the 2010 College World Series.

"I'm really excited about this opportunity because I've always held the Auburn baseball program in very high regard," Golloway said. "The history of the Auburn program was a huge factor in making this decision. Secondly, the Southeastern Conference is the top baseball conference in America. Being able to compete in the SEC is a challenge that we look forward to. With our location, we are in a hotbed of talent. We will be able to hit the road recruiting right away, and we look forward to recruiting the best student-athletes to represent this outstanding university."

Sources within the program told SoonerScoop.com the relationship between Golloway and Castiglione became fractured, leading to this surprising conclusion. Sources indicated to SoonerScoop.com earlier Friday morning, Golloway was looking for further upgrades to L. Dale Mitchell Park even after $2 million in upgrades have been performed during his tenure. An increase in salary was also rumored to be a part of Golloway’s demands.

A source told us this evening, Castiglione made the decision not to renegotiate Golloway’s contract in order to keep him in Norman. Based on the lack of rapport in their current working relationship, Golloway was set free to seek out greener pastures -

Interesting.

Galloway always seemed to be a polarizing figure, but if he couldn't get along with Joe Castiglione then it may be best if he moves on.

By all accounts, Joe C is one of the best AD's around.

There is no doubt that Galloway was a very polarizing figure. But Sunny had taken OU as far as he ever could. I think its pretty cleat that he saw the hand writing on the wall and got out while he still could. He landed a very lucrative coaching spot. There may be some growing pains with a new hire but it was long past time for a change.

The problem going forward is that compared to the top baseball programs (and OU is not currently a top baseball program) is that the OU administration has not shown anywhere close to the same type of commitment to improve its baseball stadium and fan experience that most of the baseball powers have committed to.

The recent trip to LSU was a real eye opener on facility’s and fan support!
The commitment from the OU administration will need to change regardless of who is hired.

Well, Dillon Overton, a captain, and other players called out Golloway on Twitter. This pretty much matches a lot of rumors and stories that have leaked out over the years about Golloway. Probably good for OU to move in a different direction.

Where did you read that? The previous Auburn coach made less than what Golloway made at OU. I haven't seen his new salary announced, but maybe I just missed it.

Yes, the older one, not the one who attended all the games with her mother and younger brother.
