They choose to make that decision while believe the universe works out in a way that they are being taken care of, but still don't have the faith to cross the road without looking. The (former) Great Lakes of the West
During the last glacial maximum, about 21,000 years ago, the arid western part of the USA was full of gigantic lakes that would rival the modern midwestern Great Lakes. In fact, from where I write this right now in Salt Lake City, I would have been over 100 feet underwater. For many years, the cause was linked to climate without much hard evidence.

Dive into the past
When the government decided to build a hydroelectric dam in 1959 on the Xin An river, the Lion city of Shi Cheng (once the capital of Zhejiang province in China) was buried under the rising waters of lake Quiandao to a depth ranging between 25 and 40 metres. The city is around 2,000 years old, being inaugurated during the Han dynasty (25-200CE),and filled with old buildings, palaces and temples. Ironically, considering the ravages of both the cultural revolution in the 1960's and rampant modernisation related destruction throughout the country, it remains the best preserved ancient city in the country, giving us a glimpse into a past China now vanished upon the land's surface. It is now possible to dive and explore as a tourist. The city has 5 gates with towers, and is the size of 62 football fields.

One of the most famous viewpoints in Yosemite National Park, its granitic mass rises to 2,199 metres on the south wall of the glacial valley offering a view over the a huge swath of the valley. The talus slopes at the bottom contain erratic rocks brought from higher up in the Sierras by the grinding ice. Most of the rock below consists of boulders of the same quartz monzonite that makes up Half Dome, combined with smaller proportions of a second granite and fragments of yellow quartzite and schist from Mt Clarke 12km away. In this stunning photo the plane of our galaxy seems to float above the bare granite domes.

Plutonic Panda 06-10-2014, 05:58 PM These watches are beautiful, if you several hundred grand lying around.
Think 12 or 24 hour watches are a little short-sighted?
The Midnight Planétarium timepiece tracks the position of the six planets visible from Earth. Each of them are independently controlled for precise tracking at any given time and their true orbital speeds are represented. Aside from keeping you updated on planetary positioning, it also functions as a regular watch with the shooting star indicating the time in hours and minutes.

notice how these "civilized" countries have the most shootings. Makes you wonder if there is a correlation between mental health problems among the absence of other problems most in advanced societies will never have. Possibly other factors like video games, movies, and music might also be a factor as well. Another note is the lack of issues and isolation that is made possible by this society is also interesting.
Of course instead of school shootings, there is extreme poverty, kids walking around in the street killing people without consequence, bombs going off, etc. Perhaps we need some excitement to keep this country "civilized".
For a movie, The Dark Night sure made some good points.

Self-Sustaining Urban Ecosystem Discovered In Abandoned Building In Thailand
http://www.sciencedump.com/sites/www.sciencedump.com/files/imagecache/img/fish-extra-2_0.jpg
Thailand’s capital is a vibrant city full of surprises, and this abandoned shopping mall in old town Bangkok is certainly no exception. Tucked away behind an unassuming looking gate is New World shopping mall which burned down back in 1999. Because it doesn’t have a roof anymore, the basement is flooded all year round.
At some stage, a person started introducing Koi and Catfish into the basement. The population thrived and now this abandoned building has transitioned into a self-sustained, urban aquarium!
Photographer and professional cook Jesse Rockwell was lucky enough to find out where this hidden gem lies and took some snaps of it, it's pretty cool.

I keep hoping that that sort of tech starts trickling down to mainstream cars, much like on-board navigation has.

It's a nice step toward better driving. I keep my gps down low where I don't have to look away from what's in front of me.
Plutonic Panda 09-11-2014, 04:02 PM This is a cool gif of ants forming a chain to haul away a millipede
Ants Form Daisy-Chain To Haul Away Millipede
Scientists were boggled when they witnessed, for the first time, a colony of Leptogenys ants in Southeast Asia forming a daisy chain to carry much larger prey: A millipede. Though cooperative ant behaviour is well-documented, including forming life rafts in floods, this chaining behavior is quite different. Instead of carrying prey directly in their mandibles, the ants are forming organized lines by linking their mandibles to the preceding ant’s abdomen (gaster). Scientists are struggling to understand this previously undocumented type of cooperative transport.

Plutonic Panda 09-15-2014, 04:16 PM Gravitational Waves
I have found this to be extremely interesting
Possibly the biggest science story of the year—or the most embarrassing slip up—was the claim to have found evidence of a gravitational wave from the birth of the universe. Meanwhile, the search for gravitational waves from more local events, such as neutron stars in tight orbits, continues.
But what are gravitational waves? The first thing is to distinguish them from gravity waves, which are altogether different. Gravity waves include such familiar concepts as water waves on the ocean. They occur when something disturbs a fluid and gravity draws it back, creating an oscillation around the mean level.
Gravitational waves, on the other hand, are altogether more exotic. Their existence relies on the concept of spacetime, as described by Einstein in his general theory of relativity. To us it looks like the world is three-dimensional, while time seems to be something utterly different. However, Einstein envisaged these as a single topological space.

ctchandler 09-16-2014, 07:13 PM I thought this was interesting. And of course, my friend from London had to get her "catty" remark in. She was a teacher/principal (officially called "head teacher") and retired several years ago.

We had some Univ news today as well, that our colleges are crowing about.
Out of the top 6 universities in the world, 4 are British (English actually - take that Scotland!) including
2 in London. The other 2 are American - MIT top and Harvard 4th.
1. MIT.
2. Joint second Cambridge and Imperial College London.
4. Harvard.
5. Joint fifth Oxford and University College London.
19 of the top 100 are British and 28 American. Not bad for a country our size.
We always punch above our weight in Further Education. Must be something to do with
the preparation our students get when they're younger from our brilliant teachers!!!

Teo9969 09-17-2014, 12:48 AM 21 out of the Top 25 and 61 of the Top 100 countries are all English speaking. This is not particularly surprising because college (or as the rest of the English speaking world says: university) makes a particularly excellent place for international students to work on their English.
That being said, our government should find a way to incentivize some of these students who come to these top-tier universities to stay and work in the country after they graduate. There are a lot of ways you could develop a program, but for instance, a school could apply to the government to be part of the program, having to meet certain standards as an academic institution (or even a specific college in a particularly university), and upon acceptance would be eligible for small grants from the government to take international students. Those international students could then be eligible for a work-visa and tax credits to stay in the United States if they graduate having met certain criteria (honors or cum laude or whatever).
It would be a great way to encourage the brightest students of the world to come to our universities and for our universities to make a more concerted effort to get the brightest students in the world studying and eventually contributing to our society.
Plutonic Panda 09-26-2014, 01:43 PM This is pretty incredible!
Scientists make quantum leap, teleport data from light to matter
We're one step closer to creating the Ansible communicator in "Ender's Game," the warp drive envisioned by Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre and a "Star Trek"-style Transporter.
Or we can at least keep thinking that while scientists do the hard, incremental physics required to keep us dreaming of those kinds of future advancements. This time the progress comes from a research team out of the lab of Professor Nicolas Gisin in the physics department at the University of Geneva.
The team achieved teleportation of the quantum state of a photon -- in this case, it's known as the photon's polarization -- to a crystal-encased photon more than 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) away. The distance breaks the previous record of 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) set 10 years ago by the same team using the method. This marks the latest success in a series of experiments the group, led by physicist Félix Bussières, has been conducting over the last decade in an effort to better understand quantum data transfer with ever-newer technology.
The results, which were achieved in March, were published in the journal Nature Photonics on September 21.
In this particular experiment, the researchers stored one photon in a crystal, essentially creating a solid-state memory bank. They sent another photon of a different wavelength 25 kilometers away through optical fiber, whereupon they had it interact with a third photon. Because the first two photons were entangled -- a quantum property meaning the particles could speak to another across an infinite distance -- the interaction sent the data to the photo stored in the memory bank, where the team was able to retrieve it.
