View Full Version : Freebirds
disinfected 10-01-2012, 07:39 PM Was just there, the Moe's sign is now completely off the building. I probably ate at Moe's in the last three years over any other place in town. It's bittersweet that it's closing, but the last year or so, the quality has started to drop off.
I've been hooked on Freebirds now every time I go through Texas, and it's become a must-stop. There are a lot more choices than Moe's and the others, not only with meat, but they also offer a few different types of tortillas. (The Cayenne is excellent.)
Sad to see Moe's go, but Freebirds really is a quality place. Leaps and bounds better than Qdoba.
catch22 10-01-2012, 08:18 PM I'm looking forward to trying Freebirds though. Wish Moe's stuck around.
sooner88 10-01-2012, 08:36 PM How long do you all think it will take to renovate the place and reopen?
disinfected 10-01-2012, 09:28 PM The Freebirds in Denton told us the first of three OKC Metro locations will open around December.
Is Moe's still in the airport?
TechArch 10-02-2012, 09:31 AM Last time I was in the airport, Moe's was still there. disinfected, do you know where the two other Freebirds will be located?

All they said was the first one would be in Belle Isle. Don't quote me but I also want to say they might have told me 19th St. area in Moore, but can't remember if I am confusing that with something else.
There is also a Tulsa location that is already open.

there used to be a norman location ... but it closed last year i believe
disinfected 10-03-2012, 08:02 AM What I was told also was that the Norman location packed up and moved to Tulsa with the same owner.
Tydude 10-06-2012, 09:37 AM glad to be eating some delicious burrito once its open sad that Moes closed
MonkeesFan 10-08-2012, 12:47 PM Just called Moe's and they said "Yes, we are open and doing great! Free queso today!".
I guess Freebirds is going in right next door.
Why would they lie about "doing great?" If they were doing great, they would still be open!
I never heard of Moe's but what I have seen on this board, I will have to try it sometime at the airport
I never heard of Freebirds either but went to their website and it looks good, I do love Chipote's so I will probably like Moe's/Freebirds
catch22 10-08-2012, 12:51 PM The Moe's in the airport is a weak excuse for a Moe's.
It is like getting a "Pizza Hut" pizza in a sports stadium. Not really comparable to the actual store.

Good point
Reminds me of Godfather's in a gas station..ugh, I want the actual store back!
disinfected 10-08-2012, 01:23 PM All three of the times I had Moe's in the airport it was just as good as regular Moe's.
The regular Moe's was not all that good in it's last year or so of operation though. Since the original staff finally found it's way out the place went down the drain.
catch22 10-08-2012, 02:23 PM I'm at the airport 260+ days a year. I usually forget my lunch at home once a week so I eat in the terminal about once a week. Everytime I give Moe's a try I always remember why I try to talk myself out of it. The real locations are much better.
Steve 10-08-2012, 09:10 PM I always liked Moe's. I've never been to Freebirds - is it the same premise - pick what you want to go into a burrito?
Martin 10-08-2012, 09:12 PM yep... but with more options than moe's. -M
Larry OKC 10-09-2012, 11:28 AM Was only in Moes one time (had a Groupon) and was impressed. Just didn't make it back before they closed.
freebirds.com
looks promising with an extensive list of "freebies", not sure what their base price is though.
Just from the Burritto blurb
Try the original, we’re talkin’ about the original FREEBIRD. Less hungry? Try the smaller but still mighty – The HYBIRD. Got an appetite? Go for a MONSTER! (Who ever thought you’d eat a Monster?) And if you’re still hungry, we’ll build you a SUPER MONSTER. Weighing in at almost 7 lbs. you may need to share it with a pal (or two). We’re givin’ ya four sizes and four flavors of tortilla to build your perfect burrito creation: Spinach, Cayenne, Flour or Wheat.
disinfected 10-11-2012, 03:47 PM The Super Monster is ridiculous. The Monster is crazy as well, consider the second of four sizes, the Freebird, is the same size as a regular large burrito from Moe's or Chipotle.
sooners83 10-20-2012, 01:50 PM Do they have all the fresh salsa and hot sauce as Moe's does? Free Chips, salsa, etc? Never been. I will def miss the Moe's HOT sauce the use to have out then you would have to special request it.
Steve 11-04-2012, 09:53 AM I have same questions ... I loved the salsa bar at Moe's
bluedogok 11-04-2012, 09:58 AM The Freebirds in Austin do not have a salsa bar, they do have a few different types of hot sauce at the drink bar.
Steve 11-04-2012, 03:01 PM fail
Brett 11-14-2012, 09:10 AM The Freebirds website has the grand opening for the Belle Isle and Quail Springs locations slated for December 13. :D
Brett 11-28-2012, 05:38 PM Store front signage is up.
ThomPaine 11-30-2012, 07:18 AM Interesting...
FREEBIRDS World Burrito is opening the doors of its 2nd Oklahoma City, OK location at 14220 N Pennsylvania Ave #1 on Thursday, 12/13/12. As with every FREEBIRDS Grand Opening, the first 25 people in line will get free burritos for a year. Fans have been known to camp out the night before though so come early!
Debzkidz 11-30-2012, 05:22 PM Yes, it's in front of Dick's Sporting Goods. I drove by there yesterday and noticed it.
Brett 12-13-2012, 05:52 PM FREEB!RDS WORLD BURRITO has officially opened and it is delicious. :)

I doubt it is better than Chiptole
bluedogok 12-13-2012, 09:04 PM I doubt it is better than Chiptole
I preferred Freebirds over Chipotle when I lived in Austin and here in Denver I prefer Illegal Pete's to Chipotle. I have been to Chipolte once or twice in the past two years, went to Freebirds and go to pete's a whole lot more often than that.
Steve 12-13-2012, 09:27 PM Tried it tonight. Food is ok. They don't have a salsa bar like Moe's did. Staff is borderline obnoxious in their attention, "friendliness." Place is very loud. All in all? I miss Moe's.
Wishbone 01-02-2013, 11:30 AM I ate at the Freebirds in Belle Isle and it's pretty good! Lot's of choices but the workers are interesting and the place is very loud. Over all I like Qdoba's a little bit better.
RadicalModerate 01-02-2013, 12:18 PM Yet . . . with all of that . . .
Doesn't Qdoba somehow lack The Surfer/Burrito Connection of "Freebirds"?
(not to mention the missing u? =)
ZNFUymYrqMQ
perhaps not.
Highlight 01-04-2013, 12:13 PM Chipotle = Qdoba = Moe's = Freebirds = same $7 burito at each place = same set up = ho, hum, whatever..........
kelroy55 01-04-2013, 01:34 PM I went to Freebirds for lunch today and I liked it. I should have got the small because the normal size was almost too much to eat.
SSEiYah 01-04-2013, 02:24 PM I went yesterday. It was OK. I do like they have a massive number of options for flavor. The death sauce was not that spicy. The pot brownies were ok, nothing great.
Its a tossup between Qdoba and Freebirds, I like the pork better at freebirds.
ThomPaine 01-04-2013, 03:31 PM I ate at Freebirds last week. Very busy, very hectic, okay food, very friendly staff. Probably won't go back unless I'm with someone who wants to try it out.
If you want similar, but better, please try Vamonos, on Britain and I-235, locally owned, great portions and great food. You don't "build your own" but the menu options are plenty varied. I was in there for lunch today, and it was very busy.

pot brownies? is that another dang phrase that has changed meaning over the years? i must not get out much.
bluedogok 01-05-2013, 10:31 PM That is what they call their brownies made to look like they were baked in a mini-pot. It is a round brownie with a tye-dye label. You can buy real pot brownies here in Colorado.
The "original" Freebird's is in California, a couple of guys liked the idea and licensed the name to build one in College Station and have expanded and franchised the chain since.
damonsmuz 06-09-2013, 10:48 PM Looks like Freebirds, which was to open in a new strip mall on the I-35 access road, will be delayed until the end of the year. According to some guy who was passing out burritos to the volunteers, he said that getting materials in would take a bit longer due to the tornado. Just hearsay, anyone hear confirmation?
bille 06-10-2013, 06:51 AM My initial reaction is that now, materials and workers are in high demand = premium $$
Also all the Moore businesses are taking a hit now in terms of people through the door so it makes sense to wait. Actually I'd think right now would be the time for food trucks to hit the streets of Moore in full force, but that's just me.
AAC2005 06-11-2013, 10:54 AM On a slightly different note, but still in the same area: Has anyone heard from Jesseda? I did some quick scrolling through a couple of threads and didn't see any recent posts by him/her. Judging from some very old posts, it appeared that the Santa Fe/149th Street area was where he/she called home.
Presuming that Jesseda probably has bigger things to worry about and just hasn't posted, I hope everything's okay!

AAC2005 06-11-2013, 11:34 AM Thanks!
Jesseda 06-12-2013, 11:44 AM Yep, I have been busy, all is good on my part. Life is starting to get back to normal, my 8 year old daughter had her first league game last night in moore since the tornado so she was happy to be back on the field. We are currently staying at my parents house with all our animals (dogs, birds, guinea pigs). Im still surprised that all the animals survived, my boston terriers was outside in the backyard when the tornado struck, I still don't know how they survived unharmed, one I found was hiding underneath my bed which had a wall laying on top of it and the bottom feet of the bed smashed down, the other boston terrier a person found down the street hiding underneath a crushed car. Most of my neighbors on my old street in plaza towers have decided not to rebuild and us planning on rebuilding was because we loved our neighbors so we are up in the air on that now. But all in all my family and I are doing well with what has been tossed at us.
MsDarkstar 06-18-2013, 07:18 PM Jesseda, I'm so glad you, your family & all your animal babies are safe. Your poor Bostons! Are they having storm & loud noise PTSD? Our Boston was already afraid of loud noises & thunder (she was a rescue & her original owner had a drunk driving crash during a storm with her in the truck) and since the tornado she just gets paralyzed with fear when it's stormed. Fingers crossed for you that ya'll figure out your future living arrangements soon, I'm sure whatever you decide will be a wonderful home :)
RadicalModerate 11-05-2013, 02:56 PM So, I finally got around to trying Freebirds World Burrito, on North Penn. Although it is ridiculously convenient, location-wise, I've resisted eating there because I figured it would be overpriced and overrated. Boy, was I wrong.
I'm still trying to lose some weight, so I'm paying attention to calories. I decided to have the Hybird (one step up from the smallest burrito.) I told the vivacious, friendly, young lady--on the other side of the counter--that I'd like the white meat chicken. After I told her that I would skip the rice, cheese and beans, she said, "Then let me put on some more chicken . . ." and just about doubled the amount she had originally placed on the tortilla. To that I had her add some grilled onions and peppers, a little chopped red onion, some pico de gallo, some grilled lime and some mild tomatillo sauce. I just sort of unrolled the burrito at the table and ate the filling with only a little of the tortilla. It was wonderful.
I had to try The Death Sauce and wound up using a fair amount of it as it wasn't as hot as I thought it might be and had a nice flavor.
The bill for all this very filling deliciousness was only six dollars and change. I'm going to be eating there at least once a week from now on.
Oh! If I had one suggestion for them, it would be to turn the music down just a bit. It was sort of loud, but at least they were playing tunes worth listening to.
bluedogok 11-05-2013, 09:12 PM We ate at ones in Austin quite often, even when a Chipotle was closer. Up here we go to Illegal Pete's which reminds me of Freebirds but with more options.
RadicalModerate 11-05-2013, 11:34 PM "More options"?
(Dang. How can that possibly be? =)
Well . . . At least I didn't opt for Cain's . . .=)
It is, like, the most famous for non-healthy stuffing without any alternatives. =)
sorry . . . my perspective is skewed. I just got finished cooking up some Lake Texhoma Striped Bass (gift) and some leftover (store bought) Scallops along with some leftover Vigo Rice (deluxo, w/shrooms) on the side, so i'm probably wrong, once again, on this whole deal. =)
plus this thread is about three years past its expiration date.
corwin1968 11-11-2013, 10:23 AM I think my wife and I have been to Chipotle, Q'doba, Freebirds and that littly burrito joint that keeps opening and closing in Memorial, in the same parking lot as Five Guys and Simms BBQ. Freebirds is the one we keep going back to. Pretty good food!
