icecold 03-13-2013, 04:46 PM If this is what I think it is, the little corner store with the restaurant in back, good for them. Excellent Guatemalan food!
Sounds like you are right. Best tortilla I have ever had.
trousers 03-13-2013, 07:06 PM This place is some tasty business.
pickles 03-14-2013, 12:28 PM It's great - happy to see they'll be expanding.
This place has been operating as a little store with a cafeteria-style restaurant in the back, but they are remodeling to become a pure restaurant and should be close to finished if they aren't already.
This is at 1800 NW 16th, at the far west end of the Plaza District.
The food gets generally great reviews.

icecold 11-05-2013, 04:36 PM Have eaten there only once but the Pesoli I had was really good. Also, they serve the best tortillas I have ever had.
Roger S 11-05-2013, 05:06 PM I need to go give it a try... I haven't had any Guatemalen food since Cocina Guatelinda closed.
They make their own tortillas and are quite reasonable, so those two things alone are good reasons to visit.
Roger S 11-05-2013, 05:35 PM The hand made tortillas are what I miss about Cocina Guatelinda.... They were made from corn masa but they were thicker than what you get from the Okie Mex places and really soaked up some sauce or broth.
foodiefan 11-05-2013, 05:53 PM great food. . .and, unless the weather is nasty, close enough to walk to Lyric!!
Looks like this place is getting ready to reopen and will now be called Chiltepes:
Chiltepes Latin Cuisine (http://chiltepesrestaurant.com/)
trousers 11-22-2013, 11:13 AM I've only ate there two or three times but it was always very good. Not sure what I had. More of a "I point and they plate" kind of ordering system when I was there.
On Facebook they just announced they are closing soon and won't open again until February so they can complete their interior renovations.
https://www.facebook.com/ChiltepesRestaurant
Just heard their re-opening has been delayed until April 11th.
Also, they will add some Mexican items to their menu.
betts 02-25-2014, 09:59 PM Another great dining option on the Plaza. I also got an e-mail from a real estate agent touting Classen-Ten-Penn. who would have thought that possible a few years ago?
Looks like they are getting very close to re-opening.
Just posted some photos of their new menu items on their FB page:

warreng88 03-17-2014, 10:49 AM At the state of the Plaza meeting a few weeks ago, the owner said they were shooting for a mid-April opening, but it seems like the renovations are going a lot faster than they originally thought it would. I am excited to get down there and try some Guatemalan food.
trousers 03-17-2014, 11:14 AM I hope they keep hand making the tortillas the way they used to. May be difficult with the demand they will surely have once they open.
Urbanized 03-17-2014, 12:03 PM ¡Muy auténtico!
Urbanized 03-17-2014, 12:06 PM Don't try talkin back to me in Spanish. I have no idea what I even typed there.
They just posted they will reopen on May 9th.
They have a new website with complete menu:
Chiltepes Latin Cuisine (http://www.chiltepesrestaurant.com/)

OMG, that looks very interesting and it's a huge selection. It's interesting that they decided not to put prices on the website. Maybe that will come later.
Roger S 03-25-2014, 08:18 AM I saw papusas on the menu and that's all that mattered to me.... Haven't had any since Cocina Guatelinda closed their doors.
John Knight 04-14-2014, 09:22 AM I snapped a picture while at Live on the Plaza Friday night.

According to their website, the revised re-opening date is May 9th.
soonerguru 04-19-2014, 10:21 PM Looking forward to this.
John Knight 05-03-2014, 09:32 AM New signage is up!

Nice!
Website still says they plan to re-open May 9th, which is this Friday.
warreng88 05-05-2014, 08:59 AM Not sure if you can tell from John Knight's picture, but they have a pretty descent sized patio area that encompasses just south of the Plaza district sign on the corner to the western edge and goes down to the south before reconnecting to the restaurant on the east side.
NWOKCGuy 05-05-2014, 09:13 AM I saw papusas on the menu and that's all that mattered to me.... Haven't had any since Cocina Guatelinda closed their doors.
I sure do miss Guatelinda.
OKC plaza 05-06-2014, 02:54 PM Just talked to the owner, and he said they HAVE to be open by June. I asked why June was the deadline and he said "for the World Cup!"
They are also lending us their patio/donating food for our Friends of the Plaza (http://www.plazadistrict.org/support/) VIP area for LIVE this Friday!

So, they are not necessarily going to open this Friday?

No, looks like June is the new goal.

trousers 05-24-2014, 09:00 AM I thought I saw a Chiletepes van yesterday next door to their building?
Didn't stop as I had just left Rafita's.
From their Facebook page:
Good evening everyone sorry I havent been able to post or update here been real busy trying to open up! Sadly we are not going to be able to open up tomorrow but we will keep u updated on when we open! The restaurant is up and ready to open just inspections have been holding us back as soon as all inspections are over with we will open but we just need a couple more so it should be in these next couple of weeks! Thank you all for your patience and bearing with us!
warreng88 06-23-2014, 12:45 PM Drive by last night and they have a sign out with an opening date of June 27th.
That's Friday!
Can't wait to hear what people say about the improvements and menu.
It's a pretty big space and will bring much more life to the Plaza.
Urbanized 06-23-2014, 03:46 PM I'm excited about this one. Those food pics look fantastic.
Bullbear 06-23-2014, 03:51 PM its about time!.. I ate there frequently before the remodel. I haven't been eating at the truck so I miss this place!.. the bright side is a have discovered Rafitas while they were closed for remodel.. not the same food obviously but another great place to eat. I am excited about the opening!

Mr. Cotter 06-26-2014, 01:47 PM This makes me so happy. A neighborhood changes, and a long time tenant adapts to the change rather than being pushed out. Everyone wins.
^
Yes, absolutely!
Really a nice story and I bet they continue their great success.
Somebody needs to get over there this weekend and provide a full report!
Roger S 06-26-2014, 02:13 PM Somebody needs to get over there this weekend and provide a full report!
If they get opened for lunch tomorrow. I plan on being there.... I haven't had any Guatemalen cuisine since Cocina Guatelinda closed their doors.
Bullbear 06-26-2014, 02:32 PM I use to eat at Guatalinda often as well and you wont be disapointed in Chiltepes. I plan on going to Chiltepes tomorrow and if not then at some point over the weekend.
Roger S 06-26-2014, 03:08 PM Well now there is a possibility we may be running up to try Revolve Pizza for lunch tomorrow. So it's either going to be Friday, depending on what others decide, or Monday... Regardless I've been waiting anxiously for Chiltepes to re-open and it will probably make it's way into my regular lunch rotation.

Great point. I met the owner and his son at the State of the Plaza meeting in April and they couldn't have been nicer and happier about expanding. They loved that people in the area liked the idea and were excited about the guatemalan/mexican cuisine as opposed to something more familiar to the people of the area like burgers, BBQ or just another sandwich place. I have a feeling this will add a lot to the area and will help 16th street expand more to the west.
Roger S 06-27-2014, 01:16 PM Some co-workers and I tried Chiltepes for lunch. They did an incredible job remodeling that building and the food was great. Think I liked it even more than I did Cocina Guatelinda.
They are not serving the full menu until July 11th but they still had a good selection of food to try.

Bullbear 06-27-2014, 02:45 PM Good to hear.. before the expansion many times they wouldn't have Papusas until after 4.. glad they had them at lunch!
Urban Pioneer 07-08-2014, 09:06 AM A couple of us OKC Talker's went there Friday night. They were still in "soft opening" mode but the food was awesome and the atmosphere a perfect addition to the Plaza. We hung out on the patio. The sound system was good and the renovation done with care.
I had the Pollo la Crema. It was great. Will email Pete some pics.
Urbanized 07-08-2014, 09:09 AM I had lunch there yesterday. Really enjoyed it.
Roger S 07-08-2014, 09:18 AM I had lunch there yesterday. Really enjoyed it.
I was there for lunch yesterday too and I could see some improvements over when I was there for their first day of the soft opening.
Can't wait until they roll out the full menu.
Urban Pioneer 07-08-2014, 09:19 AM It really is a perfect addition to the Plaza District. I should say "re-addition" since they have simply shifted from a back room Guatemalan diner to a street fronting promenade.
They also had a great selection of Mexican, Spanish, and Guatemalan beers that you won't find at Saints, The Mule, or Empire. Quite frankly, beers I haven't seen at other logical restaurants with such food.
This all sounds awesome. And something truly unique.
Roger S 07-08-2014, 09:37 AM I have to say one of the biggest improvements I noticed from their opening day to yesterday was in the horchata...... The first day it was a little bland but yesterday I would rate it up there with some of the best I have had in Oklahoma City.
Yesterday I was also served some queso and black bean dip that we weren't served the first day. The black bean dip was a little thicker than I like and the queso a little watery but both had decent flavor.
The cup of chicken soup you get with the setup is nice too.... I don't eat much soup in the summer months but I'm tempted to give their caldo de res a try on my next visit.
amaesquire 07-09-2014, 02:48 PM Ate there last night and it was delicious. Still a limited menu, but the service was fantastic!
Plutonic Panda 07-09-2014, 03:12 PM Just curious, how do you pronounce the name?
Roger S 07-09-2014, 03:15 PM I pronounce it like..... chill-teh-pay
