View Full Version : may 20th tornado: how can i help? Martin 05-21-2013, 07:50 AM hey okctalk, let's collect a list of contact numbers and sites where people can volunteer to help... -M kelroy55 05-21-2013, 07:53 AM It looks like the news stations are getting a lot of donations and the Salvation Army is picking them up to distribute. Ginkasa 05-21-2013, 08:19 AM Any suggestions on who best to give a cash donation to? Red Cross? Salavation Army? Somewhere else? One big donation with one place or smaller donations at multiple organizations? BBatesokc 05-21-2013, 08:36 AM Forbes compiled a pretty comprehensive list for those wanting an idea how efficiently their donated money will be used.... The 200 Largest U.S. Charities for 2011 List - Forbes (http://www.forbes.com/lists/2011/14/200-largest-us-charities-11_rank.html) mkjeeves 05-21-2013, 08:50 AM Here's another good reference site: Charity Navigator - America's Largest Charity Evaluator | Home (http://www.charitynavigator.org/) In situations like this I'm personally a fan of the Red Cross. ewoodard70 05-21-2013, 08:54 AM I personally saw the Salvation Army in action after May 3, 1999. They brought the supplies to the affected areas and handed them to those in need. They also provided food as well as water to the homeowners as well as rakes, shovels, gloves and etc... Personally I would like to see money given to them as they make sure the money stays in the affected areas. kelroy55 05-21-2013, 08:56 AM I personally saw the Salvation Army in action after May 3, 1999. Personally I would like to see money given to them as they make sure the money stays in the affected areas. I saw them do the same thing in Joplin. kelroy55 05-21-2013, 09:00 AM Text “storm” to 80888 to make a $10 donation to the Salvation Army and text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation to the Red Cross. Pass along. mkjeeves 05-21-2013, 09:03 AM They are all good people. My experience with the Red Cross was from volunteering at the shelter they ran here when evacuees were bused for a few days during a hurricane. They respond and help out when people lose a house to fire and other issues, not just with big events. I'm sure the Salvation Army does too. Can't go wrong either way. They all have boots on the ground.
