View Full Version : The Mule
BBatesokc 12-20-2012, 06:30 PM Took in The Mule today with my lunch group.
Got there at straight up 12pm and all the tables were full with a few people waiting.
The interior is really cool and has a definite look that is casual and hip. I do wish they had two sets of entry doors to help with the rush of cold air that sweeps in as people come and go. The place had a nice rumble to it, but not too loud. Saw a good mix of people. Lots of suits and slacks, several tables of business women, mostly tables of business casual and even two tables with children.
Our wait was only about 12 minutes for a table and maybe another 15 for our food.
Two of us had the Macaroni Pony (at the suggestion of the waiter). I ordered mine with rings and the other had fries. Our third order was for the special of the day which looked to be some sort of roast beef dip type sandwich.
The sandwiches were incredible - toasted fresh bread, served hot with really tender meat.
The rings were definitely my favorite over the fries - but the fries were still good and they ate every last one. I'd have liked some sort of sauce with my rings however.
The portion to price ratio was a bit off for this to be a regular stop for me. I'd like to have seen the sandwich $1-$2 cheaper. The portion size in my opinion was perfect for one person.
I'll definitely be back!
BoulderSooner 12-21-2012, 04:55 AM went in the other night just after 6 and the place was packed great very diverse crowd from both an age standpoint 20's -50's and 60's and from a style standpoint ..
I had the standard grilled cheese +bacon with tomato soup and our table split the fries cheese curds ...
both were very good and IMHO priced well .... I will say the tomato soup might not have been great as a stand alone but it was perfect for dipped my sandwich
bandnerd 12-21-2012, 08:44 AM Went there for a happy hour/Friday meal last week. Great place, fun atmosphere, nice service. I had the Okie Poutine. It was everything I ever wanted -- fries, cheese curds and white pepper gravy. Spicy, but only enough to get my nose a little worked up, and the fries had an interesting blend of spices on them. We decided that it would be a good place for us to go if we were looking to have a meal with our Friday drinks, and spend a couple more bucks than normal.
Also, as mentioned above, a very mixed crowd. One of my co-workers is around 50 and she said it's a regular haunt for her family, but it was enjoyed by the 20-somethings at my table, too.
RadicalModerate 12-22-2012, 11:14 PM I'm 60 and now I feel more comfortable about giving the place a chance. Plus, I feel a bit guilty about making a jest regarding a place apparently specializing in Upscale Grilled Cheese sandwiches . . . =)
(On the other hand, for most of my life, I have been accused of being "stubborn as a Mule" so . . .)
DeluxeOK 01-15-2013, 12:53 AM I love The Mule, and eat there at least once a week because I work in the Plaza District. Let me tell you about the onion rings: the batter they use must be magical, because the rings are as airy and delicate as a fresh Krispy Kreme. They are utterly delightful.
Also, I just noticed The Classic listed on the appetizers section of the menu - it is just grilled cheese triangles and a small dipping cup of tomato soup. This is my new go-to lunch at just $6.
ctchandler 01-23-2013, 04:54 PM I took an old friend to the Mule today and we both enjoyed it. As previously mentioned, the onion rings were outstanding. It was a little pricey in my opinion but I have to admit at my age (69) I have lost touch with inflation since I don't eat out every day for lunch. I will go back.

OKCPhotog 01-24-2013, 06:39 PM Ate there today and the food was delicious!
ErnestA 01-24-2013, 07:43 PM I love The Mule. I didn't think grilled cheeses and beer would go well together but they do. Not only are they fancier sandwiches, but they are better prepared (crunchy and gooey) than other adult grilled cheeses in town. The interior has the vibe of a bar in someone's garage, but when it's packed (which it is whenever I'm there), it's a pretty cool scene.
MonkeesFan 01-29-2013, 05:21 AM I am going to try it on Friday and try the classic grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup or big ass grilled cheese with bacon, I hope it is good as everybody says!

Take a friend and each order a different sandwich and then split them! Try them both and tell us what you think.

I could do that but if I do not find a friend then I am going to take my Dad with me
soonerguru 01-29-2013, 05:50 PM Cozy space. Slow, snooty bar service. Really didn't enjoy standing there like I was invisible trying to order a beer while Sergeant Hipster bartender has a leisurely chat with female bar patrons he was trying to impress, while being ignored by Ms. Snarly Face bar chick doing the register count and acting like I had leprosy. I'll just go back to comfy, friendly (and much busier) Saints.

Why do you say that?
kevinpate 01-29-2013, 07:50 PM sitting at a table and chatting with my Pops or my Mama is no longer an option. I miss those chats, some days way more than others.
On a brighter note, my youngest recently moved back to Norman. He took the day off and drove me a couple of counties over and back again one day last week when I had some out of town business. We had a great chat both ways that day. No mac and cheese, but we did share some oh so bad there good fried cheese sticks from a small town c-store.

Sorry to hear that but at least you are able to spend time with your son

haha, this is fantastic. Pretty much how I felt the first time I went. Give it one more try though, as things were better my second visit.

Maybe they need to contact that "undercover restaurant report" TV show . . . I've only seen it a time or two, but it is sort of fun to watch the misbehaving staff squirm when they are busted. Sort of a guilty pleasure . . . i apologize . . . =)
MonkeesFan 02-01-2013, 12:12 AM I am going to try the Mule today! I will let you know it is
Tried The Mule for the first time last night. I don't know how many people have been here, but I loved it. The previous review a few posts earlier couldn't be further from the experience I had. I highly suggest giving it a try, if you haven't.
Midtowner 04-04-2013, 12:34 PM I don't get the folks who bitch about the service. Some folks do have a very unreasonable expectation as to what service in such a typically very busy place ought to look like.
BBatesokc 04-04-2013, 09:03 PM I've been going about once a week or so now for awhile (group of 3-7) and have had a really good experience each time.
Praedura 06-29-2013, 12:51 AM They should use this in an ad:

Guaranted to pull in women, children, cat lovers, cheese lovers, etc....
:)
Larry OKC 07-02-2013, 05:06 PM Not going to go back and re-read the thread, but can someone explain the name of the place and the menu items (esp grilled cheese)...just not making a connection
catch22 07-02-2013, 05:19 PM I don't know the inspiration behind the name...but I do know they have great grilled cheese.
I usually get the Big Ass Grilled Cheese and an F5 or two.

The Mule is now open on Sundays for brunch, 10:30AM to 2:30PM:

shawnw 07-15-2014, 03:41 PM why did that take so long?
I suspect they wanted to keep their costs down until they got rolling.
I'm sure that sign was expensive.

Hughe meade does and oustanding Job. he also fabricates many things for the Myrian Gardens such as the props for the secret Garden childrens exhibit recently and the huge owl for the harvest celebration last year. he is an amazing artist.
betts 07-15-2014, 05:24 PM Can't wait for the OKSea variant of the Mule. I don't like to drive to dinner and the Mule is too far to walk.

It's a different concept than the Mule called Anchor Down. Corn dogs, alcohol, and actual dogs (are welcome).
Here's their latest tweet:
@AnchorDownOKC: house cased meats, hand dipped dogs. And ALL THE ALCOHOL IN THE WORLD! gonna serve this food LATE!!
Yep, we told you about this months ago and now it's official.
BTW, there will only be three tenants at OKSEA: Anchor Down, an art gallery and upstairs offices.
betts 09-23-2014, 01:06 PM Well, my kids will be happy when they visit, but I was hoping for the Mule's original menu, or a portion thereof. Oh, well, it will look great regardless.
RadicalModerate 09-23-2014, 01:58 PM Did The Mule move? I hope not. I wanted to enjoy an upscale Grilled Cheese sandwich at least once.
(not counting the one my sweet wife made, with authentic tomato soup about a year ago =)
I guess I'll have to settle for some Chicken Picatta on Angel Hair pasta. Dang. =)

No…the Mule is still at 16th/Blackwelder!
stratosphere 09-23-2014, 06:29 PM I don't get the folks who bitch about the service. Some folks do have a very unreasonable expectation as to what service in such a typically very busy place ought to look like.
I normally have a great time there as well but a couple weeks ago was quite the exception - horrible service from new hipster waiter - to include messing up our order, knocking some of our belongings off of the table, total indifference to us and also trying to rush us out of the door. Is there anything wrong with having a couple of beers with dinner on a friday evening? Yeah i realize the place gets crowded and other people want to come inside but there wasn't anyone waiting in line at this point to be seated. They were clearly trying to get us out of there, which is why they all but refused our drink requests once we had finished our meal, pre-tabbing out.
And seriously hipster wannabe waiter, you should button that flannel shirt so that when you are reaching across our table, the bottom of your shirt isnt dragging through our food!
Our previous wait staff have all been awesome and we tipped them very well, not this guy though.
RadicalModerate 09-23-2014, 09:11 PM As a dyed in the wool hobby cook, and aficionado of culinary delights, I must admit that there are few things more aggravating than a hipster wannabee waiter. Especially one putting a grilled cheese sandwich on the table without properly engaging the diner.

Sounds like a new server. I remember my first day on the floor by myself, when I used to wait tables a few years back. I was so nervous. I forgot to put in multiple drink orders throughout the night, I dropped a tray of waters on 4 guests at a table, and something else tragic happened that I can't quite remember. (Probably a good reason).
Waiting tables is hard, especially if you are new to it. And especially on a Friday or Saturday night. Cut the guy some slack, if it's a recurring problem with him he won't last long. Restaurants will never turn down liquor or beer sales on purpose, as it is usually the most profitable thing on the menu with extremely high margins. They want you to sit and order as many drinks as you can responsibly handle. I guarantee he didn't "forget" the drinks to push you out the door. As most restaurants use alcohol sales as one measure of determining a server's productivity. Drink sales are usually tracked, and most restaurants have weekly or monthly contests on who can sell the most alcohol as a percentage of sales. I'm sure the mule uses a similar tactic as it is pretty common in the restaurant industry, so I can guarantee that he didn't forget on purpose, and the restaurant didn't order him to cut you off to move more customers through.
stratosphere 09-25-2014, 05:45 PM I've been around the block a few times and can usually tell if the wait staff is new or whatever, in this guys case i didn't just get the vibe that he was new, there was certainly something else going on as well. If he were at least somewhat genuine or acted like he cared about giving us decent service it would be easy to overlook everything and give him a nice tip. This guy was just a dong, to put it nicely. The food there is great and the service is usually great as well, so eventually i will go back. Hopefully by then this guy will have found a profession more suited to his talents.
They are now open in Edmond. The menu appears to be a carbon copy of their other location.

chuck5815 12-05-2019, 04:55 PM That's a pretty sharp looking space. Do you know which firm did the design?
Irishman23 12-06-2019, 11:07 AM Looks to me to be about half as wide as the previous restaurants that were in this space.
Looks to me to be about half as wide as the previous restaurants that were in this space.
It's the same exact space as the last tenant, The Zu. Not sure about those that came before.
The Zu had a bar that was more centered and u-shaped. The Mule put theirs against the north wall and there seem to be more dining tables than before.
It's a nice space. Stopped in there yesterday.
jerrywall 12-06-2019, 11:36 AM Wow. Removing that center bar makes the space, at least in the pictures appear a lot narrower and deeper than I remembered. Looks good though. And it does seem like there are more tables.
Rover 12-06-2019, 01:23 PM It sure helped to lighten it up. Was depressing before.
Edmond Hausfrau 12-06-2019, 04:51 PM Looks so much better. When Frenzy opens across the street, this will be the best part of Edmond.
Edmond Hausfrau 01-16-2020, 09:30 PM Ate at the Edmond location tonight. They are doing a brisk business, especially in foul weather. Menu is exactly the same as the Plaza location. Soup du jour was excellent. I really hope they stick at this Edmond location.
Celebrator 01-16-2020, 10:28 PM We ate there last weekend and all of us had a good meal and good service. It was so fun to be sitting in that space in downtown Edmond. I hope there is a lot more development to come!
The Mule is moving within The Plaza.
They will be taking the former Maples spot. They told me it's bigger, has a bigger kitchen and a larger, more shaded patio.
Not sure what will happen to the space they are vacating, but they hope to open in their new spot in time for their 10th anniversary in September. In the meantime, they'll continue to operate at the current spot.

shawnw 06-30-2022, 10:36 PM definitely a better patio situation. what's the difference in inside sf I wonder.
Roger S 07-01-2022, 07:44 AM Drove through there a few days ago and couldn't believe that Maple's location was still available.
But I sure wish that Peruvian restaurant that was there had made it.... I miss that food.
catch22 07-01-2022, 08:18 AM Not a fan of these places moving within the district. It’s hard to recapture that spark. The new Empire never felt the same, and I imagine the new Mule won’t feel the same either. You can’t move the memories within the walls to a new space. Memories don’t make money I guess. Maybe I’m just turning into an old man.
Drove through there a few days ago and couldn't believe that Maple's location was still available.
Maples was obligated to keep paying rent which was why there was little motivation to find a new tenant.
