View Full Version : The Shack
the_Mont 01-12-2010, 08:25 AM Just noticed this new restaurant going in where Spinozi's was located (63rd, east of Sante Fe). The logo features the states of Oklahoma and Texas, so I am assuming it is a regional restaurant. Anybody heard any info? Sorry if it has already been discussed, I brisked through the last five pages and did not see a thread.
A group from Houston...Seafood and Steaks, very casual. I think one of the owners is part of the Laundry's family.
OKCMallen 01-12-2010, 05:25 PM Do we have any more info like a website or anything?

Couldn't see any fine print. This thread is the first topic that comes up on a Google search. And I couldn't find The Shack listed as a restaurant on the Landry's Restaurant site.
Floyd's Cajun Seafood and Texas Steakhouse (http://floydscajun.com/)
claudersmonth 01-20-2010, 04:08 PM I saw the sign and was curious so I went by. Talked to a older lady that was there a few weekends ago, said her boyfriend from Texas who managed Floyds in Houston was opening it with the guy from Floyds. Also said hes turning the bar into a boat and will be having fresh seafood brought in once, maybe twice a week from the Gulf of Texas. Spinozis was a dump, maybe this place will not be as bad.
cherrysmile8 01-25-2010, 10:46 AM Ya Spinozis was terrible!!! But the guy who owns the place now is really taking care of it. I havent been by there in a couple weeks, but the inside is totally different. Like new floors, a MUCH MUCH MUCH larger kitchen, and then the layout is pretty different too. Like the bar isnt awkwardly in the middle anymore, (if you've ever been its where the old stage used to be) :) It should open around march :) you should definently come by and try it out!
the_Mont 04-13-2010, 01:13 PM Looks like The Shack is now open.

Passed by there last week, looks nowhere near completed. But I could be wrong.
onthestrip 04-13-2010, 08:32 PM I saw Big Truck Tacos tweeting about going there last night. They said good things about it and had a twitpic of some good looking crawfish.

This is the menu I found on Facebook.
jbkrems 04-14-2010, 07:38 AM And now it is no longer there!
unclefrank58 04-14-2010, 10:42 AM Went Sunday, the boiled crawfish were fresh and tasted great. The po-boy was the best I have had in a while and I frequent Cajun places all the time when I am in Houston. Definitely recommend trying it. Really looking forward to when they get their patio finished.
SoonerQueen 05-02-2010, 02:01 AM My son and I went to the restaurant Saturday night after the movies. I had read the menu but was unsure what to order because I'm not a big Cajun fan. He ordered the plate with catfish and fried shrimp, fries, and a side salad not included with the meal, and he ate every bite. I, on the other hand ordered grilled shrimp and shack fries and a salad. The waiter gave me veggies instead of fries which was ok, and the salad was good. After eating 2 shrimps my nose was running and my throat was burning. Just a little too spicy hot for me. So they made me up some shrimp that didn't have any seasoning and it was delicious. The people were really nice, and if you like Cajun food, I'd recommend this place.
dismayed 05-03-2010, 09:12 PM I am having a lot of trouble picturing the area, and Google Street View didn't help much either. Are there any notable landmarks or businesses near the restaurant?
Edmond Earl 05-04-2010, 06:57 AM Just west of Broadway Extension
metro 05-04-2010, 09:30 AM It's the old Spinozi's building, near Lee off NW 63rd
MrBojangles 05-04-2010, 11:53 AM Went there last week. It is real nice, food was awesome. The owner has family here, that's the reason he opened up in OKC. His family owns the other place in Houston. So the way I understood, it only 2 of 2, family owned. Was still waiting to get his liquor license, so had beer only.
Edmond Earl 05-05-2010, 08:36 PM Had lunch yesterday. Tried the grilled tilapia and gumbo. Both were excellent. The owner came around and introduced himself, very nice guy, offered free oysters to try (excellent). The place is totally cleaned up and remodeled. Beer only now, three more weeks to liquor liscence. Overall I would recommend it.
went there for lunch on saturday. wife had the crab cakes and loved them. i had the chicken creole. just the right amount of spice, not over hot. my daughter the chicken fried chicken, which she really liked and had plenty left to take home. we'll definitely be going back again.
MParker 03-28-2013, 10:21 AM It was a pleasant surprise to find this place called The Shack off of 62nd Street. I have recently moved to OK from the East Coast and The Shack has fresh seafood that is reminiscent of home ; )
If anyone has time to go for Sunday brunch, try the Seafood Fondue and the Crab Cake Eggs Benedict. (mmmmmm)
kelroy55 03-28-2013, 11:14 AM I think that's in the place that used to be Spinozi's.
Martin 03-28-2013, 11:21 AM I think that's in the place that used to be Spinozi's.
that's the one... can't remember what it was called prior to spinozi's, though. i seem to remember it was some kind of biker bar. -M
ctchandler 03-28-2013, 12:17 PM It was a biker bar, Strokers Full Throttle and after that, Scooters and Hooters. Before that it was Beasley's Barbecue.

BBatesokc 03-28-2013, 02:10 PM Eaten there a few times for lunch. Not bad to good. I just don't like fried seafood, so my options are pretty limited.

Spinozi's tried to get a bike night going but was never too successful, too many other ones around town during the week.
MustangGT 03-29-2013, 09:35 AM Food is pretty good. I tend to like fried seafood so I have much greater options there. I was so glad to see a decent business go in there as the location had been burdened with less than desireable clientelle when Scooters and Hooters was the tenant.

Nice try, The Shack...

"less than desireable clientelle" Sorry if I lowered the property values by going to those previous places.

Ahh, look to the bright side. Nobody slapped a sticker on yer window nor a flyer under your wiper or door handle.
betts 03-30-2013, 08:51 AM I remember being told this is owned/operated by a member of the Landry family. It's on my list of places to try but I don't go that far north for dinner very often.
ThomPaine 03-30-2013, 09:16 AM Okay food and pretty good service the times I've been in. Prices seem a bit high for lunch, and it's pretty heavy, so look for a post meal napping spot.

We love this place. We had dinner there last weekend. Love their fried crawfish.
We heard it was owned by a member of the Pappas family, so who knows. I guess it has some connection to a big Houston restaurant family.
soonerguru 04-03-2013, 02:22 AM It's pretty good, but as Betts said, it's practically in Edmond, so we rarely go that far away for meal.
Never quite understood the raving fans' viewpoints, though I've tried to, and I'm still willing to change my mind for the better.

NW 63rd and Broadway is "that far north"..."practically in Edmond" Huh who woulda thought??? I bet this characterization would surprise NH residents, Village residents too.

My thought as well. I couldn't tell if that's sarcasm or not. However, if Soonerguru lives on the south side or in Norman, I guess I see the point... for a centralized resident, it's not far out there at all.

It surprised this Edmond resident too. To us, from our part of Edmond, it's like almost going downtown for dinner!
They're opening another location 'almost in Edmond' at May & Memorial -- in the old Casablanca space.

HAHAHA Just as far away as the first location only in a different direction.

Even though I live in Edmond, its the same distance for us too since we are on the northeast side of Edmond. It's about 15 miles to either location.
Teo9969 06-13-2013, 02:38 PM Oh no!
This building caught fire just a bit ago :-(

There's also some space available in Classen Curve...
Jettmiester 06-14-2013, 12:44 AM Kind of ironic, moving to a new location, and oops... Fire! In the old location. And I've never heard of this Casablanca place before that they are moving into.

If you read the comments on Urbanspoon (http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/46/1620056/restaurant/Quail-Springs/Casablancas-OKC-Oklahoma-City) there was some indecision as to whether Casablanca was a restaurant or a church.
Bill Robertson 06-14-2013, 08:49 AM Kind of ironic, moving to a new location, and oops... Fire! In the old location. And I've never heard of this Casablanca place before that they are moving into. The building had been a couple of other failures before Casablanca. Nothing made it more than a couple of months. It's been empty for a long time. I had to take my wife by it the other day because she didn't believe me that there was a restaurant behind Abuelo's. Even though we go to Abuelo's and had passed by the building lot's of times. It's an odd, not very visible, location. Maybe since The Shack already has a following they can make it work.
RadicalModerate 06-14-2013, 09:29 AM My wife and I dined at Casablanca once . . . I thought it was pretty good and nothing like the experiences described on Urbanspoon. We must have visited while the next to the last owners were running it. It reminded me of a cross between PF Changs, Charlestons and Bravo. Later, she and a friend went there for lunch and the vibe she described was like, "What are YOU two doing in here?" I think they decided to go to Abuelo's or Johnny Carinos or somewhere else.
Anonymous. 06-14-2013, 11:18 AM So is the "new" (now only) location of the Shack the building that is being worked on where Dennys used to be? Next to Taco Bell and Johnnies?
LakeEffect 06-14-2013, 11:45 AM So is the "new" (now only) location of the Shack the building that is being worked on where Dennys used to be? Next to Taco Bell and Johnnies?
No, it's behind Abuelo's, accessed off of Memorial, west of May.
LakeEffect 06-14-2013, 11:46 AM The only time I went to Casanblanca, it was myself and my wife at one table, and Chief Citty and his wife (then City Auditor) at another. Quiet restaurant, good food, horrible location and marketing.
OkieHornet 06-14-2013, 11:50 AM wasn't casablanca owned by a jimmys egg franchisee?

The old Denny's is gonna be S&B's Burgers
Anonymous. 06-14-2013, 02:24 PM Ah gotcha, forgot about that little location behind Abuelos.
