Which is most likely more accurate? OGS or USGS?

I think there are slightly different ways they calculate the magnitude. It's been a few years since I've read about it.

Now we get to see if there are going to any aftershocks or if this was a foreshock.

Yikes! A pleasant thought. :(

Actually (and unfortunately) it could be both as those two things are not mutually exclusive.

Imagine, during tomorrow's game, that right after KD slams down a thunderous dunk, a 5.5 quake unleashes.

The Pacers would probably just give up at that point.

Yukong,
It was a loud sound, I'm not sure it sounded like an explosion, a little different sound but very loud. My first thought was an explosion but in about a second it was obviously an earthquake. The difference between your experience and mine is distance. I live 9 miles Northwest of Jones and the epicenter was 4.5 miles Northwest of Jones.
C. T.
This was more a wave action. Two very different experiences.

We're at Twin Peaks watching Bedlam. It shook dust off of all the high wall decorations, neon signs and rattled all the bottles at the bar.

My daughter lives in Jones and said it was a good thing she was already down on the floor wrapping Christmas presents instead of standing up.

Ljbab,
Your daughter and I had the same experience, the epicenter was right between us. I'm glad I was sitting down, with my current health (and age), I'm not very steady. I think I would have hit the floor for sure!

I didn't feel or hear the earthquake while watching Bedlam on TV in Stillwater. Some from Stillwater have reported something, though. BEAT OU!

In North OKC/West Edmond, I heard the crack, followed by a rumble to the east, then felt the shaking. I have never experienced the stages of an earthquake like that before.

SoonerDave

Definitely felt it here in SW OKC , but not nearly as strong as others. Based on the posts here, it sounds like the more you go west and north, the stronger it was.

Someone just tweeted that yes...OGS and USGS are measuring the magnitude differently, so that is why there will usually be a discrepancy.

Snonado is next. Just wait.

Didn't feel a thing near Lake Hefner, but my sister on the NW side of Edmond felt it enough to call me, and apparently her dog and cat both bolted from the living room. Feel like I missed out on a good one. I was practicing violin with the TV on and the laundry running so I'm pretty sure unless a car drove through my house, I wouldn't hear or feel anything lol.

We are well west of SE 12th and the only way we knew about it here was because folks lit up my lovely's FB feed, and that prompted me to sign in here to look for more info. Which of course I found. We miss most of these events, including today. Not sure why.

Latest Swarm Of OK Earthquakes Could Be Tied To Lake Arcadia (http://www.news9.com/story/23899666/latest-swarm-of-ok-earthquakes-could-be-tied-to-lake-acardia)

Obviously this can't be the cause and here's why: The colder it gets, the closer the water gets to turning to ice. Ice is obviously lighter than water (put an ice cube in a glass of water and watch it float.) Ergo, the water is lighter than it is in the summer so Lake Arcadia, itself, can't possibly be the cause of the most recent spate of earthquakes and aftershocks. Science Rules, Mythology Drools.

Anyone up for doing some random dunking of people and ducks out in that area to make sure no witches are behind this?

If you haven't read the comments on the News 9 story they are priceless.

And that article is a month old in case someone missed it.

I read them. They were.

Another theory is that the Lake is covering an ancient Indian burial ground and the spirits are restless.
Not Native American Indians, but Sub-Continental Indians who were on a mysterious mission to the New World.

RM,
Right! I don't know how to copy a Youtube clip, so here's a link. Bill Cosby - Noah - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bputeFGXEjA). I wish I could get just the one word (Right) clipped for this post.

Are you kidding me? Ice is lighter?

Lighter . . . Less Dense . . . Whatever . . .
In any case, not the cause of the recent spate of earthquakes.
(now . . . if it were a spurt of earthquakes . . . on the other hand)

Ice is less dense than water, so for a given volume of ice or water, the ice will have less mass.

No kidding.

A lake that freezes loses no mass.

Yeah, you're joking about a frozen lake being somehow lighter than the same lake, fully thawed?

This is pretty basic stuff. Ice is less dense than water typically unless you are able to ensure there is no trapped air in the ice. How often does that happen? Now, you aren't going to lose water itself as it freezes, it is just going to expand and spread out.

We could probably assume that as a lake freezes, it is spreading the weight out over a greater area. As far as the lake having any impact on the earthquakes, who knows.
