View Full Version : Cow Calf-Hay
BBatesokc 08-25-2010, 02:53 PM The brothers that own/operate the City Bites chain of sandwich shops have a new burger place in Edmond. It's called The Cow Calf-Hay and all their burgers are a full 1/2 pound of certified Angus Beef. If you're thinking, "yeah I tried the Mad Cow place they had before," this is much better.
Went there today for lunch with a party of 5 and we used to all go to Nic's and this was as good in my opinion. I did the grilled onion burger with bacon and onion rings.
Located on the SE corner of 33 and Broadway behind the Jamba Juice location.
Odd hours right now while the owners work it themselves to make sure it's done right.... Mon-Thurs 10:30-2:30 and Fri 10:30-8pm.
If you're in the area it's worth s try.
metro 08-25-2010, 03:46 PM Thanks for the lead, but what's with the name?
BBatesokc 08-25-2010, 05:44 PM Apparently there was an "issue" with the Mad Cow name, and this is someone's idea of cute. I don't really get it, but the food is really good. I hope it stays that way.
kevinpate 08-25-2010, 05:48 PM Thanks for the lead, but what's with the name?
A cutesy (to someone anyway) play on Cafe
redrunner 08-25-2010, 05:59 PM I saw the Cow Calf-Hay last week when I was dropping someone off at Firestone and the exterior signage is quite gaudy which didn't make me want to eat there. But I'm sure the food speaks for itself. Maybe if they come out on Groupon I'll check them out.
bluedogok 08-25-2010, 09:51 PM I thought Mad Cow was pretty good, I was disappointed when they closed it. I also like the Curly's that was in that location before.

same here
BBatesokc 08-27-2010, 05:02 PM I was told they couldn't secure financing with that name. Odd but I trust my source.
BBatesokc 04-08-2011, 07:30 AM This place is definitely not a little secret anymore. Going on a Friday night is out for me - line out the door. Went for lunch again a couple of days ago, burgers and rings were wonderful as always. They were experimenting with a vodka spiked ketchup on a burger that was pretty good. I love that there is a real alternative to Nic's that you can go to and actually find a seat and not smell like grease when you leave.

Absolutely. LOVED Curley's. Mad Cow was good too from what i remember. While a cute name, think the Mad Cow disease thing was just too close to home for many people and they said...never mind. LOL
Reminds me of the classic case of Chevy Novas not selling well done in South America. Would you buy a car that was named "Won't Go" on it and featured in all of the advertising etc? LOL
They have the menu posted on their Facebook page:

When I saw the original post date of this thread and that you replied many months later, figured it was about it closing. I always assumed it closed down a while back because I only go by it in the evenings or on a saturday. I'll have to hit it up on a friday night sometime soon.
cjohnson.405 04-11-2011, 08:54 PM My wife and I tried Cow Calf-Hay and thought it was great as well. Service was excellent.
BBatesokc 04-14-2011, 11:55 AM This Tweet just went out....... YES!
cowcalfhay The Cow Calf-Hay
NEW HOURS STARTING MAY 3rd! @cowcalfhay will be open Tues-Sat from 11am-8pm. No you're not dreaming, this tweet is REAL!

This is great news. We love that place, but we rarely around to go for lunch. Only being open on Friday nights really limited our ability to enjoy their great burgers. Although, I'm sure my cholesterol level and my doctor will not be happy.
Dustin 04-19-2011, 05:48 PM Damn... I really wanted to try this place out today..
MEvans 04-20-2011, 08:46 AM Tried to go on Saturday, but they weren't open.

Yeah, not till May. The brothers who own City Bites actually work this restaurant themselves, so the hours reflect their schedule. This is more of their pet project and it has proven a success. Speaking of pets, they have the coolest collect of humongous turtles I have ever seen at their homes.

They have come a long way since the days of when the City Bites on 23rd between Rockwell and Council was their "winter income" for their landscaping business.
Dustin 04-20-2011, 10:36 PM May 3rd needs to get here now.. I really want to try this place out! I have heard great things about it from friends.
Dustin 05-10-2011, 09:51 PM I tried this place about a week ago and was pretty impressed. The fries are nothing special but the burgers are fantastic!
Barry Luxton 07-03-2011, 05:48 PM What's better here, the fries or the rings? I've got a lunch appointment at the CCH on Wednesday and I'm trying to decide which to order with my burger.
Dustin 07-03-2011, 07:21 PM Get the onion rings and come back and tell us how they were.
AFwife04 07-04-2011, 07:18 AM I must have went on an off day. I didn't think the service was that great. The burger was good, but very greasy and the fries were nothing special. It is a small restaurant and as a result they don't have very many high chairs and they day I went the 2 they had were already in use. I had to bring my one year old in a stroller which was a less than pleasant experience. I would be willing to try again, though.

So the rings, then?
Debzkidz 07-05-2011, 07:45 AM The onion rings are great.

Of course! I don't know why I didn't get them in the first place. I prefer rings to fries.
Barry Luxton 07-06-2011, 04:43 PM Bomb diggity.
BBatesokc 12-14-2012, 04:17 PM Just got word that the owners of City Bites are opening their second Cow Calf-Hay location - this time in downtown OKC where the former Harvey's Cafe was most recently located (212 N. Harvey Ave.).
Opening set for March 1, 2013.
shawnw 12-15-2012, 11:50 AM I think this is good though I hope their hours are decent. I'm disappointed that their other urban core location (23rd city bites) decided to close everyday at 3 due to the recent robbery. it's part of doing business in an urban area.

I think this is a great addition downtown. I love their burgers.

These are great burgers. Basically the "Nic's Grille of Edmond" but with better hours. The only improvement could be on the buns. They have great beef, but if they had homemade buns it would be even better.

I've eaten at Cow Calf-Hay and can honestly say I enjoyed the burger, and even the fries, and I'm not much of a fry person.
But the Nic's of Edmond.... Not hardly!
betts 12-17-2012, 09:36 AM I like the fact that successful restaurants in other places seem to see downtown or Midtown as a logical, and sometimes the first, place to put another restaurant. My dining options are expanding exponentially, it seems.
BBatesokc 05-15-2013, 07:18 AM Should be open within days. Got notice of a private soft opening this week! Love me some Cow Calf Hay!
BBatesokc 06-17-2013, 06:32 AM Been open about two weeks now. Eaten there twice. Nice addition to the area. The remodel is nicely done - casual and clean with plenty of seating.
Been twice at noon and neither time was 'packed' but busy with immediate seating available.
The onion burgers are good and I really liked the pizza (new item, not available at the Edmond location) with a fried crust. The burgers are what you'd expect from a burger and the pizza will probably have its fans and its critics.

Hmmmm... Fried pizza crust you say? I say the only thing that might be better than fried pizza crust would be bacon infused fried pizza crust.... I'll have to give this a try!

Like the way your mind works.
Larry OKC 06-18-2013, 03:55 PM Several items sound promising (like the FFA Burger), but did notice this under the Chicken & Pork section of the menu (where Pork isn't an option...almost)

Breaded Chicken Sandwich...Hand breaded chicken served on grill toasted bun...It's like the filet-mignon cut of pork. Hand breaded deep fried or grilled to perfection, served on grill toased bun, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo.

The FFA is really good - but I have found its best when shared and only half consumed at any one sitting. Its a burger that stays with you the rest of the day.
Plutonic Panda 01-01-2015, 09:41 PM cow
a cow!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?
rezman 01-03-2015, 12:06 AM I really like the Farm House, and their fries are pretty good when fresh and hot, but average when they cool off. I had the onion rings one time and thought they were ok. Haven't ordered them since. My wife's favorite is the Maui Cowi, and my daughters is the Blackjack. Tonight we stopped by and I had the Ultimate Chicken Sandwich.... Very tasty and I will definately order again. The wife tried the Coo-Coo Nest this time, which she enjoyed as well.
