View Full Version : Next generation gaming consoles
Mississippi Blues 06-11-2013, 01:26 AM my initial reaction is to pass, especially if this thing is deemed to be online 24/7, and to spy on you! :)
It's not online 24/7, you just have to connect to the internet once every 24 hours.
jerrywall 06-11-2013, 02:04 AM Now that Sony has announced that PS4 will allow used and borrowed games (basically, no DRM) I'll be curious to see if MS will change course.
That being said.. getting $5 on a $60 game to trade in, or saving $5 on a used game, is not a dealbreaker for me.
jerrywall 06-11-2013, 02:08 AM Oh, and for folks upset on the whole "used games" thing with xbox... tell you what. Bring me $40-50 cash, and I'll give you $5, any day of the week. That's what you're doing with used games right now.
Mississippi Blues 06-11-2013, 03:08 AM Sony's E3 press conference cracked me up when they were mocking the Xbox One. I may go ahead & get both. I was just gonna get the PS4, but Microsooft showed some intriguing games that fit my interests.
Plutonic Panda 06-11-2013, 05:25 AM It's not online 24/7, you just have to connect to the internet once every 24 hours.I think that's incredibly stupid and pointless, however it is not a major deal breaker for me. I've already pre-ordered the new Xbox and will be getting the PS4 as well for a few games coming to it exclusively. As for the used games deal, I think that is good what Microsoft is doing, tbh.
Also, the only reason I could see to make it online only is to combat video game piracy.
Just the facts 06-11-2013, 05:40 AM I think I sense a re-birth of the 'board game' in America's future.
BBatesokc 06-11-2013, 06:21 AM Yeah, XBOX lost me as a customer.... no fan of connect once a day requirements. Believe it or not, there are plenty of people who do not have or want the Internet. I've got it, probably always will, but I don't want it to be a requirement when buying a $500 gaming console and $40-$70 games when one has nothing to do with the other.
Hawk405359 06-11-2013, 09:16 AM I rarely get a game on release, so the no-used-games thing is a pretty big deal breaker for me. While I don't often trade in games myself (I'm a bit of a hoarder that way) The idea that you can't sell a disk that you bought is rather ridiculous to me, and I'd buy a game for $40 over $60 any day of the week. Since the PS4 is also region free and cheaper, I'm leaning towards that one, although I won't be getting either soon since I'm not anything close to a hardcore gamer anymore.
The internet thing isn't a massive dealbreaker, I could always set it up if I needed to, but I don't really play online much so I don't see the point in requiring it.
I'll stick to smartphone games. I am not much of a game player at all, but on those rare occasions when I want to play something, I want to hole up and not talk to people. I don't want online games, I don't want to connect to the internet, I don't want to have people try and verify games or install updates. I just want to play my game and be left alone.
I do realize that I'm not the target market for these kinds of things anymore, but I don't see any way in hell I'd pay that amount of money for a game that requires an internet connection. I don't have an XBox Live account, and don't want one. This has basically guaranteed that if I buy a new game console, it will be the Playstation. But with smartphones, and iPads, and computers being everywhere, I don't think I really need another expensive electronic thing.
Richard at Remax 06-11-2013, 10:52 AM Just a heads up if you want better prices on used games just go through amazon marketplace. I've stopped trading at gamestop, ect. They can't even look you in the eyes when they give you $17 for a game you bought for $60 a week ago.
As for being connected every day I don't see a big deal with it, my computer is always connected so having this one connected is fine. Plus updates for games are always coming out.
Now I did hear that the Kinect or a similar device still has to be connected, is that still the case?

From what I've seen, it does come with the kinect. I actually like that because software developers are more likely to integrate kinect support into games and apps if they know that 100% of the user base has one. They did say you can turn off the kinect though, to avoid the privacy concerns.
While I enjoy the novelty of the concept of walking into the room and saying "xbox on" and everything turning on, at the end of the day it's still just that; a novelty. And one that IMO doesn't outway the concern of an open, listening, mic running in my living room 24 hours a day.
Lord Helmet 06-11-2013, 01:58 PM Definitely jumping ship (Xbox) and getting the PS4. There isn't one exclusive title going to the XBone, and I typically rent from GameFly, which Microsoft won't support. Easy decision.
jerrywall 06-11-2013, 02:02 PM here isn't one exclusive title going to the XBone
That you want, you mean?
Mississippi Blues 06-11-2013, 02:21 PM That you want, you mean?
Probably. There are a number of exclusive games going to the Xbox, which is why I've reconsidered getting the XBone. I'm really into the Roman era, so Ryse: Son of Rome really caught my eye, which is an Xbox exclusive.
blangtang 06-11-2013, 04:25 PM PS4 at $399
Xbox at $499
I'm leaning more heavily to the PS4

If I were to get one on launch day, the PS4 would be it because it's $100 cheaper from the get-go.
SomeGuy 06-11-2013, 07:42 PM I'm probably getting the ps4. Infamous Second Son, Killzone and KHIII you say for the ps4 and PSN+ for 5 dollars a month? Shut up and take my money Sony. I buy most of my games used seeing it's cheaper buying older games at Vintage stock or Game XChange. The Xbox One is surely something I won't be getting, I have a slow router that seems to disconnect my internet often so that's gonna be a problem with the 24 hour thing plus I don't wanna pay 60 bucks for a used disc or a game that's been out for a long while

The connection is just a once every 24 hours or so connection, so doesn't need a constant stream. We don't know much about used games besides the fact the MS and Sony have the same policy. The publishers will control DRM choices. Microsoft Studios has already announced that all of their games will be tradeable/sellable.
So little/misinformation out there right now, I couldn't make a decision yet if I tried, but I"ll probably end up with both, eventually.
kelroy55 06-11-2013, 08:49 PM I'll wait and see if slow sales makes both take the used game restrictions and checking in every day off.
Jon27 06-11-2013, 09:41 PM Has anyone been able to find if the PS4 Eye will be like the Kinect? All I can find is that it will interact with the DS4 controller, but not if it will have free motion sensing like the Kinect.
Mississippi Blues 06-12-2013, 05:49 AM Okay, jerrywall, you were correct. You can re-establish your connection if you go longer than 24 hours without going online. You just can't play offline if you go longer than 24 hours without connecting to the internet, but once you reconnect then you can go offline again.

That's still messed up IMHO. I pay for a game and I can't play it if I don't check in once a day.

I guess because I'm primarily a PC gamer, I've already gotten so used to this that I don't see a big deal. It may just be a symptom of battered wife syndrome though. :)

I'm not a big gamer but I do like a few sports games and a couple others. It's just the idea of having to check in with big brother everyday before I can play that irritates me.

Ah yes. Exactly...funny how sometimes the thought you have in your head doesn't make it to the keyboard!
blangtang 06-19-2013, 05:25 PM NEW YORK (AP) -- Microsoft rolled back a much-criticized requirement that its upcoming Xbox One gaming console be regularly connected to the Internet and made clear that there will be no limitations on sharing games.

looks like they listened at least...
Hawk405359 06-19-2013, 09:21 PM Given the universal negative publicity, it'd be hard not to listen.
Mississippi Blues 06-20-2013, 12:13 AM I'm surprised they changed it so fast. I was expecting them to release as they intended & then change it once they realized it was hurting their sales.

The backlash against MS was so intense and indignant I think even they realized they couldn't wait to change their policy. It was one of those things that started developing a life of its own, one of those things that was just an undercurrent of intensely negative publicity for them. And the PSx folks were loving every second of it. That was a double-whammy they couldn't ignore.
The thing that's so stupid about it is that the backlash was entirely predictable, and an outgrowth of such a naked money grab that it shows just how numb MS management is about how the public perceives them. Just a really stupid PR move, and someone with some sense at MS said, "hey, time to cut losses and get past this." They didn't want people talking about DRM and used games rather than the new hardware itself.
Lord Helmet 06-20-2013, 10:23 AM Too late. Already prordered a PS4. I think I'll stick with it.
