Not really, more along the lines of supercells going up at random boundaries and producing outflow boundaries which spark additional storms etc. Often times when storms fire along another storm's outflow boundary - there is an elevated risk of wind damage. Think of it as a localized straight-line wind event. venture 06-27-2013, 12:23 PM Well after a two week reprieve of Oklahoma, I'm back serving my sentence here. ;) Anon has most things nail for today. Looks like storms could move into the Metro later after 9PM, but wouldn't expect much. Now I'm going to go back and dream about the 70s and low 80s (most days) I got to enjoy back in the Great Lakes. :) Anonymous. 06-27-2013, 12:25 PM Welcome back. I was beginning to wonder if you fell victim to the ring of fire! venture 06-27-2013, 01:01 PM Welcome back. I was beginning to wonder if you fell victim to the ring of fire! Haha. We got a few decent storms up there, but nothing too terrible. All I can say is where are SPOILED with NWS Norman and also local weather coverage. I'm heading up for July 4 and the following weekend (West Michigan). Can't wait for those 70s and 80s. venture 06-27-2013, 02:38 PM Chicago for a few days then some time back in Michigan. As well as a trip out to Put-In-Bay and Sandusky in Ohio...yes that includes Cedar Point. Anonymous. 06-27-2013, 03:23 PM Storms fired in W and C KS, pretty far west, too... Thus increases chances of storms making OKC tonight. SoonerBeerMan 06-27-2013, 03:24 PM *Not sure if this is the appropriate place for this bit of info or not, so feel free to move it if need be* This is certainly just one person/groups opinion, but for it to be talked about at the AMS Conference I imagine its kind of "buzz-worthy": AMS 41Broadcast @AMSBroadcastCon Comment from @accuweather: beyond day 5-7, it's the EURO ensemble or a human forecast. GFS not a player in their longer forecasts. #AMS13 Retweeted by Shelby Hays Any thoughts? venture 06-27-2013, 05:29 PM http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/watch/ww0379_radar.gif URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NUMBER 379 NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK 515 PM CDT THU JUN 27 2013 THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A * SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF NORTH CENTRAL OKLAHOMA TO THE CENTRAL OKLAHOMA PANHANDLE THE NORTHEAST TEXAS PANHANDLE * EFFECTIVE THIS THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 515 PM UNTIL 1000 PM CDT. * PRIMARY THREATS INCLUDE... Bunty 06-27-2013, 09:09 PM The ominous looking cloud structures of an approaching severe storm this evening, 6/27/12, and then the sudden slam from the gust front was impressive in Stillwater as pictured at Boomer Lake Park: http://stillwaterweather.com/photos/627storm.jpg Bunty 06-27-2013, 10:29 PM Mike Morgan on KFOR showed a picture like the above one that was taken elsewhere. I've gotten word that it's a shelf cloud with the the upper portion showing pancaking layers caused by very strong upper level winds, interfering with the updrafts. The picture only shows the right end of the entire dang formation. I believe the storm had already been on the wane when it arrived to Stillwater. The Stillwater airport had a 52 mph wind gust and only .18 of rain. There were higher wind gusts from counties north and northwest of there. Anonymous. 07-01-2013, 11:16 PM Will update the weekend tomorrow. But how about this weather? Man wish it would last forever. Windows open tonight with the AC shut down. Good stuff. soonerguru 07-02-2013, 08:35 AM Should we start an Oklahoma Mild Weather thread? venture 07-02-2013, 08:48 AM Should we start an Oklahoma Mild Weather thread? Soon as we do that, some tropical storm will come up and bug us. :) Roger S 07-02-2013, 09:18 AM Soon as we do that, some tropical storm will come up and bug us. :) I wouldn't mind a nice tropical storm to put an even bigger dent in the drought than the May rains did. Maybe even end this drought for good. Gotta take the good with the bad. venture 07-02-2013, 09:20 AM I wouldn't mind a nice tropical storm to put an even bigger dent in the drought than the May rains did. Maybe even end this drought for good. Gotta take the good with the bad. Indeed! I could go for 20 days of showers/light rain. The ground is already cracking pretty bad again, so it would help. Not to mention I would have NO problem with going the year with only 1 or 2 days above 100. :) Bunty 07-02-2013, 06:39 PM Below is a panoramic photo of how the shelf cloud looked coming in at Boomer Lake Park in Stillwater from June 27th. Other image shows top wind gusts associated with the line of severe storms. Infamous KFOR-TV weatherman, "Go South!", Mike Morgan, on the 6pm newscast thought the line wouldn't make it very far across Oklahoma, due to it getting choked off by a cap and sunset. He was right. http://stillwaterweather.com/photos/627stormpano.jpg http://stillwaterweather.com/photos/627stormwindgusts.jpg |
